huge thanks to the two of you for the great feature! 🙏🏼 drumbeam pre-orders are starting at a reduced price on november 5, so make sure to follow us to stay tuned! you can find a direct link to our kickstarter campaign in the info box of this video!
Thanks for making this possible! You created something truly special here. I can't imagine the hours spent to achieve this kind of precision. We were truly flabbergasted, to put it like this. :-)
Thank you very much! I agree, this certainly is very useful, and it looks super cool in a drum setup. As I said in the video, using a fog machine besides this really adds that special sci-fi flair to your live performance.
Why? If I can ask... I've plenty of different kinds of MIDI trigger pads, including a full-size MIDI drum kit, and am honestly curious - what is the appeal here? It's a MIDI trigger strip, ok, not sure if I like how short/thin it is, but ok. However, beyond that it's >just< a MIDI trigger strip. We've had those for quite a while now... Or am I missing something?
@@looneyburgmusic I thought my video made the differences to a normal drumkit pretty clear ... Can you please name a few devices that have the features shown in this video?
@mr_floydst Don't recall comparing this to any drumkit, said it's basically a MIDI controller in strip form instead of using individual pads. Ok. I can understand that some might see the appeal in that, however, this sort of reminds me of the Roli line of MIDI controllers, which I've always thought were solutions in search of a problem. Personally, I'll stick with my AKAI MPD218's, I prefer having the individual programmable pads, versus a single thin strip, but that's just me.
This is very cool. As I've transitioned from playing acoustic drums and percussion to electronic kits, I've discovered that outside of midi keyboards, there is a total lack of straight forward multi pad triggers. I want the form factor of a Roland SPD SX with out all the internal stuff. This Drumbeam is on the right path for sure!
I don't have any experiences in that particular field, but there are some options here by Alesis, Yamaha, Roland, Nord and Korg. But as you said, they all come with they own sound engines. The drumbeam has the flexible layout the other ones don't have, and it looks way more sleek, though. ;-)
Cool device. I played drums when I was a teenager, this device could quite interesting in combination with a groovebox or drummachine to play drum rolls or tom fills by hand. It’s quite compact too.
I really want one of these, or like two or three of them! I think it might be a bit difficult to take past that five pad split, but practice makes perfect. This thing is so cool.
I think 6 or 7 is quite managable - since making this video, a lot of firmware updates have been released which improved on touch sensitivity and user experience.
@@mr_floydst Yeah I totally get it, I would imagine seeing it and playing it gives it a better perspective and feel. I play drums on pads and manage to hit the wrong pads fairly often, more than I would like, also using small pads, not large or standard. Really interested in this though, the velocity and more authentic drumming really was something. Also the device takes little space, which is a big win. Thank you for the reply XD.
Looks like a great product. Thanks for bringing it to our attention. Big part of a product like that is the company behind it and the support both in hardware and firmwares. I got Boppad but firmware needs improvements. And who still remembers The Sensel Morph?
thank you! we want to foster exchange with the community (already broad collecting feedback before its release) to make the changes the users of drumbeam need and want via firmware updates 🙂
How do you always have the weirdest gear? 😆 I can't say I mind. Not many people are making the same videos that you do. This video definitely shows how much you've grown since the Raspberry Pi days. I'm glad to see it.
Thanks! I always wanted to do a video which is a bit more like "story telling", and here it is. It also helps a lot Xavier is quite a bit more eloquent than me. ;-) And yeaaah, this is the weird gear channel, but this here really has the potential to become very popular among drummers. I will look super cool in live performances, on stage.
@mr_floydst I agree. The title says it all. Extremely versatile when compared to something like Roland SPD SX. Which is really the only option without getting a drum kit. Although there's a new one, I like the keyboard style format more. Hopefully, you will be the first one pointing this out. Thank you for the great response!
great idea guys, I love how easily this would fit around my acoustic drums vs using my Roland 8 pad controller that takes up way more room around my acoustic drums in a Hybrid situation. I'll take 6 of em lol
that's a very important point! thanks for your support! stay tuned for our kickstarter campaign starting november 5 - you'll find a link in this video's info box 🙂

Hi. This is a neat way to streamline an electronic drum kit. However you should consider having additional inputs so users can use all limbs. There's also more potential to manipulate the audio etc if an infrared beam was placed on the ends of the device.. . I think the main disadvantage to it's longevity is that its reliant on the web app to function. Unless the hardware defaults to 4 zones.
Hi, thanks for your feedback, I hope afk reads this. I think you're right, there should be a port for foot switches on it, but I also think the web app is a great idea, it will work with whatever will exist in the future. You can save your own presets and defaults for a quick startup.
In the "various drum demos" section (@05:55), what is the sound source? Was it the Yamaha MODX6, or were the sounds coming from the Drumbeam? (or was it a different sounds source all together?)
really cool, I'm curious about $. is there a way to add a HI hat and kick drum triggers for trigger foot pedals? This would be an amazing addon and replacement to an say a Roland SPD drum unit/head which has those I/O.
Hi, it seems the indiegogo campaign will start at 349 credits. There are no connectors for pedals, but it has MIDI in and USB connectors, so there should be a way to get those pedals from third parties. Otherwise, drop them a mail (info@afk-audio.de) ;-)
Main initial concern with this controller is the small surface area. Also, you'd expect a MIDI controller which is USB C only to be bus powered instead of requiring an additional power supply, considering. Also is it even possible to see the zone division when you have the pad mounted with the rubber facing you?
Hi, thanks for watching! This does not need an additional power supply. We used that because we had no cable to connect it to that MODX. This device has LEDs on both sides, so you should be able to see what you're doing. For us, the surface area didn't feel weird (especially when using drum sticks). A person that can play drums will adapt to this quite quickly, I think, but if you have doubts, try it first, perhaps. ;-)
It will be available on November 5th and price will be announced, but as other viewers reported, they had an indiegogo campaign starting at 349€, so it will be slighly more than that, I guess.
Looks pretty cool, hopefully they have really good solder connections. Would hate to have your usb connection break. Wifi or Bluetooth and battery powered would be cool. Hook to your phone on the go
@@danbunge9787 good question! The studio is the work of a lifetime of a certain Ron Lieberton. He built it, he equipped it, he had all the right connections to keep customers coming to this place. I guess the very short tour is a moment of respect to this man who seemed to be a very nice guy. :-)
Floyd I think you would really dig wildwood Lightning he was at knobcon and i picked it up, hes super nice and it has some really neat kinda.... uhhh nipple buttons? lol its really interesting i think its right up your alley
Thanks for watching! If you don't see an advantage in having a light show, definable zones (which gives you the exact number of pads needed), that CC feature and the recently added "slide" sensing, then this is not for you, I guess. ;-)
The attach point seems like an obvious point of failure... Cool concept, but I wonder if people would be willing to spend money on a niche product when it's bound to break.
Thanks for watching! Please look closely: it's the drum stand that 's swiveling, not the instrument itself, which is made from one CNC' d metal block. You'd have to excert and excessive amount of force to snap the hinge.
That was a ton of fun, and what a cool piece of kit to play as well!

It could really use a foot pedal or two for a kick drum but that is manageable with or without an official component.
Nice to see a modern take on all of those drum trigger bars from the 80s like the Yamaha BP80 and Pintech Nimrod.
