    Seems like you know what you're doing so I got a question. I have a 2001 foreman 450es and it backfires and sometimes doesn't want to hold an idle.. was told I might need to adjust the valves. Would that be the cause of the backfiring and what not? I'm new to this kind of stuff and would appreciate any help!
    Thanks

    • @mandosolly
      @mandosolly 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I think the best place to start is cleaning the carburetor, a little bit of dirt in the carb can cause trouble like that.

    • @capermud357
      @capermud357 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Solly Burton thanks man, I took the carb off and took the bottom off didn't look too bad but I didn't take jets out or nothing so I'm gonna have to do a complete cleaning of it this time

    • @mandosolly
      @mandosolly 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah make sure the jets are all clear.

    • @mandosolly
      @mandosolly 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also if it doesn't want to idle, there's the idle adjustment screw and the mixture screw, it might be set too lean. Try backing the mixture screw out a little to richen the mixture up at idle.

    Seems like you know what your doing so let me ask you something. My foreman (with 6500 miles) has never had the valves adjusted (sounds like a sewing machine) and lately it doesnt want to start right up. Now its gotten to the point where it doesnt start at all. Ive checked literally everything but the last thing for me to do is adjust the valves. Could the valves be a reason why it doesnt want to start? Thanks!

    • @mandosolly
      @mandosolly 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It will still start with valves that are too loose. But to get rid of all of that noise adjust them. The noise you are hearing could be a worn out timing chain that finally broke too. Check for spark first. If you have good spark fuel is the next thing to check. Give it a shot of starting fluid down the intake to see if it fires for a second. If not maybe it is out of time, possibly a sheared woodruff key on the flywheel. Was is smoking real bad before it quit running? Maybe it's got really low compression.

    • @CamOnTheGrind
      @CamOnTheGrind 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mandosolly actually if your valves are that bad out of adjustment sometimes they won’t run unless like u said off starting fluid I had a 350 rancher I had to adjust every month because it like to come right back loose to the point where it wouldn’t start at all only back fire

      There’s a hole on the passenger side of the motor that’s right next to the pull start and you take a key and open it up and pull the string until you see a little T line up with the tab on the threads of the hole and then you’re top dead center

    • @winstonpoplin
      @winstonpoplin 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Do the valve adjustment yourself. The ONLY way to know something is done right is to do it yourself. Valve adjustment is one of the most basic procedures you can do to an atv. If you plan to own an atv you need to learn to adjust the valves. In order for valves to be quiet they must be set perfectly. Even a few thousandths to wide and they will make noise.

    What makes valves end up unadjusted over time?

    • @buildurtruckurway9118
      @buildurtruckurway9118 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      usually they get loose from wear on the lash adjustment screws or they weren't properly torqued and they slowly back out of the lock nut but still stay tight somehow.
