FILIPINO UTANG - Getting a Loan In Small Town Philippines (Davao Province, Mindanao)

  • GETTING A LOAN IN THE PHILIPPINES? Here there is something called "Utang" and on this day in Cateel, Davao Oriental... that is exactly what I needed to do.
Another raw day along the coast of Mindanao. We head into town to pick up supplies for our fence and lot. But, I didn't bring enough money! Yikes! Luckily, here in the Province it is common to do something called "Utang", or basically loaning. Utang is something you can see happening everyday here. It is basically getting whatever you need from a store, and then having to pay back in the future.
In this video, we also explore the new snack shop that just opened up in our Barangay!
and get a sneaky TAHOOOOO!!! :)
    Power On!

Was actually very lucky that "Utang" exists here. There is only one ATM in Cateel, and it was broken this morning. Utang provided on this day! :)

You know, there was one thing that stood out in my mind about staying in the mountain province that the natural environment caused a positive change in my daily routine. The 12 hrs of light and 12 hours of night. At first, to my surprise most people went to bed around 7:30 PM and most of the lights were out around 8:30 PM. So evidently I learned to go to bed when the locals did even though it seemed much too early for me. But you know what... Every morning I woke up feeling refreshed like I have never felt before at around 4:30-5:00 AM. And then shortly after waking up I could hear the Pandalesal guy down in the valley touting his horn, making he way up the mountain on his motor, delivering that tasty Pandalesal. About a half hour later he would stop right outside our door with fresh, warm Pandalesal... Yum! Two boys next door that became my little buddies soon learned that I liked to share my Pandalesal early in the morning before the sun came up and we would have what the Hobbits refer to first breakfast. Then around 7:00-7:30 AM was second breakfast which included more bread, rice, and coffee. What good memories those times where. :)

Never been there and had no idea that it's nice there. Utang in small stores in the Philippines is just based on trust - a word of promise or word of honor to pay the loan. There are no legal documents to bind and record the loan. The store owners will just make notes for them to remember. It's a good system in a small community- kind of sharing and part of the culture. If you break your word of honor, trust and relationship will be hurt as well.

Kulas don’t worry about having “utang” ...Everyone did it or have one..My family during our younger years we live throughout utang, bcuz my Mama was a single mother of 3 & we got good neighbors who lend my Mama money she paid them at the end of the month..You even paid your “utang” at the end of the day...Good for you!!!

Utang is part of Filipino life to get by and keep going and survive. Some have long lists and at the end of the week or month just pay it and you start again a new utang. I become popular in our village as each time they knock on my door for payment I'm always away.

Yes, 'utang' is common in the Philippines and part of the culture. It is bad, when people are not responsible enough to pay their "utang,' and when it becomes a habit. You"ll get by because sometimes it is unavoidable but be responsible and honest. Another thing I like about your vlog is the trivia or facts you share about the place where you are. A look into the history of the place. Cool! Be responsible and settle your 'utang' and do not make it into a habit. Thank you and Power On!

Yes, UTANG helped me through college and at the same time paying off the monthly utilities. With 2 or more children going to school in the family, it is inevitable. Probably 80 to 90% of Pinoys have been going through this until now. Kudos to my parents who are "madiskarte". They always find someone who can help us. We survived because of that. I am surprised, you shared this to us coz it is something we would like to keep to ourselves (trying to survive at the same time "saving our face" from others). Thank you for this segment. It reminded me that without generous friends and relatives, we will not have survived growing up.

Kulas in the provinces UTANG is okay, pa lista then pay later, that's good. There is also UTANG kalimot or UTANG never paid, listed in air gone with the wind, that's BAD CREDIT. Kulas looked a bit embarrassed to eat the food of UTANG. LOL..No Joke of the day today from Johndy? I see it's Johndy's game of the day. my brothers and I used to play that while we sit high up on the aratiles tree..LOL..

Brilliant! Common in the Philippines for everyday folk but I've never seen non-natives asking for utang... had me chuckling all day. You're becoming more filipino than me everyday.

Good morning everyone... wow! Kyle u broke a record today from zero utang to earning 2 promissory notes in just one day 😁😁😁. U just adapted a pretty common pinoy trait called "utang"... but don't think it's a bad deal. Here in USA having to barrow money from a bank to buy many things u desire is pretty common too. So you'll alright 👍👍👍...

Hi Kulas. I am a British man expat living near Valencia Bukidnon. The problem with Utang is that when you lend money to local people it is hard for them to pay you back. I have learnt to only lend small amounts of money to people here. As a expat we are rich compared to the local people. The salary here is very low.
