What is the background music?
Souls of Fire, from Dark Souls OST
Imagime if Fromsoftware was given the rights to adapt berserk into a game. That would be the perfect adaptation of the story. I'd buy 10 copies
Yah, same! :)
@@dondonrv better yet imagine a prequel so they have more creative room based on the rise and fall of king gaiseric, imagine they pulled a KOTOR and the whole time you're playing as void before he got tortured lol.
Very interesting, thanks!
That would be absolutely mind blowing!
The music
As a Tarnished myself I can confirm that Caelid is in fact a nightmarish realm full of darkness and malevolent thoughts
Yeah! Especially after seeing those giant dogs and crows and shrimp enemies!
You can catch me chilling in the castle 24/7 funny enough it’s my favorite spot other then the queen bed chamber
I kinda liked it...
Wouldnt Caelid be more similar to Hell instead of that cave?
@@dondonrvKindred of Rot. For a second I thought I missed something.
While not for the faint of heart, Berserk definitely deserves all the recognition that it receives. A gripping story that explores both the best and worst features of Man.
Well said! It's my favorite in the Dark Fantasy genre.
Mostly the worst 😅
I should try reading it again. It was such traumap*rn though, bot sure its a good idea😅
-🤓
I would miss Chichi the flower fairy which helps Guts 😢
Also, Nepheli follows the guidance of a Hawk in the game, and uses Hawk axes.
Agree! The Stormhawk King ashes must be given to her, another reference to the Band of the Hawk.
@@dondonrvconversely if you give her Seluvis' potion Nepheli enters a state where she is still alive but her mind no longer functions properly similar to Caska after the eclipse. Grim but a similarity.
Can she be save I like her ...😢I mistakenly made her a puppet
Caelid is very similar to Eclipse, the landscape, palette of colors, blody river, weird creatures and an castle that could be a refference of Griffith's dream.
Yes, Caelid reminds me of the Eclipse as well! Thanks for sharing! Cheers!
@@dondonrv Yes! 🤝
And another refference of Eclipse at Caelid is the Hill of Swords that Rickert did to honor his friends of the Band Of The Hawk who passed away.
Miyazaki also made the same tribute to Miura after his death, making the Hill of Swords in Caelid is pure love!
@@mariofariassmthat’s in the video
You have to assume when Kentora Muria died From Software focused being even more inspired by Berserk.
Elden Ring was basically a love letter to Kentaro Miura.
Agree! Thanks for sharing!
RIP Miura 😢
Elden Ring is the reason that force me to read Berserk Manga that manga was a master piece ❤
Rip
Miyazaki couldn't thank Kentaro Miura enough and him creating a lot of Berserk references into the Elden Ring is the only way for Miyazaki to say thank you to him.
I've found another reference, in the page 12 of chapter 332, Rickert and Erika are saved by the new Band of the Hawk, in that moment Rickert recognizes the flag's symbol, and calls it a "Winged sword insignia" Which is the exact name of the talisman ingame.
Amazing find! Thanks for sharing!
"don't get yourself killed" are the words Godo said to Guts when he left to his journey with the DragonsSlayer.
Master Hewg use the same words several times.
Lol.. true! And in Demon's Souls, it's even better... "You have a heart of gold. Don't let them take it from you." The enemies in Souls Games will literally do it. :)
ANDRE from Darksouls 1 SAY THIS WHEN YOU LEAVE HIS FORGE
11:47 not only that but the prisoner class also start with a rapier. Gryffth iconic weapon.
Amazing observation! Thanks for the input!
Schierke is also present in Dark Souls as the Witch Beatrice. She is a summon that can help you in the abyss to fight the Four Kings. Her unused model is that of a child but in the full release she is an adult.
Thanks for the input! We will include her in our next video.
@@dondonrv Great video dude, keep up!
All of the Dark Souls games have some kinda witch
We have Beatrice in DS1, DS2 has Zullie, and DS3 has Zullie and Alva's daughter Karla
YOU FORGOT ONE!! Just outside of mount glemir is a dungeon called Wyndham catacombs, which is a dungeon accessed through a graveyard secret entrance. This is a direct reference to the dungeon griffith was kept in, and how Guts and his group infiltrated it through a cemetary secret entrance. Also important to mention that Wyndham is the Kingdom that they were in as well.
Nice catch! Thanks for sharing!
I see Gideon as the closest Griffith reference tbh. Melania has a fair amount of aesthetic similarities to Griffith, but by that logic we could even compare her guts with the cursed (scarlet rot/guts mark) and damaged (detachable prosthetic arm) body that is adept for fighting, but there's nothing we see of her personality.
By contrast Gideon works his way up as leader of the round table (band of the hawk) you join, and is obsessively focused on his dream of a kingdom (or info and all knowing status for elden lord power). Gideon is one of the only leaders who lacks any royal lineage, which is a central part of Griffiths background. Then there's the nephali/casca relationship, betrayal, attempt to reign in your ambition like in Gut's second duel, or when Gideon has Ensha attack you over the haligtree medal.
The erdtree burning has elements of the eclipse, in starts the destruction of the roundtable/band of the hawk, and Gideon sides with the demigods just as Griffith joins God hands. Those are my thought anyway, great video!
Thank you for the very detailed input and feedback! During my research, I learned also about the perspective that you are sharing regarding Griffith and Gideon. And I agree with you, there are a lot of similarities in context in terms of ambition and his means to rise to power. And adding the Nephali angle, which we claimed in the video as our Casca, the proposition becomes even stronger. Thanks for sharing! I will add your input in our next video.
plus the character model of Gideon is a man with pale skin and long white hair
I also think vyke could be a reference for griffith. He was almost elden lord( a king like griffith almost became) but was sucked into madness and burned(tortured) and locked inside an evergoal(jail) high ontop of a mountain and later takes the power of the madness much like griffith uses the power of the behelit. Vyke also became friends with the dragons and was one of their most prized allies which could be a reference to how griffith gains the loyalty of the apostles
Don't forget that both of the blacksmiths were tasked with "crafting a sword that would kill a" God for elden ring and dragon for berserk. Both of them were selected as the only person who could make something that impressive
Thanks for sharing! Impressive observation!
Also, possibly a coincidence, but there is a Greatsword against the wall right near the smith in Roundtable Hold. Seeing as the weapon has never looked more like Dragonslayer than it does in ER, it feels more like a meaningful placement rather than a randomly assigned model.
The last one is my favorite, it makes so much sense. It's also a great hint that Miquella true personality is that of a manipulative evil bastard or at least it's that once he emerges from his cocoon.
I can't wait for the DLC! :)
Miquella is the strongest demi god child in the game per lore. He was loved by every being in Leyndell. When we meet him he sleeps in an egg and is watched over by his kidnapper, a literall demon that uses blood magic. Miquella created a new Erdtree, a safe haven for the unwanted. His "watchdog" is a woman on a horse with a bow. To get to this haven one must find the key, which is guarded by the knights of the eclipse and Comander Niall. The comander drops his prothesis, which states that he lead an army of no nation.
Griffith is consindered the strongest of the God hands and is portrayed as a bird-like creature. He used the egg of the gods to gain power, which cries tears of blood and creates the eclipse. Griffith ascends by sleeping in an egg. He also created a safe place by destroying the land. A new kingdom of no nation. His "watchdog" is a demon general with a bow that looks similar to a centaur. Griffith was also loved by every person as a war hero.
Well played Miyasaki, well played.
Very astute observations! Thanks for sharing!
Not to mention the only image we have of Miquella is of him being 'dead' or whatever, and he looks quite a lot of like post-torture Griffith.
Can't wait for DLC ❤
Not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but Mogh kidnapping Miquella out of “love” could also be a reference to Gennon, the Tudor that was obsessed with Griffith.
Thanks for sharing! Yes, I believe it has been shared, and I would like to revisit this view someday for a future video :) Cheers!
The Magma blade is a possible reference to Isidro's dagger.
The magma blade is made from the lava of Mt. Gelmir and is dropped by man serpents, Isdro's blade was also forged in lava and it's called Salamander Dagger
Thanks for the input! I will be revisiting this in a future video about the references :)
What people fail to notice about Greatsword in Elden Ring is that it doesn't really resemble Guts' Dragonslayer. It resembles his Golden Age greatsword much much more. Only thing is that it is much bigger so is more the size of Dragonslayer
I'm close to being done with Berserk and it's awesome to see how many of these I thought to myself "oh, reference!" especially considering how old the manga is. Great video series!
Thanks for the feedback! Glad you are enjoying Berserk! :)
Kentaro Miura was amazingly creative. The stuff rolling around his head must've been wild.
The menu theme of ds1 hits hard
Fun Fact: Early Berserk is *highly* influenced by Fist of The North Star.
Both are violent stories about dark haired warriors who are scared and betrayed by their best friend but become much stronger as a result.
They then wander through a dark world killing villains and form a new bond with people they meet along the way.
In fact I think that Berserk will end similar to how Fist of the North Star did. The Godhand will be destroyed but things won't be perfect and the world will be irrevocably changed.
Life will just go on in a kind of bitter sweet ending
Thanks for sharing!
Berserk was influenced by Hokuto no Ken and Devilman. Guts design is based on Kenshiro, and Griffith androgyn design is based on Ryo/Satan.
Griffith felt jealousy from Guts and Casca relationship. Just like in Devilman where Ryo felt jealousy from Akira and Miki relationship.
I would say that while yes the greatsword is an homage to Berserk, it is much more reminiscent of Guts' sword from the Golden Age arc rather than the dragonslayer
The Grave of Swords they made for Miura made me cry. I idle there often.
his description at 7:10 together with the panel made me laugh
Glad you like it! That creature's name is Schnoz, from the Berserk community.
Same dude, laughed my ass off
Thank you for such a well done side by side comparison. I was still finishing my first read of Berserk when I played through Elden Ring so I got a heavy dose of dark fantasy goodness.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the feedback!
There’s also a castle in the snow area where you get the half of the dectus medallion where it’s a complete reference to the eclipse, symbolism and all, and it’s even believed Miquella is part of it
Thanks for the input! I will review all comments for a future video.
I love the amount of work you've put into this video especially when you quote each volume along with its chapter
Genuinely brilliant!
I also see a likeness to Casca in Rennala, both being great leaders who made their own fortune left broken with their disfigured children. And with a witch watching over them in times of need in Ranni and Schierke.
Thank you for a nice video
Thanks for sharing! Yes, and Farnese as well.
I absolutely love how you present your content. Really fresh.
Thanks! :)
i dont know if anyone else has see it before but in the Altus Plateau there is a ruins with the name of Wyndham, and that is the name of the main kingdom in Golden age
Thanks for sharing!
For me, the dragonkin soldier are more a Grunbeld reference than Rykard, my friend (that got me into berserk) and I immediately thought the same when we first found it. Even lorewise is kinda similar, not only the looks.
Thanks for the input! I completely forgot about the Dragonkin Soldier! He looks like Grunbeld even in his human form.
What about that dragon that has glintstone growing from its head? That looks more like Grunbelds dragon form
awesome video seems like it took lots of effort to make as well, really deserves more views and likes
Thanks for the feedback! I had to re-read the whole of Berserk manga, just for Elden Ring video alone. But it's all worth it! :)
My favorite one is right at the begging one of the game, one of the starters races the player can pick wears a prisioner mask, his description states he is was a noble from other land and his face is beautiful along his hair, a blonde whitered
Thanks for sharing!
This is an outstanding presentation you’ve put together for these great works of art and story telling. Thank you. Subbed. 👍🏽
Thanks for the kind words! :)
Love the channel nice to see the linking of the chapters sources in the references and noting how multiple bit and piece can be found here and there.
Idea for later videos maybe list Berserk characters like Void who aren't yet used as a basis in any of the games.
Glad you enjoy it! Regarding Void and other characters, yes I can include them in future videos. Cheers!
im gonna drop a sub ,you are underrated asf man
Thanks for the feedback!
The Glintstone Sorcerers have an attack that bears striking resemblance to a scene from Berserk where Father Mozgus caves a villager's head in with a book of scriptures. The sorcerers can also attack the player by striking them in the head with a book.
Your content is top tier!! Exceptional quality. Thank you.
Much appreciated!
Great video ! minor correction at 13:00 The Berserker Armour made by dwarves doesn't give any strength nor it heals, it simply subdues the pain allowing the wearer to pass pain limits set by the body and if needed pierces into the host's body reinforcing broken bones or muscles allowing the wearer to keep on fighting . Emperor Gaeseric/ Skull Knight was the first to wear the armour . It's side effects are 1 . It ages the wearer, weakens them, and as in Guts' case takes away his sense of taste . 2. It actually feeds on rage and fear, harnessing it to completely take over the host .
Thanks for sharing! You are correct, the damage is still there, it just numbs the pain.
Gut hasnt shown it true potential
First off, great content, can't get enough of Berserk and being so prominent in the Souls Series is a boon (atleast for me)! That said some of the stuff I thought about:
There's the part with Ranni's "astral face" which bears a similarity to when Schierke summoned the Lady of the Depths at enoch village (chapter 213), there's one picture in where the Astral being's overlapping one side of Schierkes face.
Then there's also the greater will who, through the two fingers who selected empyreans, 5 of them which _could_ be a nod to the godhand who got selected by the "god" from Berserk.
Also the Nameless city far below the ground, which might refer to Lovecrafts Story, but it also lines up with Leyndell on the overworld, so it might also be a reference to Gaiseric's capital, which lies beneath Wyndham capital (now Falconia).
Thanks for the input! It shows you are extremely familiar with Berserk. I have seen the image you are referring to as well and I completely agree with your view. I might include it in our future videos. Cheers!
Some people say that a Berserk game made by FromSoftware would be too slow, that the combat in the manga is fast paced and frenetic, by judging the gameplay from Demon's Souls, Dark Souls and Elden Ring, but if you just watch the combat of Sekiro... you know they can make it.
I believe that Hidetaka Miyazaki must have presented the idea one to many times to FromSoftware, the rights must be pretty expensive and Berserk isn't a mainstream thing, so they would invest too much and fear it wouldn't sell too well, but that is just speculation from me...
Please FromSoftware, let the man do his work, make a Berserk game!
I believe as well that Sekiro is a perfect template for a future FromSoftware game that is driven by a story :) (I uploaded a video yesterday about Miyazaki's view on a Berserk game! Check it out!)
Another connection with Caelid is that the realm of Quilphoth is birthed from the efforts of a goddess, a particularly violent one.
That's a good one! I hope those who read your comment can guess who they are. Thanks!
Great research. Happy I landed here. Good job 👏
Thanks for the feedback!
I am almost 100% certain that the blasphemous blade is a direct respect to TEAM17's "Blasphemous" and the main characters weapon of choice "Mia Culpa".
The little snake coils being represent of the barbs on steel.
Hey this is really great! Thanks for putting this together
Glad you liked it! Cheers!
Unfortunately, I haven't read much of Berserk, I'm currently going back and reading it. But I've always been interested in having a deep dive video into the comparisons and inspirations Miyazaki used in his games. Had to sub!
Thank you!
Can I show you the way? TheAlmightyLoli has a 21 Hour Video explaining the whole entire manga. In his newer vids, he goes into depth with the Post-Miura Chapters. You wont regret it
@skylarsis3692 I'd have to recommend reading the Manga through while listening to Hai Yo on repeat. 😂
Dude Berserk is SO good...I had to have the bound volumes....so reading it made me purchase all 13 releases so far. When I could have paid either nothing to read online or much less to read the small Mangas. I've been through the entire thing at least 3x since I got the latest volume a few months ago.
I read it once a year at a minimum!
I'm glad i'm not the only one with these constant thoughts like this
Lol yeah!
Awesome video, the best I've seen on this subject.
Thanks for the kind words!
Tons and tons of references and I’d never deny that berserk is the ultimate inspiration for fromsoft games but it is also important to remember that a lot of the world building and pre game story was written by George RR Martin and therefore not likely to have anything to do with Berserk. Doesn’t apply to most of the references but there are a few.
Agreed! Miyazaki is a big fan of GRRM, even before Elden Ring (it's the reason actually why he requested GRMM to do the mythology of the game).. Thanks for sharing! :)
“Total nightmare fuel”
Shows a picture of Schnoz.
Haha...you noticed it! :)
This Video is a gem, you deserve much more subs man
Thanks for the kind feedback! Much appreciated! :)
Amazing. Loved it. Thank you so much for your video
Thank you for the kind words and feedback! It means a lot to me.
@@dondonrv Keep it up brother, you are doing an amazing job❤
You are a great storyteller, A+ great content
Thanks for the kind words!
So is no one going to mention the similarities between Mohg and Governor Gennon and there relationship with Miquella/Griffith?
Impressive observation! I almost forgot about that character in Berserk... very interesting.
these videos are beautiful. Just what I was looking for 😍😍
Thank you! :)
@@dondonrv Keep it up! DS and Berserk are literally my top 2 favourite media so I'm glad someone is making videos about both of them
alright. you got me there in the Gostoc - Griffith joke. fucking hell. subscribed!
from the second i saw grunbeld he reminded me of radahn. doesn't help that his gair is red too. there's a specific panel of him sitting on his horse that looks most like radahn. i do believe he was also the inspiration for rykard though
Guts' armor in The Black Swordsman arc also is referenced by the Night's Cavalry Set
Thanks for the input!
11:20 I think the sword in the game is more similar to the sword Guts uses during the golden age than the Dragon Slayer
Thanks for sharing!
Good Job on this video! you explain things very well
I appreciate that! Thanks!
The thing I love about your video is that you point out the references and tributes to Berserk artistically, rather than just calling it copying and stealing, great video!
Thanks for the feedback! I explained in the Miyazaki bio video that he was doing it to give homage to the books he loved during his childhood and has nothing to do with plagiarism or lack of inspiration. Nothing changes on the Souls games, even if the references were removed. Cheers!
I think Miquella is gonna have really tall, lanky moth-like features that also give off falcon vibes. I could seem them mixing Rosine's demon form and Femto's design based on the silky cocoon he's sleeping in
the soulsborne games are a giant berserk reference
True!
I kind of think that vyke was a reference to griffith, much with how he almost became elden lord but sucked into madness after being burned(tortured) and locked inside a evergoal high atop a mountain all by himself. He also takes on the power of the madness which can also be a reference for how griffith took the power of the behelit
Thanks for sharing!
You voice is very calming and I like how you space your words out
Thanks for the feedback!
Np, underrated content creator for sure! Will be on the lookout for upcoming videos
man i remember watching berserk as a young teen and being like, oh shit i love the medieval type anime and then the ending happened and i got scarred lmfao
Lol yeah… and the manga is more intense :)
The Erdtree could also be a potential (semi)reference to the Trees of Valinor - specifically Laurelin, the golden tree - from Lord of the Ring's deeper lore. They're massive trees that similarly tower over a majestic elven city. I only say this as George R.R. Martin was co-writer to Elden Ring and is a known LoTR fan.
Thanks for sharing!
Very nicely put together
Thanks for the feedback! Cheers! :)
Great Work! Well Done.
Thanks for the feedback!
The iron mask the prisoner wears is definitely a reference to Griffith's but Bogart's iron mask looks more like the movie one.
I love all the references and it definitely makes me want to replay elfin ring. And watching this also reminded me of dragons dogma. And I remember a lot of references in that game also. Definitely another replay for both games!!
Yeah! I can't wait for the DLC...
I love your videos dude keep it up
Appreciate it!
This was a an amazing video thank you, Berserk is my favorite story ever told
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks! :)
Blackguard boggerts mask looks sililar to the 1 from the movie the prisoner mask certainly looks similar to Griffiths
Godoh will always be one of my favorite side characters in Berserk, passed on some of the greatest wisdom onto Guts before his passing (that he unfortunately would ignore)
Agreed! :)
"our conclusion is that no one fits Griffith as an Elden Ring character more than Gostoc"
i was caught off guard with that one
amazing video mate
Thanks a lot!
7:11 thanks for the breather image
XD
Glad you liked it! His name is Schnoz :)
Imagine a fromsoftware video game adaptation of berserk but we play as skull knight
10:41 That same art of war is also on the Wolf Knight's Greatsword in DS3
Yeah! Thanks for sharing! :)
You deserve way more views and subscribers!
Glad you liked it! :)
There was also a pretty clear refrence to berserk with the deathbed companion. I don't know which chapter but that one flat faced Priester from the conviction arc told the exact same story to Farnesse
Thanks for sharing!
nice work
You forgot Beatrice in DS1 is also a reference to Schierke
Yes! Forgot about her lol :) Thanks for the input. I will add her in our next video.
Thank you miura and miyazaki
Knowing that miquella is a parallel of representation of Griffith, who achieved god hood makes me insanely excited for the potential of a Griffith like boss fight in the elden ring DLC. Considering that they are so similar, if miquella were to achieve the god good described in his potential it would be easily one of if not the best fight in video games, as a clear representation of Griffith/Fenton as a boss would be amazing. Focusing on the fact that mohg used miquella as a sacrifice for his true outer god, it would be easy to see how that could have influenced miquella and miquellas final form, as it’s likely an arena similar to that where guts lost his arm is possible considering the thematic similarities. It’s likely we will have a femto like boss in the dlc, or atleast we can hope so
Thanks for sharing! Looking forward to the DLC! :)
It’s funny that I never noticed a lot of these references, but when it’s pointed it it seems so obvious. :D
Hope you liked the video!
I would have thought the bloodhound knights were more of a reference than Maliketh. Only because their beastial form is more ambiguous, they tend to look more like a feral human. Whereas Maliketh is or at least looks like a giant wolf.
No, no, you were on to something with Gostoc being Griffith 😂
Lol.. yeah! :)
7:11 idk if you still read the comments but you knew what you were doing with that script and footage 😂
Gwyndolin in DS1 and 3 is very much a reference to Griffith as well
Yeah! We have him in our latest video. Cheers!
@@dondonrv cheers, mate
In my heart of hearts, I'm still hoping one day that FS will make THE Berserk game that basically does for UGS what Sekiro did for the Katana. Just a tight and focused exploration of man and weapon.
Agreed! :)
Another thing that kinda nails Caelid being more of a reference to Berserk is the fact that you get the Greatsword (Gut's sword) from a carriage within Caelid.
Thanks for sharing!
Great video
I believe Hewg is based off Hanarr not Godot. Hanarr is a Dwarf and Hewg is smaller and of a different detested race like how the creatures of Elfhelm are likely hated by humans and obviously demons for the positive natures and live in a land where nobody can go without special circumstances like how we need Melina’s help to go to the roundtable hold in the middle of nowhere south west of the map like Elfhelm is except to the East in Berserk.
If you look whenever Wyald is killed by Zodd, when his guts are spewed, the exact same hands as Rykard's come out of him, long slender meat tentacles with a couple of prongs at the end.
Thanks for sharing! I checked and saw it. I also covered Wyald's death scene in the video next to this one.
@@dondonrv oh snap i did'nt even realize there was a sequel to this, my bad and keep up the good work!!
Thanks! :) Hope you like it!
So sad that we will never get to know how Berserk ends… Will Caska really get together with Guts again? Will Guts get his revenge on Griffith?
I believe the manga continues with new chapters and volumes :) Check it out!
@@dondonrv What!? For real!?
Lol yeah... Casca is back... :)
@@OnMyFingerTipsyeah Kentaros apprentices and life long friend are continuing the story
Great video, immediately subbed and liked.
What is the background music used in the video? Really ties the video together
Souls of Fire, from Dark Souls OST.
