    Thank you for the great information. My wife and I are planning to go back to retire in Puerto Rico and although I am puertorican I left when I was young over 20 years ago when I didn't have to worry about health insurance and all of that. I will continue to watch your videos so that I am prepared for retirement in the beautiful Isla del Encanto.

    For dental work, you can go to the dental school clinic at the University of Puerto Rico School of Dental Medicine. Almost all the students speak English. And they do appointments. And the program also has foreign trained dentists going through revalidación to be licensed in the US so there are very experienced dentists as well. The prices are good but it does take a while since the professors need the check off the steps of the procedures as they are done.

      Yes, that is a good idea my late husband did that and got quality care for a fraction of the cost. The downside is that you have to do several visits.

    I still keep my main medical practitioner in the state's every six months we return and have full dental and medical examination and return to Puerto Rico. We do keep a local doctor for emergency only. Our medical benefits do cover medical expenses if we are out of state.

    Regarding the ambulances, every municipality is supposed to have at least one ambulance, but the truth is many have them broken. Outside de metro area, medical services can be harder. Is very common to be in the waiting area of a doctor office in San Juan and find patients from Ponce or Guayanilla (a 2+ hours by car). For emergencies services, not always the paramedics will ask. They know, for example, a possible brain stroke should be send to the specific hospitals that has the proper technology and personnel.

    Dentist are cheaper compared to USA, for example, a zirconia crown - $700 approx. Many people travel from USA to PR for dental services. Doctors here have the same federal requirements than the USA. All doctors in PR are supposed to speak English but the nurses and staff is another story. About the laboratories, some have the option of allowing you to download your results so you don’t have to pick them up.

    My dearest Jen. Love all your videos. I was born in Arecibo Puerto Rico and am planning on retiring there with my other half. If I may ask... Have you ever heard of Carmen Jovet? She is a jem for health care in Puerto Rico. She may be able to help you and your friends maximize your medical plan and also address some of your concerns on the radio and just maybe they can help fix some of the issues that still exist with Puerto Rico's health care. Again thank you for the wonderful videos. If you need to know more please feel free to let me know.

My irs paper says no income. The 215 a month with seperate dental is hard to pay. What are my options .and I can't afford house or car coverage too. I did not know moving here I won't be working

    I live on rhe island. That situation with the ambulance doens't sound right. If there is an emergency, I think they have to get you to the hospital. They cant just leave you there if you dont pay. You should investigate that. Make a complaint. It is illegal to do it in hospitals.

      Lo mismo aqui en Georgia. Same here in Georgia. 20 minutes ride on an ambulance cost $800 + since we called 911 we got firemen and police. Police didn't charged but we got a bill of $1200 from the Fire Department. Then couple of hours on ER, JUST LIKE 2-4 HOURS cost $3000. I'll be more than happy to bring my own pillows and blankets in PR! It is waaayyy cheaper. I have been on an ER in PR and I needed to pay just the ER co-pay of $10 and that's it. My insurance cost was 160.00 a month.. That's a steal.

    Next issue I bought triple SS. Then had to buy another plan on top of it just to one item covered. First triple SS said you got full dental coverage but then crowns keep getting deneilied. Then you must buy another plan from someone else. . I was hoping have dental and health all in one plan. A pain it is two bills two cards just to cover major procedure. For the once in a while major dental need. Two different companies is annoying. Said full coverage but o that's not covered. Or would you cancel the delta dental and put the money into a savings account.

    Med. Co-payment for generics is $5.00 no matter the Co. So medicine is ok here. To see a doctor most offices open at 8am and you sign a list and then you wait. Also if you go to a CDT. centro de diagnostico y tratamiento... There you have doctor, labs, x-rays... All in one place.

    • @JenThereDoneThat
      @JenThereDoneThat  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are right, most co-pay for prescription medicine is $5 but there are exceptions. There are also Doctor's offices that do take appointments, you really have to ask around to find them. Great tip about the CDT - all in one place is not common.

Right now Auxilio medical plan is between $92 - $150 monthly (depends on your age) and if you have a son in college and both are members he pay only $65 until he finish grades. The plan have a limit age to get in as a member (I think is 64 years old).

      Unfortunately, there are few jobs, lower paying jobs, and the job market is really tough here. Skilled labor (like electrician, plumbers, heavy equipment operators) can easily get work, especially as self employed.
      This is why so many people wait until retirement to move here.

    I can’t stress this enough. If you want to move to Puerto Rico. You have to learn Spanish. A lot of gringos move to puerto Rico thinking they don’t have to assimilate. Because Puerto Rico is a us colony. Spanish is the language of Puerto Rico so learn. Everyone else has to learn English in the USA. So it wont kill you to learn Spanish gringos
