  • Lake Superior surfing during one the biggest storms of the year! After learning how to surf in Tasmania and traveling the world in search of waves I was blown away to discover that the Great Lakes have some amazing surfing. Fresh water surfing at its finest.

    Thar looks around what would equate to a 9 or 10 second swell period here in the Gulf of Mexico on the west coast of Florida, with that swell coming in from more miles away. Lines that long on the lake is what boggles my mind. I can understand the wave heights getting up there with the depth of the lake and how low the pressure gets in those storms. Some are hurricane force. What I don't understand is just how long the lines can clean up and spread out to with their short length of travel after the winds switched or let down. Simply amazed! Go glad yall are up there enjoying your local resource of fun.

    I absolutely LOVE this video. It's well done and I can totally relate to your journey. I grew up in northern WI and began surfing on the east coast at 26. Surfed for 15 years (East Coast, So Cal, Mexico, Peru, etc.) before moving back to WI where I raised my family. At 52 I just started surfing again a couple months ago on Michigan and Superior. I am amazed at the waves and so thankful that surfing is back in my life…for good.

      I don't know man. I grew up surfing in NJ too and it was pretty extreme. I remember surfing a day back in the 80s when it was negative 30 with windchill factor, 3 feet of snow on the beach, and ice chunks coming over in the lip (i.e., frozen water and snow got washed out from the jetties into the line-up). When I was done, my toes and fingers were so numb I almost went to the hospital because they weren't warming up... But eventually as they "came back to life," the pain and throbbing really set in. That was as extreme as anywhere on the planet I'd say. Everywhere, even NJ, has its extreme days I suppose. Keep on rippin 😎🤙

    • @anarchistangler
      @anarchistangler 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      These are just waves on a lake, right? the way that swell generates is because of strong winds blowing across the lake? Recently I bought into a resort on the edge of the Nam Ngum Reservoir in Laos, and I am wondering now if I will get the chance to try a bit of this freshwater surfing myself (without the snow). I never imagined such a thing possible. Anyway, great hobby and video. Pumped me up.

    • @jakedavid2523
      @jakedavid2523 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@anarchistangler yes made by wind. Lake superior is over 100 miles wide and super deep so swell has time to build and generate power. The reservoir your talking about is much smaller and very shallow but may have some really really small waves sometimes if you get any major storms. It also looks like there are a lot of islands though which may block the swells too.

    • @anarchistangler
      @anarchistangler 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah right. Thanks for checking it out and giving your opinion. There is a fair bit of swell on Nam Ngum when there is a storm I have to plough through in my fishing boat, and some of the places I fish the driftwood and wave erosion is very high up the bank. It gave me some hope perhaps there might be a wave. I am going to check it out when next there is a huge wind. I can't offer you any surf probably, but you're pretty decent for explaining your hobby to me and entertaining my questions. If you would like to come and catch some prehistoric fish some time - some really gnarly predators - contact the Green View Resort Laos. I am going anyway, and I got a rod you can borrow. It is one of the last wildernesses on earth.

After high school, I moved back to Oz and that started two decades of surfing around the world. I gave up surfing in 05 and moved home only to meet a guy that year who said he was going surfing up on Lake Superior. I had to pinch myself to make sure I wasn't dreaming. Then I had to change my shorts! I've seen and surfed Epic waves up on that lake. Epic! I surfed up there for over 12 years. Due to children I haven't been in the surf for a few years but that's going to change!

      Yeah man it's weird without the saltwater for sure. I tend to get a lot of sinus blockage after surfing freshwater. Taking a decongestant helps. Not as much buoyancy as well so your board feels a little sluggish. When duck diving you get held in a somewhat suspended area where you aren't rising back up to the surface. Almost a neutral buoyancy. Thanks for watching !!!

    As someone scared of sharks I think this seems like a great alternative to surfing the ocean. I’d never surf in the ocean but I’d defiantly surf there it looks so much fun and it must be so much funner knowing no sharks are lurking around you.

    Do you ride a bigger board or at least one with more volume to compensate for the fresh water or is it negligible?

    • @getwildwithevan
      @getwildwithevan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I usually ride the same boards I have for Hawaii and other areas but I should really have a small quiver of higher volume boards for the lake. My 8' walden is a wave catching machine because of the volume but it's doesn't rip like a short board.

    With all that shoreline I wonder why the state hasn't sculpted some really nice breaks or at another level invested in any of those Surf parks. All that fresh water ought to be worthy of some type of investment. Lake Superior and Michigan alone pick up the lions share of year round wave activity. Its definitely long board territory.

  • @gerryrockwell8758

    I would take a big cooler, put a large trash bag in it and fill it with hot water for afterwards. Fill it , twist the top of the bag shut and close the lid.
    You have to rinse out the wetsuit anyways and the instant heat was soooo nice!!!
    If you don't already do this...please do.
