Beyond The Wheel | Rajula Shah | 2005

Beyond the Wheel takes a look at the dialogue between three women in Indian Pottery, across the rural-urban, individual-traditional divides, with reference to the taboo of the wheel.
Across cultures, tradition bars women from engaging in activities of certain kind. In most cultures, the plough, the fishing net and the potter’s wheel have traditionally been a space restricted to the entry of ‘men only’. In many potter communities, women cannot beat the pots nor can they set fire to the kiln.
With Ceramist and Ethnographer, Shampa we travel to the remote villages of Thongjao and Khavda to meet her counterparts in traditional pottery. Of these Sara Ibrahim belongs to the western tradition of painted pottery from Kutchh, Gujarat and Neelmani Devi to the north eastern tradition of burnished pottery from Thongjao in Manipur. In keeping with the taboo, Sara & Neelmani do not touch the wheel, yet the taboo of the wheel is turned on its head as they find ways to circumvent it, in the process- 're-inventing' the wheel.

यह फिल्म देखना एक सुखद अहसास रहा। स्त्री शिल्पकारों के काम को, उनके जीवन को देखने समझने का मौका मिला। बिना चाक के इतना सुंदर काम। कितना चुनौतीभरा और कठिन है। मगर अपनी सृजनधर्मी ज़िद से वे हंसते हुए कितनी खूबसूरती से उसे अंजाम दे रही हैं। (चाक पर काम करने में शायद किसी वर्जना का अनुभव हुआ..!!??)
सारा जी और नीलमणि जी के काम के बारे में इस फिल्म के माध्यम से ही जान पाया। सारा जी के आसपास का वातावरण मिट्टी के संदर्भ में खासा चुनौतीभरा लगा। दोनों की ही लगन बहुत प्रेरित कर रही है। शंपा जी को देखना बहुत प्रीतिकर लगा। उन्होंने बहुत जिज्ञासा पूर्ण ढंग से दोनों से संवाद किया है। शंपा जी के काम को देखकर अतिशय आनंद हुआ। पुराने दिनों और अनुभवों को फिल्म कितनी पवित्रता से संजो कर रखती है। शंपा जी के स्केच, पॉट पर रंगना, बनाना फिर भट्टी से निकालते देखना रोमांचक लगा। उनके सृजन और समय में झांकने का मौका भी इसने दिया।
हमारे लिए तो सबसे ज्यादा मजेदार मोमेंट वो रहे जब तुकु भैया की एंट्री हुई। उनके बचपन को भी देखने का दुर्लभ सा अवसर यहां मिला। फिल्म के लिए राजुला जी को दिल से बधाई। आशा है और भी फिल्में देखने को मिलेंगी।
