You have the bottom piece on upside down. The notched end goes down into the fluid to avoid airlock.

Felt like an idiot putting this together trying to jam it into the white top.
Found out I was doing it correctly, just had to turn the straw upside down. Apparently it’s more narrow and soft on one end even though it looks like one solid plastic straw 🙃
