Saved from scrap yard 1965 Chrysler imperial

- I bought this car from some older couple that just wanted to send it to the junk yard so i said i can't let that happen lol. it was owned buy her father who bought it in 1968 and owned it up till he passed away with in the last year or so. The daughter and her husband didn't want nothing to do with it and just wanted it to go away basically so i took it off their hands.
It’s a shame when people scrap out a perfectly nice old car that’s original and runs great. I’m glad you saved it.
Great car! NO on the modern wheels, YES on a set of whitewall tires and original wheel covers.
nahh modern looking old school nostalgic looking wheels makes it look more aggressive. help with the looks of the curves of the car.

I agree. Whitewall tires make the car look ugly as hell. Put some newer nice wheels on there like the ones inside the car.
whitewalls are more period correct than any modern wheel. id rather see that.

A few years back I was working in the film business. One day the Transport Captain of a show told me he was into Demo Derby and was half way through stripping out a mint, pristine 67 Imperial Crown Southampton 2 door to run in an upcoming derby. He had paid 2 grand for this 35,000 mile car. I was disgusted
Thats sickening to me too Chrysler usually won in those Derbys they were stronger the metal was thicker or better I've always been a fan of Chrysler of the area@@michaeltutty1540

Hats off to you for saving this beautiful old girl from the junkyard. Then again, for $500 you'd have been crazy not to! I love these big old boats from the Sixties and Seventies. As someone below said, they are always outnumbered at shows by the predictable Mustangs, Corvettes and Camaros, but despite costing a fraction of those cars, this one would get a lot more attention from me. It's everything a proper, classic American sedan should be.
Legend has it that this was the quietest riding car in the world when it was new.
There is a good reason why this Imperial looks like the 1961 Lincoln Continental. Both cars were designed by Elwood Engel, who worked for Ford in the late 1950s, then left and worked for Chrysler. He replaced the famous Virgil Exner!

William Reed Even if Chrysler didn't mass produce the turbine engine, it would've been nice to see them drop a V-8 in the car and sell them. It was a very good looking design. Check out a Chrysler Turbine on Jay Leno's Garage.

Great score!!!! What a shame it would have been if it did go to the salvage yard for no reason at all! Its even more a shame that people would even get that idea for a nice rare car like a 60's Imperial! The Imperial was one of the best cars you could buy at one time and rivaled both Cadillac and Lincoln. The best years for the Imperial was between 1955 and 1968.
God Bless You. You have saved a very Rare American Automobile that was practically built be hand. Only 11,628 Imperial Crown 4Dr Sedans were built and only 2,164 Imperial Lebaron 4Dr sedan built in 1965. One of Imperial's Best Sales Years Ever. These cars are unique from other Chrysler Corporation Products. Many Different Dimensions, everything is Heavier and more Robustly Built. These cars are banned from Demolition Derbies. Only 1967 and Up Imperial's are allowed in competition for Demolition Derbies. 1967 was the first year for Unit Body Construction in the Imperial Line. All Previous Imperials had Separate Frame and Body Construction on Heavier Frames Than Other Chrysler Products and Other Manufacturers.
Actually 65 was not a good selling year, but the first year of this design 1964 is like#2 in best sales years for imperial, they were 1957, 64, and 69
Omy!! The imperial was as luxurious as a Rolls Royce or Bentley!! Thats a keeper!!!! So classy well fitted. Hope you still have it and cherish it and conserv it.

440 great. I learned to drive in a Chrysler Newport Custom that had a 440. Fast. Best car ever.1968 Chrysler.
The am/fm radio alone is worth getting that car. Those were rarely seen during that era.

I had a 440 High Performance Engine and when it had about 45,000 miles on it it would stop running at a stop light after a high-speed run on the local Parkway. Turned out that the fuel pump had a laminated arm and it ground down the one end of the fuel pump push rod and there wasn't any push on the fuel pump at idle
so fortunately a fuel pump push rod fell out about the third time I tried to change out the fuel pump and you could tell right away it was ground down. I got a new push rod from the dealer and it was fine after that.

My dad had a 1964 Imperial Crown Coupe. That had a 413 dual quad wedge engine!!! Push button shift with a clear octagonal steering wheel!! That car could light the tires up with posi! He bought it brand new!
Fantastic cars. Great you bought it and a total bargain or potential profit if you sell to the right guy. There's a lot of love for these excellent vehicles.

One of our neighbors had a '64 Crown Coupe parked in the street in front of their house. Neighbor next to them had a brand new '69 Fury Sport Suburban. Mom with the Sport Suburban backed out of her driveway and was waving bye to her kids when she took off, ran smack into the left fender edge of the Crown. The Crown had a small dent in the chrome molding, the Fury needed a new bumper, grille and hood.
My dad and I have five of these cars and they all were for sale on the demo derby market, but we saved them all from getting smashed.

Yeah Its pretty nice considering its age it still needs little paint work on passenger side but I cant complain I feel it was a good deal.

really not restoring it the people I got it from her dad started working on it but never finished. I'm just picking up the pieces where he left off.

Five hundred bucks for that? Boy are you one lucky soul! Funny the previous owner didn't ask five THOUSAND for it! The car is in good shape and mostly all the parts are still there. And it's running! You don't see too many old Imperials these days!
Mid 60's Imperials were designed by Elwood Engel, who had been hired from by Chrysler from Ford Lincoln because of his slab sided look 1961 Lincoln Connie. Hence the common design aesthetic. I'm glad you rescued this, I hope it gets a set of white wall tyres to set it off.
Did Engel design this one? Has some traits of Exner's design still like the windshield. Maybe Engel's designs came with the 1967 Imperial

Had a '66 Imperial...Wish i still owned this AWESOME car!
I remember these cars man great find. Back in the day. I found a 63. W100 Dodge powerwagon shortbed step side light yellow had 3/4 ton axles 8 lug wheels 17 inch rims with snow tires it was an old cal trans truck snow plow rig originally had a six cly engine but when I found this beast the previous owner swapped in a rebuilt police interceptor motor in it. 440 magnum 4 barrel mated to the original 4 speed with rock crawler 1 st gear had 4:11 gear ratio 4 inch lift with 33 inch norseman off roaders on it the 17 inch wheels were in the truck bed. man this truck was fast and what a hill climber it would go in sand river beds mud, hills un stoppable tons of torque and alot of power wish I would have kept her, the 440 was a good motor that's when has was cheap. have fun enjoy your ride.

Nice vid ! The 65 Imperial was the Chrysler Flagship..... Queen sister to the New Yorker and 300 Series.... I owned a 65 Crown Coupe Imperial....triple black.......she turned heads when I drove her around.......Cadillac....Lincoln......Imperial ruled USA roads in the 60's........these were GM, Ford and Chrysler's finest cars ....... All American Icon motor cars in style, power and class

Great car. I'd picked up a 1966 Chrysler Newport convertible under similar situation for $800. Loved driving that car.
I had a 1960 Imperal Crown that was decked out with every option you could put in one. I had a 413 with the cross ram intake. I bought it for $200 from an old retired farmer. The only thing wrong with the car was a power steering pump that spewed fluid all over the engine bay and a broken motor mount. It needed a new battery also. It cost me an additional $80 to fix everything. It didn't have a scratch on the paint and after it was cleaned and polished it could have passed for a new car. It had 57K on it when I bought it. It was an absolute beast on the highway. One finger steering and power drum brakes that would really stop the car. If you were going anywhere over 35 mph and stomped the accelerator it would take off like a giant rocket ship and it didn't shift until it hit 85 mph from passing gear. The only bad thing about the car was that it did not matter how you drove it you were not going to get any better than 12 mpg. That engines intake and carbeurator was huge and you could actually watch the guage move if you kept your foot in it very long.

Incredible save! I can't believe someone would want to scrap a time capsule like that. I love these old Chryslers. They are so unique and different than the "cookie cutter' Gm's and Fords. That's why I love my Oldsmobile's. They are different enough that they stand out. Thanks for saving it!
Glad you rescued it, the white/blue color combination is nice, and it's in pretty good condition. The blue top isn't stock, but sets off the interior nicely. I have seen restoration projects starts with much worse. Imps might not be as sought after as other 60's muscle cars, but they have a lot more class, and you can get a lot more car for a lot less money. A little cleanup, and you'd have a comfortable, classic cruiser that isn't just like all the other cars at the Cruise-In. Good luck with it.

Such a beautiful car.
Beginning in 1955, Imperial became a separate brand. Older than 1955 are Chrysler Imperial models. From 1957-1966 the Imperial had its own frame and body. The Chryslers in those same years had uni-body construction - completely different. Only the drive-trains were similar. This makes finding body parts difficult.
There are high temperature valve cover gaskets available for both the 413 and 440 engines. These engines run so hot with the exhaust manifolds so close to them that they definitely need the high temperature gaskets. Cork gaskets just get cooked!

I had a '68 Chrysler 300 that someone, a Chevron garage in Kohala, yanked the 440 and put in 2bbl.383. A good car. I got t-boned by a Sentra in 2000. He was a total loss, he wrecked my fender skirt. I had a valid license, insurance &c, not bad for $1250. Had about 20,000 on the 383. Elwood Engel designed the '61 Continental, and was shortly hired by Chrysler. In '65 his "Pure" cars came our at Chrysler. I like the '64s the best, but they all rock. Good on ya for saving that one. Check Hemmings and you can probably find NOS heater controls, and anything else for that car.

Great find. rare options, auto dimming, AM/FM etc. I had a '65 LeBaron that also had dual A/C and was loaded to the gills. Rode like a car should. Great find.

In 1984, my dad bought a car off an elderly man that handed down his Chrysler dealership to his sons. He hardly ever drove his 1965 Chrysler Windsor. My dad bought it for $2000. The car had 8000 original miles. That wasn't a misprint! The car was still brand new! The paint was faded a bit, The original tires looked perfect but we changed them for radials as we were concerned about 19 year old tire rubber. When the 383 motor was started, you would could hardly hear it run. You got a great deal. If you fix the small things, you will have a car that will be worth some real money.

people are crazy to want to junk that car. cars of those days are 10 times better then the junk on the road today, front wheel drive recycled steel and plastic that rusts through in a year.
Yeah you can tell the difference in this beast compared to a new car . its a built like a tank .
And also, those days cars, this one in particular, do about 4 miles per gallon...
