Surprisingly I just asked it a question that would put China in a negative light. It began to answer and started detailing different things that the United States and China have done to cause mass deaths. After about 5 seconds it deleted everything it wrote and then it gave the same message that you showed on the screen. So to me it seems that the model is capable of being truthful but that there are software filters in place that catch those things. I would like to try on the offline models because this is open source if I do I'll let you know.
The main task in adapting the platform is fixing things like that, removing all the filtering built into it.

AI could benefit many people, but the US government and its tech companies tried to keep the core technology for themselves. China now broke this monopoly, and I'm sorry if that is not helpful for his narrative, but it is good that these models and how to design them are now in the common domain so that everyone, not just the US, can benefit.
-Chinese CCP could be influencing DeepSeek and spying on users, good for pointing that out. But he is suggesting that the US is somehow different? We all know the US and NSA does not have a great track record. The example of someone from DeepSeek meeting with a Chinese official while ignoring the tech billionaires paying for Trump's inauguration and standing right besides him is quite hypocritical.
-DeepSeek R1 might be doing something similar to OpenAI o1, but the main difference is that it is free, open source, and can be trained much more efficiently. It's not just another ChatGPT, it is fundamentally different in that it democratizes the AI model to anyone who wants to build their own model.

Just to clarify, there's two types of DeepSeek, the online version ran from cloud software, which is the one you get through the app. And then there is you downloading the source code and running an offline version in your own machine, preferably in a GPU. The later is, as far as I understand, safe and sound. It will even answer questions about Tiananmen and Xii et al. It can still have biases from its training data, but if you are using it for scientific problem solving and other academic research on non political topics it is perfectly understandable why you'd use the most efficient model that fits in your local workstation and can be modified and fine tuned at will. Since it is open source, you can just modify it and use it at will, including for commercial purposes. This doesn't undermine the points you brought up about the app, which are sadly missing from most of the media coverage, but I thought it was important to prevent undue generalizations. Developer here. Deepseek has a freely downloadable version that, to current knowledge, does not "phone home" if run locally on your computer. Doing this does require more computing knowledge than the average user, and a higher-level computer to run, but it does run. 🍯

Sorry to say, Chris, but you've got this one wrong (full of incorrect information): It is true that, if/when you use it on the web (which is hosted in China), you get the restrictions and the data collection issues. However, getting the OpenSource model and putting it on your own server makes those things not applicable. You can change the weights so that the censorship disappears, and because it is on your own server, there's no data trafficking through China.
I hope you didn't overlook these things as doing so would amount to deceptive journalism.
As if that matters, The AI is still a dumbass at answering certain questions, and always will be, like all AI, due to restrictions put in place, Updated versions of AI don't Update, They just restrict and censor more topics, Try asking the AI certain questions, and it will give you a very generalised answer that isn't helpful, Try asking AI how to make a more free thinking AI, and it will tell you something along the lines of Generalised Developer Advice that's not actually that helpful, and "I can't answer that question due to "Moral Implications and safety issues" and other such run around BS, it can start to feel like your talking to a Polititian.
And how many people are going to put AI on their Own Server? Probly not as many as you seem to think, it's likely less then 1/10 of users will do that, and you don't know if the Opensource AI on it's own server isn't uploading user data, how can you be so Sure? The thing is that most people associate and even equate the word "Open-source" with "safety". Even I used to think so. Deepseek could be safe if you host it natively on your own server but most people just download the app or use their website, agreeing to their T&Cs in the process. They are ignorant, and those who aren't, chose to do it the easy way...
The reason I said that the natively hosted Deepseek "could be safe" is because even they can contain codes deliberately written with malicious inentions. Don't forget that these models are huge in size. The fastest model (the one that actually beat ChatGPT) taking 400GB+ in memory. It could take a lot of effort to find such malicious pieces of code.
This has happened before in other OSSs. So I won't be surprised if something like that occurs here as well...

500B USD goes for the hardware. So if you have more efficient LLMs, you use 500B of hardware to run more of it, faster. You lose nothing, you can just do even more with it.

The more data the AI is trained on, the more hardware needed, the more power needed to run it. Some estimates stating true AGI would require 50% of americas current power production.
The entire concept is overkill and most of the spending would be training on useless data it has to query upping costs with no benefit.
@ I am an engineer and work with AI every day. The more data you have (trillions of tokens), the more compute you need to train the model, but it is absolutely not true that you need more compute to run it (inference). Inference depends on model width, depth and quantization level. 2 years old GPT-4 had much much higher inference costs than capability equivalent today GPT-4o-mini (actually 1000x cheaper today for same quality).
@ You don't need AGI for the AI to be extremely useful and profitable (it is already at this stage, and it's still improving every week, every month). Even in current state of AI research, it will take us next 10-15 years to implement AI absolutely everywhere where we can. That 500B will pay back easily.

Well, reality show the opposite. AIs trained on Chinese perform better since the individual characters in latent highedimensional space are better distringuished by their meaning than in English. Example: Cell. The word cell could be related to technology (energy cell, battery cell) or to medicine and biology (single cell organism). In Chinese those two concepts have completely individual characters, which helps to create more precise outputs. English for translation into latent space and back, is the inferior language here.
