Meet Homeless College Professor Who Lives in Her Car

Ellen James-Penney loves being an English professor. But when she leaves work at San Jose State University, she heads home to her car. Believe it or not, she’s not the only professor living this way. Michelle Mitchell, an adjunct professor of religion at Florida’s Broward College, lives out of a van. For both these dedicated teachers, the fear of being homeless takes a backseat to the fear of leaving the profession they love. #InsideEdition

It's likely that the SJSU professor is not teaching full-time. It's much more common for adjunct faculty to be assigned less than a full-time teaching load. However, even if she were full-time in the fall and spring semesters, that still leaves two months (summer) where she may not earn a paycheck from SJSU.

Because studios in California cost a ridiculous amount. Depending where you live in San Jose, a studio can almost cost you from $1400 and upwards of $2,000 monthly. That would equal to $16,800-$24,000 a year in rent alone. That doesn’t include utilities, groceries, gas, car insurance or car payments.

I pray that a door opens for them to get a place. We stayed in San Jose 2 years ago in a dumpy hotel. One week stay was $1000 a week. & That was 5 of us crammed into one room.
