St James' Church, Sheldwich and its history The village of Sheldwich was first recorded in the year 784. Its importance came from its position astride the highway between the port of Faversham and the market of Ashford. The road was turnpiked about 1765 and the old toll house window can still be seen beside the A251 road. When St James' was built almost a thousand years ago, it was just a chapel to Faversham church and only became a parish in the 14th century. The subsequent history of the church can be found at www.stjames.sheldwich.org/. The Sondes family of Lees Court www.faversham.org/pages/standa... who came to Sheldwich from Throwley 912458 in the 16th century are heavily represented among the church memorials. The last of the name was buried here in 1996.

1633, 4 years before my mom's ancestors left for the Massachusetts Bay Colony from King's Lynn and Bishops Strortford. Structure could have been a recieving tomb for winter burials. When the ground was too hard/ frozen to dig.
