    Hello from Oklahoma! Interesting Video. Why not just leave your soup, stew or chili in the can, poke a hole and heat it up. A whole lot easier. Fun ideas. God Bless!

    What a great idea for those cheap tent stakes that come with a lot of tarps. and I always enjoy ideas for lite weight day gear. and a snack and Coffie are always better in the woods. Thanks Blackie.

    Blackie, I simply cannot watch your Silver Wolves series without chucklin' and grinnin'. Your description of sitting by the lakeside or in a deer stand just watching is perfect, just my style these days. I will admit that I'm in no hurry these days, unless I'm waiting on my coffee. For that, I do like my microwave, on the other hand, I don't mind building a small campfire ... that's a whole 'nuther kind of waiting!
    Btw: I love the simplicity of your tent-stake pot stand. Why have I never thought of that??
    Attaboy, Blackie, *_keep 'em coming and have a wonderful time in October!_*

    Thanks for another good video. On the topic of immersion heating, years ago I purchased a product years ago called a Bakepacker. It was a circular device with an aluminium grid about 1 inch deep in the bottom. It was available in different sizes to fit spicific pots. You would put it in a pot, fill with water to the top of the grid, place your food in a plastic bag, set it on the grid, put the pot lid on and cook your food. You could cook anything, even bake a cake or bread. Just a bag to trash...no pot to clean. The only stipulation was to use only Glad food storeage bags, (open top, Non-zip lock type), or oven bags. Just fold the top of the bag back and forth and put the lid on. The reason given is that not all clear plastic bage are made from the same type of plastic. Some would impart an unpleasant odor and taste to your food. The bags that they specified would NOT! A good thing to be mindful of if that becomes an issue!

    Awesome. i used to keep a couple sternos in a kit, as a "just in case", and made myself get used to fighting the urge to casually use them. so they were always there, if all my other fire methods can't be used, or failed, i could always fall back on them. i am not going to not have coffee. it just isn't happening 😂
    anyways, after a while i was like, man these things are so cheap, i just wanna use one. making a fire or setting up a stove and cleaning it all up takes time. i wanted a coffee right now. pull out a bic, light it, and 5-10 mins i'm good.. it lasted long enough, and worked so well, i just got 2 more to use as main ways to heat water. no coals, no mess, nothing extra, self contained, extremely easy to acquire, yes these are a miracle hack all around! great video

    Remember the stove you made in scouts? Old low base can (tuna can) cut strips of carboard to fit inside & tightly wrapped inside on end & saturated in paraffin wax. Can't remember how hot they'd get, but we'd set them under a larger can that would act as a hotplate or base.

    I’ve had two cans of sterno along with a sterno stove in my pickup since about 1995. In 2015 I opened one of the sterno cans and with a lighter it lit up no problem. I put the lid back on and it’s still in my truck. That sterno fuel is some serious long term storage that will be there when you need it.

      I can see some benefit in knowing how to and being able to, "just in case needed", but the wear and tear they put on their legs and feet and heart isn't worth it to do long term. I was thinking about it myself, lately.

      @@thankmelater1254 Wear in tear ok . Keep you strong. But it's like moving to fast and don't even get to take it all in. On how pretty the surroundings are. And live in the now . They just got to make it too hear or make it there . And the food every one is hiking with is a rip off. What happened to the days when people new how to cook a great meal on the trail. Pancakes 🥞 eggs 🥚 Spam or corn beef hash. Ham and Bacon 🥓. Hash browns. Home fry's . Home made bread 🍞 . I don't know about anyone else. But cooking in a water bottle cup sucks. A U . S . In the UK you can get Firedragon gel at most outdoor stores, and it works with a variety of stoves, better than Sterno by far.

  • @jeffconley6366
    @jeffconley6366 ปีที่แล้ว

    Trangia burner would be great for this as well. Sterno makes a nice folding stove that works great. With a little modification will also work with Trangia burner.

    It’s been awhile since I’ve played with gel fuel, a few weeks ago I purchased a couple can’s. So if it’s a nice morning I like to make my coffee in the backyard. Sometimes I use a FireBox Nano or the Titanium canteen set with stove stand with an alcohol burner. With a full canteen cup & alcohol stove it takes about 10 to 12 minutes to boil the water , with the gel fuel it’s 25 to 30 minutes for full boil.

    • @BLACKIETHOMAS
      @BLACKIETHOMAS  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yep gel is way slow if you need a boil but if all your doing is heating gel is ok

    😂 I resemble these remarks! Just not much worth me going to without my haversack and my lil’ cookset. My rusty, old truck is my cleanup creek even if I’m not close to to more water than my 2quart canteen. I usually lean on my alcohol stove for most outings.

  • @ahabstar
    @ahabstar ปีที่แล้ว

    I have used the tuna can buddy burner with alcohol instead of wax. And laid tent stakes between too wrist sized branches as a grill rack for cooking out of a pot or pan many times. Even during power outages in the winter, with the window cracked open a bit of course.

    Hey Blackie! Good stuff, thanks for posting! As you know I have finally reached the twilight years, the autumn of my existence as it were, and as such I have turned a new leaf, my current motto is "start out slow and taper off". My idea of enjoyment is relaxation and a time of quiet reflection. The camp chair in a shady spot and maybe a cuppa' Joe and a sandwich while I'm watchin' the bass jump or the eagles circling. I have never been a proponent of Sterno, would much rather heat up my canteen cup over a twig fire using the same three, "fire irons" as you describe. Again good stuff! Love to all, Pink.
