Hanle is a remote and tranquil village located in the Changthang region of Ladakh, India. Nestled at an altitude of about 4,500 meters (14,764 feet), Hanle is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, clear night skies, and the historic Hanle Monastery. It is one of the highest and most secluded human settlements in the world, offering an unparalleled experience for those seeking solitude, natural beauty, and a deep connection with the cosmos.
Hanle Monastery: Founded in the 17th century, the Hanle Monastery (also known as Hanle Gompa) is a significant cultural and spiritual site. It belongs to the Drukpa lineage of Tibetan Buddhism and is perched on a hill, offering stunning panoramic views of the valley below.
Indian Astronomical Observatory: Hanle is home to one of the world’s highest observatories, the Indian Astronomical Observatory, operated by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics. Its location, far from city lights and at a high altitude, makes it one of the best places on Earth for astronomical observations. The observatory is a key site for astronomical research, and the night skies here are a dream for stargazers and astrophotographers.
Stargazing and Astrophotography: Hanle’s clear, unpolluted skies offer some of the most incredible stargazing opportunities in the world. The Milky Way, constellations, and planets are visible with stunning clarity, making Hanle a popular destination for astrophotography enthusiasts.
Scenic Beauty and Wildlife: The landscapes of Hanle are characterized by vast plains, rolling hills, and distant mountain ranges. The region is part of the Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary, which is home to rare species like the Tibetan wild ass (kiang), Tibetan gazelle, and migratory birds such as the black-necked crane.
Visiting Hanle:
Hanle is about 254 kilometers (158 miles) from Leh, and the journey itself is an adventure, taking you through some of Ladakh’s most stunning and remote landscapes. The road to Hanle passes through high-altitude passes and offers views of pristine lakes and vast open plains.
Due to its remote location and the fragile ecosystem, travel to Hanle requires permits from the Indian authorities. The village has limited facilities, with basic accommodation options, so visitors should be prepared for a rustic experience. However, for those who venture to this far-flung corner of the world, Hanle offers a unique and unforgettable experience, far from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

Hey desi girl traveller. We have just been on this same road, location. Was with a group of veterans, running super high altitude ultra run. And yes , even our expression was exactly same as yours on seeing the natural beauty.
