    Ian Anderson who is the lead singer is brilliant. Jethro Tull is part Prog Rock/ Medieval Minstrel band. A great deal of their songs are about the human condition. Yes, their music is like a rock opera and their performances are always like this. Please check out Locomotive Breath. I won't spoil the surprise but their is another musical aspect that Ian Anderson is famous for that wasn't in this song. 😉 Good Morning from Canada 🇨🇦

    Probably worth checking out the live performance of Jethro Tull's 'Thick as a Brick' from their iconic Madison Square Garden NY performance from 1978: lots of Ian Anderson's impressive eccentric stage presence but also includes his manic and amazing flute playing skills!

    Aqualung is a homeless man and the perception is that he's dirty, with "greasy fingers smearing shabby clothes", and "eyeing little girls with bad intent". But then the lyrics shift to a sympathetic view of the "poor old sod", whose "back is hurting bad", and who should not be afraid of the singer, because, "my friend, it's only me." He's called Aqualung because his lungs have the "rattley" sound of a deep sea diver. The song goes back to the start with the usual perception of the homeless ... sitting on a park bench.
    Lead singer and songwriter, Ian Anderson is a musical genius. As others have suggested, you need to see "Thick As A Brick" live at Madison Square Garden.

    You have an incredible eye, Harri. You had been watching him sing this song for about fifteen seconds and you called him out for his theatrics, long before you had any idea of how theatrical he can be! Ian Anderson has to be one of the most amazing live performers in rock and roll history!

    Probably my favorite band. Saw them many times live. Ian Anderson is definitely a performer. As others have suggested, Thick as a Brick live in Madison Square Garden in 1978 would be a great version to react to.

    I was bartending in Columbia South Carolina in 1976 and Ian Anderson' and the Jethro Tull band were all sitting at a table (they were playing at a college and were staying at the hotel ! )well I was off duty and there was a band playing and I felt like dancing so I walked over to their table and asked one of the girls if she wanted to dance! so we did ! Well they all left to go to their rooms and I was back on duty ,and one of the waitresses said "did you know who you danced with well It was Ian Anderson's Wife! Lol I did not know who the band was at the time ! Love your show and Great reaction!

    Jethro Tull was one of the premier live arena rockNroll touring acts of the 1970's and 80's - and exists even to this day as a vehicle for Ian Anderson. "Aqualung" has been a hard rocking radio/satellite/streaming staple since its release and is considered a hard rock classic - it was JT's first hit in the US. The period shown here is JT's 3rd major incarnation with IA as its only constant member and lead guitar Martin Barre having been with JT since 1968. JT from the Aqualung album 1971 thru Stormwatch 1979 is widely considered JT's "best" or classic years. You might consider reacting to some of JT's material from this period - no one else was doing anything like Jethro Tull and IA has to be counted as one of the greatest front men of the "live rock era."

  • @genov9374

    Its 2 views of a homeless guy-the rock version is the typical way society looks at homeless people. The acoustic part is the sympathetic view of watching a lonely homeless man - "picking up pieces of his broken luck". Other references include "salvation alamode with a cup of tea", talking about the salvation army. You might already know, but a "dog end" is British slang for a cigarette butt and "goes down to the barque? to warm his feet" is slang for a public restroom. Ian Anderson is the most eccentric lead man in rock. Try their "Locomotive Breath" live. I think you will like it.

    Saw this band a couple of times, the first time our seats were in the middle of the front row and the memory of Ian Anderson's eyes seemingly staring straight through me as he stood foot resting on a slave speaker while he played will be with me forever. Funny start to the concert as well as we watched patiently as these dudes in trench-coats wandered the stage twiddling knobs and plugging things in as the minutes ticked past starting time, our 'muddled' thoughts thinking ok enough roadie work when all of sudden they took their coats off and started playing, yes they were the band.

    Ian Anderson.....”performance art”.....reminds me of the vocalist and founder of The Talking Heads....same eccentric behavior and high energy on stage. This is about a homeless man with tuberculosis (coughing up bits of his lungs) and how he is perceived by the rest of society (the wealthy man)....it has a social message. Cross-eyed Mary is a follow-up song to this one.

    Follow up with "Cross-eyed Mary" it mentions Aqualung. This song is about how homeless are perceived, or possibly how one homeless man was. Watching little girls at school or the park. Did he have tuberculosis?

  • @BKPrice
    @BKPrice 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The song is about the same homeless man from two points of view. The more rock sections represent the world's view of the man as some dirty old man and drunk, while the softer acoustic parts are from a more empathetic perspective seeing him as a down-on-his-luck man who is near death from freezing. Basically it contrasts the worldy unsympathetic view of the poor and homeless with a more compassionate view of people in desperate straits.
