    That makes life soo much easier! i see you have the stress and displacement equations in you second tab.. would you be able to share how you were able to get these in excel? are you using the FEM Method?

      Hi. Yes, it was an FEM assignment. However I did this 10 years ago for my final year at university so I'm not sure if I still have that file. If I do I'll link it here later.

    hi, i have a question:
    I want excel to do the follwoing:
    i have a matrix an a result matrix. i want the multiplikator matrix.
    so i do:
    =MMULT(MINV(F3:H5);I3:I5)
    But now i want excel to calculate as long as it has only positiv result.
    example with inccorect numbers: 1,2,3;4,5,6;7,8,9 is my 3x3 matrix. the result matrix ist 12,13,14
    the result for example could be -2,4,7
    i dont want the -2. i need only positive results like 2,7,8.
    Do you have an idea?

    Thank you, but I have a question what if the value of the “m x n” matrix has a complex number? Can you provide a video on how to show the result in an inverse matrix with a complex value “a+jb”

      Hi, I don't think excel can do that kind of thing. If it's possible, I certainly don't know how. You may want to look into using something like Mathematica or Matlab if your matrix has complex elements. BTW, if your matrix is not square (i.e. not mxm size) then I don't think an inverse exists. So you can't find the inverse of an "m x n" matrix!

      So you are trying the same multiplication and it comes out with a different answer? What answer do you get? Can you put the file on dropbox or googledrive and put a link here

      That is so strange! I've tried the same on my computer and I'm getting the correct result.
      What language is your excel in? Is the language right to left by any chance?

    I only get the first element A x B result 10 and on other values. I follow exactly as per video, highlight 3 x 3 range and mmult formula. I'm missing something - please help. Thanks Guy P

      You need to first select a 3x3 set of cells before typing it in, and then press cntrl+shift+enter. Hope this helps.

      If you invert a matrix and then invert it again then you get back the original matrix. Do you want to invert the same matrix multiple times?

    thanks for your help :D, i can now calculate the inverse of a matrix 5x5 after seeing this video :D! However, i dont know how to do the same thing without Excel :(, i mean how we can calculate both the determinant and the inverse of a matrix 5x5 in paper?

    how do we multiply a matrix with a scalar in excel, I have got a big problem cos of that. :(

      It's very similar, don't use the MMult command. Select the cells where you want the answer to be, type for e.g. =A4*C4:D5 (here A4 holds the scalar and C4 to D5 holds the matrix) then press ctrl+shit+enter

      Hifas Faiz thanks, but I already exactly did that and got value error. Maybe because I have formulas (calculated formulas) within the matrix and in scalar multiplier.

    ok, I know you can do matrix manipulations in excel, but why would you?
    If you want software which comes in a nice shiny package use: MatLab, Maple, or Mathematica.
    If you want software which is free use: Octave, Maxima, or PyLab
    Spreadsheets in general and excel in particular are over-rated and over-used, the time you spend learning a proper piece of mathematical software will pay off, and quicker than you expect.

      Check that your matrixes are always squared (Columns=Rows) 3x3,4x4,etc.

    If you use only NxN matrices as examples, then you'll never see you need to switch row count and column count.

      Do you mean I should have shown some examples of mxn examples? If so, I definitely agree I should have.
      This was one of the first videos I uploaded to youtube, didn't really put much thought into making it at the time.
