Thank you for identifying the birds.
Has it occurred to you that an 18 month 2023 calendar using photos of the birds as illustration, might be a good merchandise product?

My vote is for plain rusty tin shingles, it will pair nicely with raw desert brown earth. Paint would look great for a year or two but then it will peel off or get rusty. Go for low maintenance!

I'm down to about 10 to 12 gallons per week after getting rid of the water wasting toilet, but that's not including the Aquaponics system.
I am constantly upgrading and increasing the size of the AP system so its difficult to calculate its usage
    So far.
I now have a greater apretiation for the rains no matter how little.
Thanks for sharing and a always keep building 👍

Water Harvesting, especilly dry land harvesting, is such an art form with a suspenseful edge. We have had the same "drips and drabs" here for the last few weeks, and I really want it for the groundwater recharge and my tanks :(
I hope you get more, and I am sure you will. La Nina is starting to show itself here, but not sure how your area will experience it?
Keep it up guys, desert life is tough and amazing at the same time.

Great progress 👍👌 great to see an old southwest tradition continue using cans to weather proof things.
Just A thought is the flashing aluminum, your dry climate you live in may protect against galvanic reaction between the steel shingles and how you use the flashing. Maybe some roofing felting may sepperate the two materials enough.
    Just a thought

20 Gallons per week! So impressive. I’m south of SV and we don’t seem to get as much rain. Ive been on my property 6 months and average 375 -500 gallons per month. I was so impressed with my 375 month but now feel like a water hog. I have no well and am working to dial in my usage. I am not flushing toilets, have 4 chickens and a dog, a couple cats and rabbits. My showers are intermittent and laundry maybe 4 loads max per month. All greywater is being used in plants. Have you done videos on how you save on water so awesomely. Thanks for the videos. Great motivation!

I hope your water proves to be enough to see you through. The building work does seem to be the most water intensive, so if you can survive that and get a decent monsoon season, then with the cistern now taking in water you could be better set up for next year. That's my impression from here in the UK at least. I'm just going off what I learned growing up off-grid with an iffy water supply. Not the same as desert living by a long shot, but you certainly get an appreciation of how much water you use in those types of situations.
The tedious jobs are often the ones where we learn about ourselves, so while I'm sure you'll be glad to get the metal cutting finished, those shingles will be a source of pride for many years to come.
Looking forward to what is next on the jobs you have planned.
    Stay safe, everyone.

Have you considered using a lime stucco (non-cement) to protect your building. The old Spanish Missions used a mixture that included prickley pair juice that does a real good job and can breathe. There was a really good " This Old House" show that showed why it was better than cement based stucco.

There are different ways of making a level gauge. For the gabion cisterm, you can have a dipstick with a floater at the bottom. The more water, the more the dipstick, sticks out from the roof. For the plastic tanks, a rope through a hole in the top. A weighted floater on the end of the rope inside the tank, an equal weight on the other end of the rope. The lower the outside weight, the more water.

It's so dry except for the monsoon season it might last a long time. To have corrosion between metals you have to have water involved so it might work just fine. We'll just have to watch and see.

First matter at hand, rain, I will help, manifest some super dubba rainstorms before the rainy season, because it is obvious you need that water. Patience and determination are working for you. Great words to reflect on while cutting the shingles. Some young kids 5, 7, and 8 two girls and one boy, and to get them to just sit and talk, I PRINTED the word patience and they had learn to use a needle and thread and learn the word patience. It worked.
