i just don't have time anymore to play my RPGs, but with that said i have all my RPGs under my bed. Three of which were on your list & they are Lufia & the Fortress of Doom, EarthBound & Final Fantasy 3. Why do i keep them there? For the unlikely event that i get sick & then i have all the time in the world to play these games. i feel my sickness doesn't stay long because i'm so happy to have time to play my longer video games & then i'm like dang it i have to go back to work! Video Games while sick is great medicine!
The 7th Saga is one of favorite RPG I've never beat. Its just so damn hard because of what Enix did when they brought it over to the USA. Every few years, I try again but never finish it.
I want to thank you for the clip of FF VI that you showed. I've been getting the bug of wanting to play that game again, and found it on Steam. So I've been playing through it and missed the esper I could get in the clip you showed. I wasn't to far beyond that point, and was able to go and get it.
Most I ever played an SNES game had to be Killer Instinct. More than 60 hrs easy. Because of 2 player. If any RPG? Id say Final Fantasy II (4). The storyline is so good
Not much to say about these games, I never played any of them except FFIII (my second-favorite game on the console after Link to the Past), and Ultima VII on PC (not SNES). But can I just say how awesome it is that someone decided to name their RPG “Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen” after two epic songs on the most obscure album in Queen’s catalog (Queen II)? Someone on the development staff was obviously a huge fan of the band, and I love it. We need more games with names like that.
Maybe it’s just me, but the first time playing some of these like FF6 it took me almost 60 hours no guide. Same with Earthbound. I don’t think it had a game clock but I’d estimate close to that as well. It certainly felt long!
While not quite fitting for this list, each individual chapter for Genealogy of the Holy War after Prologue can easily take a few hours due them being usually massive. The closest the series has gotten to that since then is the Day Breaks chapter in Path of Radiance, but there they had the common sense to split the map up into different parts.
Ah, Harvest Moon! Im a city guy that has never farmed in my life but I still bought this game and had some fun with it. The music was pretty cool and peaceful. If you haven’t done so already, try doing a top ten which gaming system did it better. Get a game like John Madden Football and in your opinion, compare the SNES and Genesis versions only. I think that would be fun. 🤷♂️ Other games you can compare for both systems: Alladin, Mortal Kombat, Jurassic Park, Street Fighter, etc. Sometimes, people would have debates as to which one was better.
There's stuff like Virtua Racing 32X vs Saturn, Daytona USA Saturn (there are three release versions) vs Dreamcast, Gauntlet Legends N64 vs Dreamcast, Prince of Persia SNES vs Genesis, Prince of Persia Sharp X68000 vs FM Towns, Dragon Spirit: The New Legend NES vs Dragon Spirit Turbografx-16, YS 1 and 2 Famicom vs Turbografx 16 CD, Resident Evil: Director's Cut vs Resident Evil: Deadly Silence, Alone in the Dark PC-98 vs FM Towns, Final Fantasy 1 and 2 GBA vs PSP, Harvest Moon 64 vs Back to Nature, and Rayman 2 PS1 vs PS2.
There is a series like that in action right now called Console Clash, so far there is only one episode, but because you requested it, I'll put it on the priority list. The biggest issue is that it's a collaboration so there are time frames involved for two people.
The longest one I've ever played through, by a pretty wide margin was Tactics Ogre, the sequel to Ogre Battle. The Fire Emblem games, Uncharted Waters New Horizons, and Shin Megami Tensei 2 all took me an incredibly long time too. Might and Magic I'm dreading having to play eventually, because a gigillion hours of first person dungeon crawling seems like hell. Ultima 7 snes is super short though, 10ish hours, the hours info you got are probably confusing it with the PC version.
Is there a translation for Tactics Ogre? If so I need to check it out. I do separate super famicom vs super Nintendo, but I agree, Fire Emblem is super long, I tried SO hard to get into the first one, I couldn't. You might be right on Ultima VII
i find completing an RPG 100% depends a lot on how you set the parameters, if you mean it in the sense that you max out in every way possible, do all side/secret content and when applicable get all the endings, then yeah it's gonna add a lot more game time.
Ha! I'm currently playing Lufia 2! Love the game so far! Can't believe I never played it back in the days. I played Lufia 1 and I enjoyed that one, but for some reason, I overlooked it for many years thinking I played it. By the way, at 00:20 and 1:01, what games are those? Are they Congo's Caper and Drakkhen by any chance?
Played 8 of these and beat 7 back in the original SNES era. Can't remember how far I got in Ultima: Black Gate, maybe half way. Love Ultima: The False Prophet, one of my top games of all times. However, I'd suggest Ultima: Quest of the Avatar when you're ready to try an Ultima, especially since it seemed 7th Saga was your favorite on this list. Not as complex as 7th Saga, but in Ultima IV, you also start as one many possibilities and later add the others to your party. I'm partial to the NES, but mostly just because that was what I had it on in my childhood.
also seeing might and magic as #1.... made me so happy, nobody every talks about that series, i can personally beat it in about 8 hours if i tried hard enough, theres some cheese strats you can do
its really weird that i could never finish mario rpg in 1 game rental period, but i did the entire harvest moon snes in 1 rent, i went wild on it waking up at 5 am to play
Wizardry V: Heart of the Maelstrom. Tip. Bring graph paper, notes taking gear, and patience. A D&D styled Dungeon crawler. Easily a 50+ hour game. To beat it you have to track down like 30 different required items. You can cheese the start by spending a while creating super characters by rerolling stats until you get 50+ bonus points. But it won't matter once you hit Dungeon level 3+ because it really ramps up. And may whatever diety you worship have mercy on you if you end up in the Playhouse Mystery Theater. You will not escape. Do not go there....ever. You are also punished with Doppleganger fights at the end if you over level, which is easy to achieve if you visit the optional hell level and fight the bosses there. Great game for those who like Dungeon crawlers. But a damn nightmare of one.
@Fortefyre understandable. I'm replaying the remake to number 1 and it is really straight forward. Definitely a great Dungeon crawler beginners game. Don't jump into 5 as a novice to them at all. The other series I enjoyed is any of the Ys games. I'm almost done with Nordics now, and I have the remake of Wanderers but really wish they would release the source material with the remakes. Especially on SNES and NES games.
Very good video. Just one thing worth mentioning about "The 7th Saga" In the US Version of the game, the stats as you level-up are a little messed-up and increase much less than in the JP version of the game. This doesn't apply to the other apprentices you have to fight in the game though and they level up as you do, which means that the more you level up, the more their stats will grow over yours. I do agree with what you said that grinding might help against regular enemies but you have to be careful because if you level up too much, the other characters might become mostly impossible to defeat. Also, FF6 best game ever :P (and I like that you didn't include FF4 (2) on the list, lots of people do and I always disagree because you can beat it in less than 20 hours)
I really enjoyed Fallout 2 and am interested in hearing what you think of the game and the experience. Good luck finding the G.E.C.K. Great video and keep up the excellent work.
F.Fyre, I totes agree with you when it comes to the Ultima franchise. But you cannot ignore the music from Ultima III Exodus. Some of the best the NES had to offer.

And it doesn't jack your entire team multiple times with the assumption you used all the characters that I didn't really care for and just honestly Sten can catch my Nuts. Sten and his solo story. And my favorite game of the series is BoF3. Amazing! I never beat any of the Ultima games because they felt obtuse and boring after I got 10+ hours in. They're not for me.
