Jones was injured in a car accident in 1970, the year this was made and many (Jones included) believe it contributed to the her vocal waywardness throughout the 70's. This Fidelio sounds as though it might be before the accident, and shows how really impressive and colorful the voice was.
What an amazing cast... you would never see something like this today

I have seen so many versions of Fidelio, because I absolutely love this opera. Non can excide this one! Great singers and actors, wonderful arrangements, vocally surpreme. Very realistic. I am absolutely stunned.

¡Fidelio! La única ópera de Beethoven, pero, ¡qué ópera! Me retrae al lejano año 1977 en que fui por primera vez al Liceo de Barcelona. La temporada fue inaugurada con Fidelio para conmemorar el 150 aniversario de la desaparición del Maestro de Maestros Ludwig van Beethoven. Además, esta representación es única por la insuperable dirección del Maestro Karl Böhm y por todo el elenco de maravillosos cantantes que hicieron posible esta representación única e irrepetible.
Saludos a todos los amantes de la música de verdad.

Film-wise this is surprisingly amazing. It doesn't try to be too fancy but the editing and cinematography are perfectly suited to the music.

Very enjoyable performance. Excellent singing and acting all round.
Fantastic and full of real drama. Perhaps better than more recent productions. Looks like it was staged for camera without audience. Good mixing of the voices in that you can hear each part.

Is there any record of anyone ever having seen Gustav Neidlinger in daylight? I think he really was a vampire.
This one, alongside with Karl Böhm's performance with Christa Ludwig as Fidelio are the best ever.
A vibrant and convincing film, with closeups really bringing the characters to life. I enjoyed the more aggressive Rocco. In response to one commentator,I doubt if Marti T could have managed the stairs to the dungeon,!

Is this lip-synched? Even if it is, I wish for the days of an artist like Gwyneth Jones. She was criticized a great deal, but with the passage of time you can see how great she was.
I agree David. I very much doubt if Gwyneth Jones ever gave anything less than a completely committed performance over a long career and Leonore was one of her best roles.
Some found it difficult to cope with her vocal un -eveness, but even that varied at different moments of her career . Her London Turandots and Isoldes were outstanding for example - the voice really responding to her wishes and matching the physicality of her performance. Above all her voice was an outstanding instrument and she had the interpretive intelligence to match.
Yes, it's a lip-sync movie. Still, you get better sound that way from the old productions---the singers aren't using mics so it was easier to get good sound by dubbing. I'll take it.

Murray Aronson Yes, but Beethoven was really talking about the Napoleonic era in France. As many composers knew, you couldn’t write about many political hot points in their original setting. So he set it in Spain.
Netflix did a long series about French King Louis XV with a handsome British actor (which Louis was not, he was a pig) an spoken in English, so what's your point ? The story is Spanish, the composer was German, so?

Personally I think Jones is a miss-cast in this role, she doesn't have the volume required for Leonore, sounds sqeaky and she is off-key several times. Mind you, I love her in other roles (Marschallin!!!), but this was not her best choice.
However, thanks a million for uploading this, it was a treat.
BiBaBo49 I’m surprised by your reaction! I saw Jones onstage in Fidelio and thought she was sympathetic, vocally and dramatically. And saying Jones didn’t have volume is like saying you couldn’t hear Ethel Merman. There were very few voices that were as powerful as Jones’s. Unfortunately, you had to take the volume and beauty of her voice along with large doses of pitch problems and unsteadiness.
the volume ?? she sang Brünnhilde ... so it's not the volume. Even lyric sopranos and Mezzos sing Leonore.

Eduardo Braivein It is on TH-cam, but audio only, no visual. A shame because Soderstrom was a wonderful Fidelio, and the Glyndebourne theater didn’t tax her voice.
