  • The presentation will connect the traditional genealogy of the O’Neill septs to their genetic signatures using Y STR and haplogroup markers. The focus will be on the Tyrone, McShane, Fews and Clanaboy septs and the unique DNA characteristics of this “O’Neill Variety”. In addition, the Ui Neill as descendants of Nial of the Nine Hostages and his son Eóghain (Cenél Eóghain) will be detailed. Other septs will be highlighted including the O’Neills of Leinster, Eoghanachta and Thomond and how they differentiate. Widespread testing using Big Y has greatly contributed to our current understanding.
This lecture was presented at Genetic Genealogy Ireland 2018 in Dublin. Please note that these GGI2018 videos are copyrighted to the presenter and should only be used for personal study. They are not to be used for any other purpose without the presenter's express permission. Also, please note that because this is a rapidly advancing field, the content may quickly become outdated. The lectures were sponsored by FamilyTreeDNA (at www.ftdna.com) and organised by Maurice Gleeson, a volunteer from ISOGG (International Society of Genetic Genealogy at www.isogg.org). ISOGG volunteers provided free DNA advice and support for members of the public at the conference.

I am a Michael John O’Neill, my Father is Michael John O’Neill, my grandfather was Michael John O’Neill and I’m told his father was Michael John O’Neill. I have no idea how far this tradition goes back but we are from Cork farmers from the Tyrone O’Neill’s.
I have just discovered this project and am gobsmacked at this information.
I alway knew our war cry and knew we were a big bunch, but I had no idea this incredible work was being done.
I will submit a test and see what comes back… anything is fascinating to me.
Thank you Sean, Dwayne and all the other O’Neill’s that have produced this work. ❤

I'm an O'Neill and my father was Edward "Ed" O'Neill (not the same Ed as the contributor named here) I m finding this DNA business fascinating and wished I knew earlier as I'd love to be involved if needed. My father was born in 1919 and I was born in 62. I started looking into the O'Neill clan after finding the coat of arms in my fathers papers which is of the O'Neill clan, the same as the one used in the top right corner on the introduction in this clip.

My great-grandmother was an O'Neill and her line is reputed to descend from the O'Neills of The Fews. I'm hoping to find some O'Neill cousins who are happy to get their Y-Chromosome tested with the Big Y-700 to see if our family legend is true.

Hullo creagh Sept of o'neil here. But Lithuanian grandma's second husband after the Cray was a Fewer. Is there links between the Fewers and the O'Neils of Fews?
      Seems plausible

@@crayrudinyang5598 The family legend was just that we descended from the O'Neills, the "Kings of Ulster". However, without documentation, that's all it was, just a legend. Then last autumn, a 4th Cousin of mine in New Jersey turned up as a strong DNA match to me and my maternal uncle. So, we got her father to do the Y-DNA tests at FTDNA as he still carried the surname and, more importantly, the Y-chromosome. His Big Y-700 test results came in last week and the legend is now a fact. He's R-Z5254. Woohoo!! So, through my ancestor Brian O'Neill (a.k.a. Brian of the Battle of Down), King of Tyrone c.1236-60, I descend from Rory O'Connor, last High King of Ireland, and through Rory I descend from Brian Boru. At the moment, I can't tell if I descend from Hugh/Aodh who started the Fews line or a younger son of Eoghan Mór O'Neill, possibly Art of Armagh, but I'm definitely descended from Eoghan and all the O'Neill kings of Tyrone before him.
I'm afraid I couldn't tell you if Fewer is linked to the Fews line.

I've traced our line directly back to 740 for my genealogy merit badge
Indeed There are handfuls of John's and Arthur's; a few Owens. Even took a sort of variant or Owan as a stage name... Cool wasn't aware of the owen until further digging into the O'Neils of Thomand..
Also wonder if the seed of torcail and tormand of the McLeod have anything to do with Thomand... Seems plausible as the region time and origins speaks...

My maiden name is O'Neill, I still know some of my family in Ireland. We stem from Ui Neil branch of the tree. My Uncle did a family tree when he was young it was huge. Goes back to 960AD. There are at least 6 Simon's in my family. From my Great Grandad, grandad, dad, brother, cousin and a nephew. So if you have a Simon ONeill, the higher the odds we are related.

My great grandfather was Patrick William O'Neill born on 27 June 1871 in Dublin, Ireland. He had a fallout with his family and came to South Africa via ship from Southampton in 1896. Upon arrival, he changed his surname to McCarthy (his mother's surname). He lived in South Africa until his death in 1961. We have no knowledge of his family in Ireland and would love to know more. Very interesting information, my maiden name is Bell, I paid to have my younger Brother James to take the 23 and Me test shortly after our Father James passed. Our Paternal Haplogroup is R1b - R-DF13 S521 R-CTS241.
We do know that our Paternal GGGRANDFATHER, John Bell was born in Clones County Monaghan on Feb. 2, 1841 to a James and Sallie Bell. He was baptized in the Church of Ireland. My Great Aunt, who was our Paternal Grandfather's Sister was very close to her Grandmother Bell, John Bell's widow and my Aunt told me when I was young that her Grandfather John moved back to Scotland when he was about 12 years old. He lived in Paisley there, learned his trade, tailor, joined The Order of Orange at the Loyal Lilly Lodge in Paisley. He worked as a shipboard tailor and made four or five Trans Atlantic trips from Paisley to Philadelphia in order to finally arrive in America as a Free Man. He worked as a tailor in Philadelphia where he met his Wife who was a seamstress, but they moved to Lancaster, PA and he would commute by train to work in Philadelphia. He passed in 1884. They had four children and their second Son John was my Great Grandfather.
My Brother and I have both become members of Clan Bell N.A. My Brother is testing for the Clan Bell DNA Project.
I am certain that we have Basque roots early as my Great Grandfather, my Grandfather and my Father all had dark hair and a swarthy completions and green, hazel, or blue eyes and EVERYONE in my family my Mother included are/were Rh O- blood type, as well as being shorter in stature.
One last item, our Paternal Grandmother's maiden name was McLaughlin and her Mother's maiden name was Harvey. Paternal Great Grandmother's maiden name was McVey and all of us born in America were baptized Presbyterian.

    • @johnoneal1234

Actually, it is the Red Hand of Clan O'Neill. The Brits stole it, just as they stole our land. All Baronets have the Red Hand on their arms, the Baronetcy was created to celebrate conquering us, as a deliberate slap in the face. No Orangeman will ever be Irish if they stay another thousand years.

My great grandfather was named Gene Elliot -Nickname Red Keown .I later studied the Gaelic form is Muiredach Mac Eogain The son of Eogain Mac Néill son descendants of Nial of the Nine Hostages and his son Eóghain (Cenél Eóghain) will be detailed. The Red Hand goes back to Genesis 38:27-30 NKJV Zerah his twin brother was Pherez about 1650 BC but later in the Exodus Mered son of Ezrah son of Ethan son of Zerah marries Bithiah the daughter of the Pharaoh. These were Israelite Pharaohs a dynasty the Egyptians have covered up. 1 Chronicles 4:17-18 NKJV who also was known as Gael of Gaelic history. He was a GAEL or in Hebrew a Gaal-Goel in Hebrew which means a Redeemer. It was of the law Moses the Levite for the Israelites as well as the Jews-Judahites to marry royal cousins and raise up children to their family. Gael is a redeemer. He married the widow wife Abiah-Bithiah of 1 Chronicles 2:21-24,55 NKJV. The Irish Gaelic was so close to Hebrew. We get names like Iriel-Land and Isaiah 29 Hebrew Ariel names like Tara and in Hebrew Torah. I still believe that there were Gaelic Bibles that were burned books and writings when Gaelic was outlawed in the British Isles about 1200 AD. The Declaration of Arbroath in 1320 AD gives references to the Biblical Chronicles! ..

5 And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven. The Y Chromosome is the Marker of the Exilarch of the Line of King David's DNA. Jesus's cousin were ruling the throne of King David since 569 BC in Ireland. 2 Samuel 7 is the truth of this Bloodline King David was the forefather of the Irish because Tamar Teach married High King Iriel Faish in the days of King David of Israel This is parallel until the days of King Zedekiah's daughter who also closes the loop with her marriage to the King of Ireland Oilioll Olchaoin his son Giallchadh mac Oilioll Olchaoin 561- 552 BC I am of the lines of The Clan Mac Keown son of Eogain Mac Neill son of Naill of the nine hostages. Tamar of 2 Samuel 13 was the mother of the House of Ireland; Perhaps the Ariel of Isaiah 29 Iriel in Gaelic is Ariel in Hebrew. Gaal in Hebrew is also Gael in the Gaelic tongue, Torah in Hebrew is also Tara in Gaelic. still means the Law.

Their frustrated imagine the layman. Apparently descended from Nial Confusing because so many are asking for my family dna-23 & me recommendations for Haplotype fromTyrone and says we are Neanderthal - that's startling . How is that determined... and we want you to give your dna then listening to all these presentations for " rare dna subtypes" and the how and such is never explained and murky. I find the science questionable and time consuming in research. Perhaps write in descript what individuals you specifically seek, as these various Halotype presentations contradict eachother ( everyone a different theory ) and are time consuming. And of course no admins. Seen people do many dna tests. Why so quick to give away and so little clarity. I heard of people spending money on many tests to prove what really? When science is not quite ( respectfully) golden age from hours of inconsistencies I've heard from many geneticists. Not aware of O'Neil surname been in NY, US early 1800's.That's my frustration, but respect for being one of the better presentations and love to Trinity wish success.
