Since April my son and I have taken close to 150 coons/possums on three different properties…and we’re still trapping. It’s HOT. It’s sometimes miserable. But when you see 3-4 hens with poults while running traps, it makes it all worth it.
Back when there was a market, I trapped for fur and coonhunted. Trapping and coonhunting is great fun and adventure, but also expensive and a lot of work. Both require a tremendous commitment of time and money. Most people back then would not make the commitment. Nowadays people don’t even want to wear real shoes, just flipflops. I have a wildlife service business doing nuisance trapping and predator management. Most folks will not spend their own money to solve the problem. One potential customer feeds deer chow and corn year round. Most of it feeds the 35 or more raccoons that visit every feeder every night preventing the deer from eating. They run the deer away from the feeders. He provided the videos and photos! I offered to solve the problem for the price of 2 weeks worth of feed - he said no too expensive. Look above at people willing to spend other peoples’ money on bounties and rewards. Turkey hunting must not be that important to them. It is important to me. This year on opening morning I called in some very nice birds and bagged a 25.5# tom.
Good job Nothing but truth here. Everybody that hunts game animals or has deer feeders out needs to own at least 2 coon traps and run them constantly. If you feel bad about "killing something I don't eat " find someone that wants the meat and carry the dressed meat to them. JMHO- I'd rather have game birds and wabbits and small game animals and fawns than predators any day. Everybody that hunts needs to watch this. Thanks for the video
Everyone who thinks they’re cute and feeds them and gets an insane amount of them as result should watch this video. These people have no idea what a disservice they are doing to their neighbours and the environment in general. Also a mention about the horrific disease that these vermin carry. people that feed them in their backyards and identify them as pets have no idea the troubles that they incur. This video tells it the way it is, thanks for posting.
Back in the 70’s there was a big anti-trapping push in Ohio set to go on the ballet. Some how it didn’t make it to the voter after a huge outbreak of rabies hit the Columbus area. Love how Politian’s look after themselves.
Your report is not accurate. I travelled the state of Ohio in opposition to the proposed ban of the leghold (foothold) trap. It did make it onto the November ballot. It was defeated by a 2 to 1 margin.
Since coon hunting has dropped off and fur has diminished in value, I'd like to see some of these states that rake in millions from sportsmen, like where I live in Michigan, implement some kind of modest bounty system for predators and nest raiders. This Spring was the worst for turkey numbers that I can remember in my area, which consists of larger, private tracts in the south central part of the state. And it's not just turkeys...pheasants are almost non-existent, quail have disappeared, and wood ducks get crushed by coons too. I trap 25-30 coons each winter off my land, which is about 200 acres, but it hardly puts a dent in them when the neighbors don't trap any...they simply move back in and reproduce. I would add a surcharge of $5 to every base hunting license sold in this state (I think around 600,000 sold) for predator bounties, and at $5 for a coon or possum, it could really have an impact. Basically every hunter who buys a license would subsidize the removal of one predator or nest raider. Many experience trappers don't even bother anymore, they need some incentive. Nobody is going to skin a coon for a few bucks, but if you could get $5 for a whole one, I think people would get back into it and some significant numbers could be removed.
@@swampwhiteoak1 Great idea...rather than have everyone who benefits chip in a minuscule amount (less than a pack of cigarettes), just go trap your neighbors' properties for free and make everyone's turkey hunting better for them. Charity...it's the American way.
U guys always have good videos, 👍 keep up the good work...4 those raccoons, get some white powdered donuts and you will catch them all...it's illegal here in Florida to use 4 bait, it also attracts black 🐻bears as well, I guess it's the sweetness in it that gets them coming...coyote and coon gone do damage to turkey, there youngs,& eggs ...
Here in the buffalo NY area we have a massive distemper outbreak with coons. It's almost not even worth it to turkey hunt anymore here. I grew up trapping and since the fur market is shot the only people who trap are nuisance trappers. I would definitely link the low turkey population to the predator population rising.
I've been losing a ton of chickens lately, coyote hunting is year round and open season but also raccoons as well. I'm gonna trap some trash pandas as soon as my midway order arrives.
the population around page county iowa got so high we have to date traped 75 ish nest predators racoons and opossium mostly on 4 acrs yes only 4 but our home property contects with ag feilds and timbers along with an abandoned house that the racoons live in.
What time of year?…. Game commission here in Ohio would burn you at the stake if you poached a turkey /deer outta season. But seem to turn a blind eye to fur-barring animals thermal killed, poisoned, killed outta season without a permit. Ultimate act of discrimination. As an active trapper I can speak on this.

Good work!
Amen brothrt
Stick with it, along with habitat work, you’ll see more turkeys in 1-2 Springs, we have!
That's the plan!
I agree. I'm on it. It shows on the number of turkey I get on camera. Only have 2 traps. Every little bit helps.
Thanks for sharing your videos and keep them coming please.
More on the way!
2 years ago I shot 29 in my yard in a two month period. Keep it up!
Great Video,, your making a difference,, keep up the great work,, I think you should be able to trap year round!!!!!
Amen brother. The coon population is insane here in Ohio. The turkey numbers are declining big time.
You ain't kidding.

It is important to me. This year on opening morning I called in some very nice birds and bagged a 25.5# tom.
Trapped about 170ish coons/opossums on my 85 acres and I still see coon tracks everywhere
Yup and the game and fish still can’t figure out why turkey population is down
You are so right and down here we have something else wild pigs ..
I'm from Ohio also and I trap for fur and conservation. Yes they do need to be kept in check.
What do you do with spring furs? Are they worth as much or do you just throw them in the fence row?
nice catches that should really help the turkeys
Just wait until you see and hear the totals from these same traps after weeks of trapping. EYE OPENING!
Suggestions on what to do with that many carcasses?
Throw them in the ditch…
Good job

Quick to spend other peoples’ money.
Spend your own.
Solve the problem yourself. Offer to trap property for others.

Around Ohio they dig up ever turtle egg they find very few snapping turtles hatch.
Are those the pre-treated duke dogproof traps?

I’ve Turkey hunted and trapped all my life. Predators are a issue but to many hunters is the biggest. Keeping it real!
