I've seen all the major paintings of the prodigal son parable, especially those from the Renaissance and the Baroque period. What they get wrong--all of them--is making the prodigal son attractive, muscular, energetic. Look at the Murillo painting--everything is bright and cheery, the son well-fed and in good spirits. Yes, his clothes are tattered, but he looks like just came back from a long backpacking trip, his hair long, his stubble attractive, his legs nicely toned. That is in diametric opposition to Rembrandt, who had the good sense of making the son an actual homeless person, totally destitute. So you can feel the son's total relief, his peace of mind, his happy weeping, that his father has taken him back. The chiaroscuro that Rembrandt uses is also brilliant. This is supposed to be a great moment of close tenderness, not one of open public celebration.
