I enjoy Roberts's version more. BUT, clearly they cannot be compared. Jon is a legend, the composer and this version of NEW JERSEY is not finished in its production.
It's a shame that some of the stuff from the archives wasn't given more credence as this democaptures just a mere glimpse of what could have been. The solo would have been better. Harmonies more dynamic and a more fuller lead vocal from Jon. That being said there is not a chance they would have played it live as it would have killed Jon's voice and transposing down would lose some of the magic imo. The pitch in the 'I know' parts is perfect for the desperation of the lyric
Richie (then not now) was a far better singer than John (this is how his first name is really spelled). This song is better suited for him. Cher’s version is just as abysmal. Kane Roberts knocked it out the stratosphere!
