  • According to the Italian philosopher Giorgio Agamben, ‘thought is the courage of hopelessness’ - an insight especially pertinent for our historical moment when even the most pessimist diagnostics finishes with an uplifting hint at the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel.
The true courage is not to see this mirage, not to imagine an alternative, but to accept the consequences of the fact that there is no discernible alternative: the dream of an alternative is a sign of theoretical cowardice, it functions as a fetish which prevents us to think to the end the deadlock of our predicament. The true courage is to admit that the light at the end of the tunnel is most likely the headlight of another train approaching us from the opposite direction, from ecological threat to a new world war.
Recording of a paper presentation from 15th May 2017 held by Birkbeck Institute for the Humanities at Birkbeck Clore Management Centre, London.

Zizek on top form in this discussion. In the process performing his mass psychotherapy defusing any shreds of ideology in his intelligent and totally engaged audience.

yeah it was frustrating but it did truly help bring everyone into the simplicity of what he's saying. incredible that a person could even debase themselves so much as to hear the name 'Elon Musk' and just go OH YOU SUPPORT HIM.

Re the heckler: expecting Zizek to magically produce a plan that will magically be adopted by sclerotic democratic governments, and magically be embraced by polarized populaces is the height of absurdity.
Zizek is clarifying the challenges, which is something that neither government officials, nor journalists will deign to do.
