First of all Bart what you failed to understand is these old fashioned offenses are designed to put more blockers than you have defenders at the point of attack, this strategy wears defenses down. Just because your reads tell you where the ball is going you still have to fight through multiple blockers and double teams. This old film gives the illusion that the plays are slow to develop but I guarantee you they are not slow. The reason teams have abandoned this style of offense is because it's not as exciting as the spread.
The spread is a variation of the single wing. Officially the "shotgun offense" was a term coined by I believe one of two quarterbacks, John Brodie of the 49ers or Roger Staubach. Before it was coined as "shotgun" it was called the "Short Punt" or "Quick Kick" formation. And with deep passes getting spot foul penalties, coaches will try and take advantage if their quarterback has enough arm strength.
The Spread Offense is a more efficient and flexible offense than the singe wing, wing-t, or flexbone. This doesn’t mean that these offenses are bad or even obsolete. They can still be run in today’s game with great success, and some teams that probably should be running a more traditional offense (Vanderbilt, UNLV, Kansas) choose not to for the reason you stated. But if you have the speed and quarterback skill to the run the spread offense, it will put more stress on a defense than old school systems. For example, Nick Saban never would have converted to a spread he didn’t believe it was the optimal system for his team to run.

I love the look and the 1950's music is great, but this has to be the dumbest offense ever invented. Just have all 11 defenders key the blocking back. He is the offensive back that stands the most upright before the snap of the ball. Just follow him on every play. He will take you to the play and the ball every time.
bartbutkis its not always that simple. My high school ran this offense. And their were times when the opposing team knew we were going to run off tackle. But it didn’t even matter we ran them over anyway. And the blocking back is so close to the line it’s hard to tell sometimes. Plus usually the linebackers are watching what the backs are doing.

If you have a team that knows where the play is going and STILL gets run over, they have no business being on the field. I learned this key from Hudson Houk when I was back in high school. He would later go on to coach in the NFL for 25+ years. An offense has to be able to false-key or show no key to be successful.
@@andrewclarke3044 Reading guards is also "old school". Defenses read different keys according to the offense. You would read opposite wing against Naval Academy and GT. You read guard/near back against a spread/ outside zone team, etc.
Not true at all. There are plays designed to be "key breakers" and when executed it wreaks havoc on defenses conditioned to read the BB. Been doing it for over 10 years.
The play "8 thunder" is the sweep to the outside when the blocking back and the guard pull opposite and the inside tackle pulls play side. Buffalo Gap High School runs this offense and it is one of their most successful plays. Not to mention this offense was created in 1907 and was the most popular until 1950 when the power T era began. That's nearly 50 years of the same offense if it worked then, and continues to work for high schools across the nation then I'm not sure if it is the dumbest ever invented.
