  • I've been keeping the RC390 out of videos looking for the cause but I think it's helpful going through the steps I'm working through to fix the bike... Again.

Just found your channel and subbed up immediately because of an invested interest in your KTM 390 engine saga. Reason being I own a bike with the same engine. So of course I’m quite eager for any prognosis/status/any updates and further work on your 390 engine needed that you find necessary. Sorry for your headache with that bike, but thank you for the content you’ve created around it. Keep up the good work👏

Thanks! I’m leaning towards it being misaligned cooling ports or a crack in the block hopefully not too long before I can clear off enough room on the bench to open it up.

I don’t know if anybody’s mentioned this, but I’ve watched your other video on this subject And another TH-camr had this problem with his Husqvarna 401. He discovered it was what he called “casting issue” where the channels the coolant travels through, doesn’t line up with the gasket and the gasket isn’t capable of actually sealing. A link the video if you’re interested. th-cam.com/video/wspp1DrucC0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=rvXG-A_n54zw7Mze

Yeah he actually hit me up a while ago, I've been putting off dropping the engine again to check that on my bike. It's pretty likely that I have the same issue or the head gasket went again.

Did you ever figure out the source of the problem? I have a friend with his rc390 with the same issues at only 10k miles! Head gasket and water pump seals are good as far as tests confiirm. I have a duke 390 and have had no problems with coolant thankfully. But it sure does love to snack on valve shims! Ive had to reshim every other oil change since new. It will run great sound good, and within 3 to 5k miles its back to clattering and sometimes some power loss. Love these things when theyere running but ill be damed if i go near another one again. More maintenance and repair than a track bike even when its just commuting and joy riding!

I keep kicking this project down the road but, I have to imagine it's either the runout of the water pump shaft is eating seals, maybe it's lifting the head, or cracks in the water jacket. I feel like the pressure test would have ruled out most of the issues. I love the bike when it's running too but I won't be buying another KTM for a while haha

@@GarageAddiction ok gotya! I just subscribed to keep up with you. I hope to hear about a source of the problem one day. I think your onto something with the water pump shaft seal. Replaced the one on my friends and same thing as you happened. Seemed to fix it for a short amount of time then returned. I know the water pump shaft is off of the balance shaft internally, I'm wondering if its subjected to excessive vibration or low quality bearings or the bearing recesses in the case aren't suppoted enough.

      Hello,
I'm facing the same issues it's been months..I tried changing the coolant seals but that didn't work, now I think it's the balancer shaft that needs replacement since I have been running the bike like that with the engine and coolant mixed I might have to change the core and the cylinder too.
It's been dreadful the engine built is so fragile and unreliable.

Curious to see what you find. Got here looking for an alternative way to pressure test my cooling system since none of those test kits fit our bikes and the motion pro is mad $$$. Chuck Harder suggested using a Mightyvac to pressure test through a drilled out m6 drain bolt in my case which it what I’m about to do.
My 500 EXC is basically vaping. Here are the details:
Vaping 500: Chapter 3 - Back in the garage after two months away trying to fix this issue. Lemme know if you have any ideas. Here’s where we are at:
      -2012 500 EXC // 600 HRS
-Top End Rebuilt at 500 HRS
-Noticed bike running hot, loss of power, low coolant, air filter spooging on garage floor - eventually I discovered vapor was being sucked out of valve cover and into air box thus steam cleaning filter (explains spooge, water pooling, low power and coolant loss)
      -Checked oil, not milky
-No smoke/steam coming out of exhaust
      -No bubbles in coolant
-Still, I replaced head gaskets assuming that was the issue since a small piece paper towel got caught between the head and the gasket on my first rebuild.
-Machinist checked head for level and cracks, everything A-OK.
-Replaced water pump seal for good measure
-Put it all back together. Bike felt great. After an hour of highway riding to bring the bike up to temperature I pulled the air filter and saw it was still doing the exact same thing.
-Bike sat for two months with full radiator while I was away. No apparent fluid loss when I checked the level.
-Leak down test on the engine shows 5% loss which I believe is acceptable.
-No bubbles in coolant, no hissing from exhaust or case. The only air I hear escaping is from the intake.
      * My Prognosis *
I suspect there is a very slow coolant leak in the bottom end when the cooling system is under pressure.
      Next step
      Cooling System Pressure Test?
Anything else I should try? I would rather hold off on doing my very first bottom end but if that’s all that’s left then I guess I have to.
Any and all help much appreciated

@chain.driven if it's not loosing coolant and only letting smoke out of the intake/air filter I'd check the pcv and related to see if it's oil vapors your seeing. Is it consuming any noticeable amount of oil?

I have a 2021 Husqvarna Vitpilen 401 with the same motor. I hate this motor. I have the same problem with mine. I am getting ready to change the head gasket here in about two weeks. Please let me know what you find. I intend to do the same as you did repair it confirm it is repaired and then sell it for a Japanese bike. most likely an xsr 700. much lower maintenance intervals and build quality reputation. :( very not happy as i loved the look of my Vitpilen.

I'm definitely not a fan of this engine. I have a video doing the head gasket but I'll definitely keep on this until I solve the issue. Fun bike but a little bit too high maintenance for my Japanese filled garage haha.

I bought ktm duke few weeks ago and so far it has given me 4 problems. I will too, repair it and sell it and buy something Japanese. In my experience, a Chinese made is more reliable than KTM

Well I changed out my head gasket last week. What I found did not make me happy. It looks to me like the coolant ports that pass through the block do not line up with the head gasket. I would say that is why changing your out did not fix the issue. I posted it on my channel if you want to see what I mean. You can skip most of the way through the video until you see me working on the engine on my work bench. I am very not happy with this engine. I wish you the best of luck with yours brother.

I have the same problem as you just recently, check oil and it's fine. Check leaking all the hoses and radiator and found nothing. I am thinking it is the head gasket leaking inside and coolant was burnt there but maybe the leak is too small that coolant not mix with oil yet.
I want to ask if you recommend high compression head gasket from KTM performance or we just go with the OEM.
    Thanks

    • @GarageAddiction
      @GarageAddiction  ปีที่แล้ว +2

Sorry to hear it :( I used the stock head gasket last time. When I pull this apart I might go with the high compression this time and see how it fares. I want to try and narrow down exactly what's going on.

@@GarageAddiction at this point, this leave me no choice but to do a complete rebuild. One of the mechanic I know told me when rebuild to look for the sign of bad engine blocks, especially the paper gasket. He encounters one bike that has bad engine block alignment that leads to coolant burnt.

Sadly not on the aftermarket rad, the oem they fit but honestly the seal wasn't good enough to trust either.
