Who could have thought that there’d be a romantic outdoor eating establishment just outside of the cute indie shop that just had a grand reopening! 😄 For the most important lighting techniques I tend to agree with the video, soft warm lighting - preferably motivated by candles (I’m a sucker for candles). And I’m not saying that bokeh is by definition “romantic”, but by blurring out the background the characters gets placed more into their own bubble 😇 I’m learning so much from these videos! 💡
One month in the future: Aputure proudly presents the first String Light with controllable color temperature, CRI of 95, App controlled :D And yes friends! if you do so send me one 😄
Loved this! I'd say the most important romance lighting technique is to have a suuuuper soft fall of on the face. Ultra-soft sources are key to making the scene feel warmer and more cozy/romantic. Great video as always Valentina/team!
I LOVED THE STEP BY STEP BREAK DOWN OF THE ROMANCE LIGHTING SETUP. The most important romance lighting techniques is lighting for the romantic and flattering mood using diffused soft light while maintaining an awesome cinematic depth by use of practical lights.
Thanks miss, you pass on your knowledge all over the world I am from algeria , and we haven't a school where you can learn the light in cinéma... Thanks so much , and thanks for Aputure ...
I believe that accent lighting such as candles, string lights and light fixtures are the most important! This is because they give you something to set your key and room level to. The fact that the b7c is full RGB with all those FX is a game changer for romance lighting!!
This was my favorite episode, very practice tips that can be replicated. I think the most important lighting technique was the candlelight on the table with the MC RGB.
I think lighting for romance, filters are more important than light color. Tungsten is what we usually think about but the same effect can be done with Daylight. Having the light cut down to something softer (with say a lantern) that wraps its way around the subject usually fits the tone. As well as a promist filter to enhance that warmth/glow of the image.
I feel like the most important element for romantic lighting, apart from the warm softness, is a sense of depth and also mystery that pools of light create. Lots of shadow areas broken up by those pools of soft and warm light. You can do this in small spaces using spotlight attachments/snoots with gels and diffusion.
these videos are always so informative. i think that the most important technique for lighting romantic scenes would be to make sure I don't have light spilling all over the place because i want to keep it intimate and make it seem like the light on the table is whats lighting them. Also, romantic dates are usually at night so i'd want to make sure i don't have SUPER crazy bright image.
I think the most important thing when lighting romantic scenes is a proper feeling of three dimensionality. If we're trying to make the scene feel intimate, we need to feel like the characters are in a world of their own. To me this means the characters should feel away from the background somewhat, that even in a restaurant they feel like they can talk without being overheard, that even if the world is moving around them, their in their own space. Color can really push this forward, if the talent is lit with one temperature, then the background should be a diff temp. / color. Lastly, and this is personal, I like vivid colors. This gives it that push of realism and intimacy that makes a romantic scene feel real yet incredibly special.
For me I think the most important thing when lighting romantic scenes is the practicals where u place on the set and how you place them is very important.
From the selection of lens to the placement of lights in every scene. That’s just so much details and knowledge given. Massive thanks for doing this. It also helps to advocate that there are so many things to consider while shooting a cinematic scene. Kudos for sharing this content.
I think the most important lighting technique in cozy, romantic scenes is really soft non directional lighting. Of course there can be drama, but too much directional lighting can feel lit and make building a lighting framework for the scene harder and less true to the mood.
Again a great tutorial. Maybe you will do one that shows your early work with all the begginer mistakes and than show what would you do differently today? Now, that is a romantic idea!😉
The most important thing in a romantic scene is to convey the emotion to the viewer to feel good, in love with the characters they are watching (or bad if the mood demands it, as long as it’s the way your protagonist feels). You achieve this with the sum of several things conveyed in this video. Usually you wan’t it to be a happy, calm place. Location, set dressing, type of lens and lighting do this. The lens can separate the characters from their world and make them the special atention. With warm lights and soft lighting, you give this feeling of easiness, everything according to plan, soft/slow movements (like shown in this video). You don’t want it to be Avengers all of a sudden, unless the plot demands it haha. The filters aldo gave this dream gloomy feel like everything is perfect. So I think if I had to shrink it to one lighting /camera technique, it would be soft light with soft movements.
I think the most important thing for a romantic scene warm colors and having that warm colors highlight the couples hair. It’s sort of like a dreaming vibe on the couple as if we(as an audience) are part of their moment(s).
Man, I can't believe Girlfriend A would do Girlfriend B dirty like that. What a monster. It was fascinating to watch our erstwhile protagonist turn into an unrecognizable and perhaps even irredeemable villain. A true character arc.
I love how you're watching the tutorial however you are subtly being sold products ( mr. Burns putting his hands together and saying excellent ) but seriously very informative
Great video! Seeing how obstacles come up and the reasoning behind how to tackle them combined with diagrams and technical analysis is so educational! I find that warm, soft lighting that draws the viewer in comfortably makes romantic scenes the most compelling to me visually. Is there be a chance of a video on location and tech scouting in the future? Would love to see some seasoned advice on how to approach a location in terms of its safety and technical needs and how to best suit it for the story and lighting the scene!
I love this video !! never did a romantic scene before so... guess I have to try it out soon. best lighting technique for lighting romance is probably creating soft warm lighting with big diffused light sources is a good start
Well I have to be honest I doubt this is the answer you're looking for but more than lighting I believe the focal length is more important than lighting. This is SUPER RARE. Lighting is usually most important but when you're using a dialogue scene as a building block between the emotional connection between two characters, you want to do the same with your lenses. Essentially, when the "connection" is made, bring the viewer eyes closer to whats most important. In a normal setting, start with a wide, keep everything "open". As the connection is made, go tighter and tighter with your lenses. This brings the eye closer into what the audience should focus on. I dont know if this comes out correctly, thats why im not the writer on set. Anyway I hope it makes sense!
I think most importantly, the scene has to be lit by really soft, almost glowing light in order to make the actors' faces beautiful and gleaming, as if in love. Because the thing about romance is that when you're falling in love your perception of everything changes - it becomes dreamy and everything is more beautiful than before. And your love interest seems perfect, thus the actors faces should be glowing with soft light. I dont care if its warm or cool light, because it depends on the scene and location. Moonlight can be very romantic too for example. But for me, honestly, I would keep the background, especially where there were extras a little bit darker, because that way the couple is more isolated, as if lost in their own world, and that way the audience is more focused on the actor's emotions.
I loved your creativity in crossing the 180 line in tandem with the emotional shift in the scene! If I was lighting for a romantic scene, I like the idea of using an Aputure lantern out of frame for soft key lighting on the characters. I‘d experiment with some rgb lights to accent the background with some pinks or purples and cyans if it could possibly be motivated light.
"The LARGER the source the SOFTER the shadow" is the most important lighting technique/concept when lighting romance. I’m wondering, can I have an Aputure Accent B7c now?! 🤔
I dont know if someone feel like me when watching videos from this channel, because I love the lessons, and I know they use very high quality gear with a huge crew, but I never like the final results, and I cant say what is wrong
I feel the same. I don’t agree with a lot of her cinematography techniques and think she over lights her sets a bit. She also lights really bright- so things tend to get muddy in her image. I would love this DP to take advantage of shadow a lot more than she does. Part of me assumes she over lights to use more aputure products in the video. And don’t get me wrong, I love what aputure is doing with their lights.
You must have placed a back light motivating the string lights in the two shot and reduced the frontal fill. So that it will match well with the close ups.
Soft filters are usually my go to when shooting a romantic scene. If the image/scene is too sharp, it looses that dreamy quality that you want to have in a romantic scene. You can get all the right gels and lights setup, but nailing the atmosphere and the mood with the image I believe is the most important "technique" you can use. You really want to create or strike a feeling in your audience visually.
Brill tricks as always but I would have pushed the wide even warmer. If you compare it to the example shots it almost feels like daylight balanced. It looks behind the scenes cam got it better :) That being said, massive thanks for this. Can't wait for the arrival of the 200x Amaran so I don't need to fill the lantern with tube lights anymore...🤦♂️😁😁 Btw do you have any update on that?
A big aspect in my opinion is proper control of shadows. Raccoon eyes and bad shadows around the eyes kills the mood and conveys like an interrogation.
Softlighting is very good for something like this. But also trying to make it not pop to much out from the background.(If you have enough depht of field)
The lighting techniques that I prefer for romantic scenes is the one provided by candles, only candles like Kubrick in Barry Lyndon. Does Aputure produce candles that you can adjust the intensity of? :)
The problem with watching this channel is theyh use everything possible to make you want to buy as much aperture stuff as possible..... And it kinda works lol
@@aputurelighting if it's a location like car parking, or candle, camp fire or under a moon light we can use just 1 motivated light source & then we can use any aputure light depending on the scene & with bouncing a light too & as we have inbuilt few setting inside aputure for campfire, parking light or moon light which csn give the exact feel & mood as natural as possible, because usually we don't have much time or much budget to setup every location like with so many lights, but we're mostly bound for few closeup shots not much better long wide shots that's the only issue or else we need to go for multiple light with showing some multiple motivated sources. 👍
One could say the most important aspect for romance lighting would be the colour of the light, ie warm. Mind you not really a technique. Then what about moonlight romance which wouldn't be warm? Bokeh and shooting open? That's not really a lighting technique. Soft light? Candles and fire places are staples of romantic settings and aren't soft light sources. Ok so not colour or quality of light what's left? Direction of light. Since most romantic settings are usually at night, creating pocket of lights and controlling the direction and spill of the light is key.
V, fantastic work as always. I learn so much from your videos. However, Inconsistent audio levels and dips seem to be in most of your videos. e.g. this one - from the 1:21 cutaway to a weird 1:57burst then back down at 2min. Just one of many examples. Distracting enough that i have to turn my audio up/down while streaming. Easy fix. You know what to do. I won't mansplain. Thx again.
Soft tungsten lighting is definitely the most popular way to light a romantic scene, and that's how I would've done it. Also, I've always had this vision of a perfect date with a couple on top of a hill and the guy brings out a six pack of carbonated beverage to challenge his date to a burping contest. Am I weird?
Your videos are lovely but it shows too much expensive stuff, the one having this much equipment won't be here learning from TH-cam. Please show something with lower cost so we can play with the scene rather just watching.
I absolutely loved how complete this was. Even if you know a lot, there's always something to learn when you go more in-depth. 10/10

Definitely soft upstage lighting is essential for lighting a romantic scene
Very true!!
So good!
I was ready to ask how you go about setting the white balance for this but you covered it! Very thorough, great vid
fit the mood and set the color temperature to warm color
I edit myself into movies and TV shows with green screen and this video really helped me out on the lighting issues that I was having.

Very inspiring video. I think that this is a kind of a real filmmaker tips rather than youtuber style videos. I appretiate that!
I'm here for the personality
I think a bokeh-licious telephoto or super-telephoto is really important to get the dreamy atmosphere of a romantic scene.
Bokeh-licious ☺️

would you suggest a 300d ii, 300x or nova panel for a first light?
300x. But in the end all are really useful. Maybe nova close second
Nova
Hi, why do you always use the c70 ? any reason ?
We love the Canon color science!

Am I the only one that kinda wishes the end result was warmer and maybe with less string lights? Great breakdown regardless.

You missed something ... We can see face expression shifting before the camera completely went to the other side 😂💔

There wasnt really a reson to cross the 180, considering you never cut back to her to get the payoff of actually jumping the line
