We're building a new U-534 museum and in our sister museum (Western Approaches) we've got a memorial for Canadian forces who served in the Battle Of The Atlantic. Telling Roderick's story would be great since it really shows the cost on both sides.

We have some documentation and a few books about the story, Borden’s story will be included in a new book currently being written by a lady in England. Our hometown airport has been named after him as well as the 155 Borden Gray Air Cadets Squadron.
One of the best, if not the best U-boat restorations and historical displays is the U505 at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, Il. I grew up south of Chicago and have been to the museum dozens of times thru the years and seen it when it was an outside display next to Lake Michigan. Now its all restored and inside a climate controlled building and it is absolutely amazing. I'm looking forward to seeing it again, and again... it will be around a lot longer than I will.
Such an awesome experience. I cannot echo this statement enough. Always what comes to mind whenever I hear about u-boats. You can stand in and walk through a real one!
@@ericb4127 I've been there, they have sections cut out to get a better view. Its probably not ever gonna be sea worthy as you'd have to reforce alot of the structural supports. It'd be cheaper and easier to commission a new one.
Instead of preserving the boat in one piece they went and cut it up into 4 sections in Liverpool. It should never have gone to Liverpool in that case. It was left to rust in Birkenhead Maritime museum. They never had any intentions of preserving it. It should've remained in Denmark.
I was expecting a documentary about raising the Uboat but I was not expecting the people from the sub and the Americans who sunk it to be alive then brought together. What a mixed bag of emotions that must have been for them knowing the old men standing across from them were the people they were fighting. Fantastic documentary, I know a lot of people don’t agree with raising this boat but the documentary itself is amazing!

My grandfather served in the 🇺🇸 Army-Airforce during the War, had many stories that were good and bad but I was always PROUD that he was able to share them because he survived. We all need to be thankful for what THOSE MEN went through and the dedication they gave us to be a free country.....
I live where it is now stored and its such a shame that they have cut it into sections , painted it grey so now it's a pointless attraction for years it was left as found and looked amazing like a real life ghost ship/ sub that you could actually go in. Now it's lost all its history

That is correct, i went on the tour of the boat years ago, i think all the exhibits at the museum were scrapped, including hms bronnington the mine sweeper commanded by prince charles in his navy days. The idea was that it could be welded back together in sections much like the way modern ships are made nowadays, just which someone would transport it back to the u boat pens and do just that.
By sdectioning it, it allowed access to the submarine and its internal workings. i don't like that it was cut up like that, but it does give you a far better view of the inner workings of a U-boat from WWII

Im the owner of a lot of the items recovered from U534 , Ive been buying a fair few thing's in this video ! Im looking at them now ! there in cases in my living room ! been collecting U-boat parts since I was 21 , so strange to see this and then look away from lap-top and there they are in my home ! there all sat next to my most valuable part of my collection ..U47 engine room brass work lamp ! it was damaged after she sank the royal oak and taken ashore to repair , it never got picked up as she had another lamp in the store's , the one I own sat in a box in an engineer's celler untill 2012 when I became the owner ...great video !

Sitting in bed watching this....On my bedside table is an empty wine bottle that was onboard the U534 for it's final voyage. Feels so strange seeing the boat in action with the real artifact right here :)
For me personally, the U-boats are something of a passion. I love history and my family is a reason why I got started in it. My great uncle captained the U-boat 196. He was involved in many Convoy battles. For three and a half years he commended this U-boat. And he was stationed aboard the u-534, so it holds great personal significance to me
Why they had to bastardise U534 by chopping her into three for the U-boat story I'll never know and surely it would have made more sense to restore her so that she could be moored in the same way as the other submarine that was there before.

Yet decades later there you are-- a place no one should ever have visited again and you find yourself in front of your bunk, going through things that used to be yours. A strange world.

So that the disabled could have access inside the hull, they cut it into three separate pieces. I have nothing but admiration for people who are disabled, but destroying an almost unique war artifact was very unfortunate.
They still can't because it ends are covered in plexiglas. Installing video cameras throughout the hull would have been far better than butchering the piece of history like they did.
Because of the advancing war front they were forced to. Still, there is no excuse for cutting this one up like they did. If they weren't going to cosmetically restore it none of what they did makes sense.

My Father was a Dutch engineer in Bergen forced by the German Nazis in 44’45. He told that he sabotaged the Diesel Engines. They ran for about two weeks and than the pistonrings cracked and the engine failed. If that is true we don’t know. What we know is that he fell in love with a young Norwegian girl and he took her back to Holland in june 1945! And I am a son born out of them. I am 57 now and it is time to know the truth about it. How the hell did my dad travelled to Bergen Norway….

@@taylortripp8598 All five crewmen did make it to the surface, but one of them panicked and forgot to exhale at the right time, so his lungs collapsed and he died anyway. The other four survived.
U534 had a crew of 52, 49 survived to be rescued, but three died. Five of U534's crew were trapped in the torpedo room as the boat sank, but they managed to escape through the torpedo loading hatch. a 17 year old radio operator died as he failed to exhale when surfacing. And another two of the five trapped died from exposure in the water.
3:18 notice the Olympic symbol on the U-boat. The captain was a member of Crew 36, meaning he graduated from U-boat commander school in 1936, the year of the Olympic Games in Berlin.

So cool that the German sailors lived and got to see the sub and joke about stuff. Because usually this wasnt the case. Waaay too many men got killed on both sides.
It was good to see both teams move past old views that they both held decades ago to give final respects to all hands lost that day. They'll never know why the boat fired on the liberators. It's irrelevant now anyway. I believe that the Captain of the boat took his life after the capitulation realizing the mistake he made and the lives that it cost needlessly for both sides. He made amends in his own sad and fatal way.
It's not a sub anymore, it's chopped into 5 pieces and they've had some glazing and little porches/awnings. The museum costs more than you used to pay to get a complete guided tour around an intact u-boat! You can thank Merseytravel, they chopped up one of only 4 surviving u-boats in the interest of saving a few pound. It should have been sold to a corporation or museum that had some experience in preserving and maintaining a rare artifact like this... not chop it up due to lack of on-site space then extort the public to see it.

+Ben Sintes: Reminders of the war like this are a very touchy subject in Germany. Less the matter that they lost the war, more the issues surrounding the atrocities committed by the Nazi party. Back in the 'nineties I doubt they would have wanted it, and probably not now 20 years on. (I may be wrong, but don't think so). And yes, Rest in Peace all those who did not make it back.

Advanced german subs used to be made of several parts in different locations, later assembled together in the final place.

It was good to see both teams move past old views that they both held decades ago to give final respects to all hands lost that day. They'll never know why the boat fired on the liberators. It's irrelevant now anyway. I believe that the Captain of the boat took his life after the capitulation realizing the mistake he made and the lives that it cost needlessly for both sides. He made amends in his own sad and fatal way.
This is a rumour that has turned out not to be true. My dad met the Captain years later.
i love salvage and i love to look at the past finding Things from ww2 but many myths from ww2 they were only sailors the big find is yet to come

It's not a sub anymore, it's chopped into 5 pieces and they've had some glazing and little porches/awnings. The museum costs more than you used to pay to get a complete guided tour around an intact u-boat! You can thank Merseytravel, they chopped up one of only 4 surviving u-boats in the interest of saving a few pound.
It should have been sold to a corporation or museum that had some experience in preserving and maintaining a rare artifact like this... not chop it up due to lack of on-site space then extort the public to see it.

I saw the U534 when she was still in 1 peice at the Historic Ship Museum at Birkenhead - sadly didn't get a chance to go on board :(

+Ben Sintes: Reminders of the war like this are a very touchy subject in Germany. Less the matter that they lost the war, more the issues surrounding the atrocities committed by the Nazi party. Back in the 'nineties I doubt they would have wanted it, and probably not now 20 years on. (I may be wrong, but don't think so). And yes, Rest in Peace all those who did not make it back.
Such a shame that people refuse to learn from the fact that War is not the answer.

51:40 Was the war worth it? First Britain and France declared war on Germany for invading Poland, at the end of the war Poland was taken over by Stalin and much of east Europe anyways. Their asking a American if the was worth it. Did they really think Germany was a threat and would cross the Atlantic and D-Day the US coast ? A country with 4 times Germany's war production capacity and twice there population. The States when to war with Germany to get out of the depression that's all.
