I've just finished working through the MCM back catalogue. Firstly I want to say thanks. I've learnt a lot and it's given me such a thirst to get out and do a solo wildcamp myself. You've pretty much shown me how to do all the major elements, what to buy and how to use it. But the main thing is, you did it all in a very straightforward, no nonsense way that kept me informed and entertained throughout. I have now got most of my kit together and am just off now for a bit of recce at a near by regional park to see if I can pick out any good camping spots. But the main thing that I want to thank you for is your honesty. When you were going through harder times, you showed me how getting away from it all and having some time to yourself surrounded by nature can really help the spirit. I have been using walking to do that for some time but I think stepping it up to wild camping over night will give me even more benefit. On another note, the progression on video quality over the history of the channel is incredible. Some of the shots and transitions are stunning and it seems to me that you have a natural eye for the medium. Please keep all the mistakes, alcohol fueled nights and gentle piss taking of The Goat as they are definitely what sets you apart from most of the pack. I'll be watching
Martin, thanks very much for that detailed comment - genuinely touched by that and it means a lot. I've tried to keep things 'real' and honest over the years and although it's a side hobby to my main full time job, I do put a lot of time and effort into the videos and channel. We're not in it for the glory - although I wouldn't say no to a job with Vango or North Face !!! The main thing is to share our passion for nature and the great outdoors and all the benefits that it brings. I've had quite a tough past ten years if I'm honest - but the channel - community, making and editing videos has kept me busy. I'm happiest when Outdoors and I hope this shines through in the videos. I think in this era of screens, the chaotic pace of life and all that comes with it - the benefits of just being out, in nature and the outdoors are immeasurable. I'm very passionate about it and I hope to pass on some of that enjoyment and experience - maybe to those starting out or those unfortunate to not be able to get out for one reason or another. Thanks again for the really kind words - we've been going 5 years in August - that response stands out as one of the best. Thanks again - Chris, Walshy & Matt
You’re absolutely right about the personality thing. I subscribe to MCM because of the content for one, but also because the stuff you say and the way you are I can 100% relate to. Keep up the good work! 👍🍺
I think the point you make Chris about the different channels, different people is valid. I've been (since I found initially Richard Outdoors), following and subscribing to a few of you guys, you've all different personalities and ways of presenting, I enjoy all of the channels and content, keep up the great work!
Hi great vid as per usual..!!!...You are correct that it's the person that keeps you coming back to enjoy the video...As I am retired and health issues make it impossible for me to go Hiking and Camping coming along is second best….Good fun with witty likeable people enjoying the outdoors is what I like. I especially like yourself and Walshy on a camp you feed of each other. Thanks for the filming effort and keep them coming.....Cheers from Inverness.
Cheers Ken - thanks for your kind words, we appreciate it. I'm glad our videos give you a sense of coming along with us! The Walshmeist and I grew up together, so we get on well. That's what it's all about - relaxing and enjoying the outdoors, solo, with mates - just enjoying being out there. Thanks for taking the time to comment - ATB - Chris
A real one with the walshy. The BBQ looked ace!!! As for a 'saturated market' it's the same everywhere...the cream rises to the top because it forces people to innovate if they want to stay ahead of the curve. It's not about being better, it's about being different. Look at your upload history, you've uploaded so many times that now your trying different things to stay fresh and to make it interesting for you to keep doing it. New activitys, new ideas, diversifying the content, more cinematic, better production.
Cheers Mark, I'll keep thinking of new ideas for content mate - always keen to keep it fresh. Got lots of outdoor products to review, so will have to start filming them. I'm gonna make a detailed review of the Anorak No 8 as that gets a lot of interest. Don't seem to be many good UK reviews out there. Thanks for the comment pal. We will be in touch 👍
Your right about the personalities of people but it's also the journey you actually take people on. Your the main influence for me getting ready for my first wild camp in years and I'm so looking forward to it. That's why I watch you guys so I can feel part of your adventures but learn little things that make a difference in wild camping. Now, off to order my dd hammock lol
Thanks Shane and it's great to hear we've given you a nudge to get back out there. Makes it all worthwhile. We hope to provide a few laughs and light hearted entertainment along the way. It's been a great journey so far - and for many more years to come! The DD Frontline is a great hammock - but then again, there are many cheaper options out there and they all do the same job ish. If you need any more detailed advice, drop us an email or come join our FB group. ATB
Cheers Chris - you've done well to put up with us over the years then :-) Thanks for watching and taking time out to comment as always - genuinely appreciated - ATB - Chris
Getting interested in hammock camping and will get some gear for next year. Just going through the back videos to get some tips. You’re right about the personality thing. You get drawn in by someone’s personality. If people stick around, you’re doing something right. Well done.
Chris I enjoy watching your channel and a few other guys camping videos on here. There a lot more interesting than the crap what's on tv these days. Keep them coming mate
brilliant Gear Beer and Hammock camp, and when things don't always run smoothly its not the end of the world. Life isn't perfect and in fact it should be more fun.
I started watching your channel, because of your dry humour and banter. And you got me into those craft beers. Yip that orange IPA from Aldi is one of the best. As for channels. i do watch quite a lot of outdoor ones, but i dont always comment. And i love watching the appalachian trail ones, especially what people take with them, as that has to be the ultimate hike and camp.
Thanks Billy, the plunged orange one is very nice indeed! Appalachian Trail sounds ace - I've read a Bill Bryson book all about that - his bear experience was terrifying - worth a read "A Walk in the Woods" - ATB, Chris
Exactly right mate. I’ve just started my own channel @steelmanoutdoors and I’ve watched you lot many times doing the same thing, but that doesn’t matter. I watch because I enjoy it. The people make the videos, the videos don’t make the people 😃 keep it up. Oh and I’ve got kit envy over your jacket and hat.
Thanks Andy - I'm a right saddo mate - I have no life - I don't watch TV - I just watch TH-cam on the telly and watch others film themselves in the great outdoors!!! The jacket was a bit extravagant but I guess you only live once. Hat was a bargain to be fair - they can be found cheaply! Good luck with your channel pal - remember to ignore the jealous haters and just crack on ! ATB - Chris
MCM Outdoor Show thanks Chris, I’ve watch a good few of your vids. Keep it up lad I enjoy what you do! And I’ll be popping to Lidl to try that orange ale 😍
Great video Chris, one of my favourites to date. The “deep and meaningful thought” session was spot on, watched the same video and had the exact mindset as yourself and Haze Outdoors. Always looking for new tips, tricks, places and kit but it’s got to come with the right personality and crack. It does my head in when I watch something for 20 plus minutes and don’t learn something or have a chuckle or think that’s the sort of person I could get on with. Next time you and “The Goat/ Penguin” or whatever he wants to be that week are up in The Peak District give me a shout, would love to meet up and talk bollocks. Cheers and keep them coming.
Cheers Howard, we're good at talking bollocks mate - it keeps us going. Appreciate the comment - you sure live in a beautiful part of the world! I often wonder what I'm doing talking to myself in the middle of nowhere with a camera - but our TH-cam / Outdoors community is what makes it all worthwhile. Thanks for your comment mate - Chris
Ahhhh....fantastic!! Greetings from America. I stumbled upon your channel while looking for LK70 info (big fan of MilitaryMart, as well) and by the end of the video just knew I had to subscribe. First rate channel with a very personable, and humorous "down-to-earth" manner of presentation (like forgetting the F-ing name of the challenge....priceless!!). I look fwd to catching up on previous MCM vids as well as future ones, Long Live The Penguin! :) P.S. You closed the deal on me making up my mind on the LK70...nice ruck indeed. Will compliment my LK35 nicely. Thanks!
Greetings from the UK 🇬🇧👍 Glad you like the channel and thanks so much for the sub, its appreciated. There is a long back catalogue for you to enjoy! The LK70 is a great pack - the big brother of the 35 as you say. I've only used it a few times and never managed to fill it. Military Mart are a great store and ran by a great bloke. They've just opened a new premises - I'll make them a promotional video soon. ATB - Chris
Chris Still going Mate with the back catalogue and came across this one which I’ve thoroughly enjoyed even with your Featherstick challenge and at one point thinking you were going to start Chanting Grasshopper with your 5 minutes of Deep thoughtful Comments.Me personally it’s Personality that drew me in as well as the Humour which all Geordies love because we are the same yet the biggest percentage of realistic subscribing for me is your Honesty attitude and Genuine Care for the Outdoors you spend your time in.Leave No Trace says it all.Plus Walshy is the ace up your sleeve and just adds that little extra amount of humour that you thrive on which brings out the best of MCM Outdoors.👏👏👏👏👏👍
Great vid. Some folk and or output grab us, some dont. Suppose ill have to try once more to get a taste for IPA! Look forward to Easedale tarn vid, and the oooh we've been there missus comments. Think im winning the battle for all weather outings when she sees it on screen. So keep em coming while its still enjoyable to your good self. Atb.
Thanks Ian! Good luck re the persuasion for all weather! Keep at it 😄 Appreciate the feedback - lots of new and exciting content coming up soon. ATB - Chris
Nice vid Chris as per. Absolutely spot on, what you were saying about Haze's comments. Am a big fan too but, he did leave me feeling a bit disheartened. I'd been thinking about it but, not been able to put it into words. So, kudos to you. It is the personalities. The wildcamping etc. is what we have in common but, it's our take on it, the gear and our take on life that sets each of us apart. Brave doing your first featherstick live too👊🏻 My last woodland camp; I had all my firelighting gizmos with me but, nothing would go. Had to cheat with the gas stove to light the wood stove😅 the joys! Welcome Walshy and his 'cannage'😝
Alright mate. Hazey wasn't being negative, but he raises a good point - why are we all doing it - tonnes of us, filming ourselves in the outdoors! It's quite funny when you think about it. So I've given it a lot of thought too and yeah, it's the personalities which set us all apart and how we all do things. It was Haze outdoors which inspired me to start filming again, I did it when I was much younger but just for myself and didn't upload to YT. I also do it to inspire others and to store our memories for when I'm old (er) and grey! Haha. Thanks for watching pal! ATB - and keep writing your own adventures.
Hi Tony, was a nice camp. I filmed it in 24fps (I had a quick chat with Spielberg and Tarantino who recommended that frame rate) and shot in flat colour profile so I could add a filter in Movie Maker. Thanks for watching mate!
I like watching a range of styles of walking/camping and gear reviews vids on TH-cam.I don't know if you have ever watched a bloke called Steve Wallis but he has novel ways of starting his camp fires.
My understanding is that one pulls the ferro rod back against the steel, rather than push the steel down the ferro rod. It may be that the difficulty in igniting the feather stick was due to the igneous material not being properly thrust into the feathered wood, due to the technique.
Spot on lads!! Nice setups you both had there, I don’t think there’s anything more comfortable to sleep in other than a hammock. Two massive steaks and beer reviews, 5 star camping! Just touching on what you were saying about Haze, yeah I saw that video. You pretty much hit the nail on the head by saying what you think of the saturated market of videos on TH-cam. I certainly sub for the person/person’s. You do get to know that person your watching and see their personality shine through in a matter of a couple of video’s but the main thing is genuine people that’s what I look for in a channel, yours for instance, I know what I’m seeing is 3 down to earth guys who ooze the outdoor lifestyle, bang on lads 👍. Just before I go I couldn’t help but have to mention you forgetting the name feather stick lol that was sooooo funny! Great to see you Walsh’s too mate 👍. Cheers lads, Ant. Edit: sorry I forgot to say thank you for my channel shot out from you, cheers Chris 👍
Alright mate - we're certainly on the same page re the TH-cam situation - it's the personalities that make it. I couldn't believe I forgot the name! My mind went blank !!! I just said it in the previous sentence ...... I must be getting old - I am getting old ! Oh well. Few outtakes on the feather stick lighting attempts mate - ones for the archives I think - I'm not the most patient of people. No worries re the shout out - your channel is going from strength to strength mate - it's great to see! Speak soon and we will get our woodland camp off the ground. ATB mate
MCM Outdoor Show oh boy! I’m with you on the old front, I forget everything all the time. Haha yeah you gotta make an outtake video, keep the mistakes lol. Yeah cool just give us a shout when you’ve got a free night bud 👍 we’ll do a bit of bushcraft and get some of that good food down our necks 🏕
I think we talked about the same thing regarding the amount of channels out there now when we were out and I think you are right, everyone is different and you either like the person or not, so I never get hung up on it to be fair. I have always worn a bandanna, since I was a kid and always wore shades in the slightest bit of sun, other wise I get a headache, so despite being an old git in my mid 60s now, I still will do, not matter how much a tool I look, or whether people like it or not. Typical forecast, being wrong but good to see Mr Walsh brought the sun and I thought I was brave with a bandanna but the penguin hat took some beating mind lol! Got to say the scoff was immense, I love steak and that looked a quality example. Looking forward to the Easedale Tarn wild camp and a full watch and Like from me, cheers Alan
Cheers Alan - always appreciate your comments. Your Bandanna is part of you - it's cool ! Weather was awful in the morning - I have some funny outtakes which are not fit for the public realm! Lots of swearing and frustration going on re trying to light the feather stick. The Walshmeister certainly brought the sun and it was very welcome. Food was ace - cheap and cheerful - Lidl and Aldi ! Stay tuned for Easdale mate - ATB - Chris
Great video. Alot of helpful hammock tips👍 Can't wait to see what you have planned for this year. I'm thinking of having a go at creating my own videos but don't know what editing programs to use! Have you any suggestions? Keep up the good content. Atb jason
Jason, thanks for your question. We have lots of exciting content for 2020 - so be sure to stay tuned and make sure you've hit that notification bell ! In terms of video editing - just keep it simple. Most outdoor videos consist of talking to camera and scenic shots - so it doesn't really need anything fancy - I use iMovie in the MacBook - it's simple - powerful and does all I need. It comes bundled with iPads and iPhones - give it a go. Let us know how you get on - but don't get hung up on thinking you need fancy editing software - you don't - the main thing is if you're starting a channel - focus on getting out and producing content - the rest will follow. ATB - Chris
Nice video. Watched your Hilleberg video and wondering your preferences on tent vs hammock. I get both but grew up with tents and tarps so I'm a little partial to a nice tent. Maybe do a video comparison on your preferences. Thanks
Hi Rory - thanks for your comment and yeah, great suggestion for a video. I'll take that on board. In terms of my preference - I guess it depends on the situation for me. Anything in a forest or woodland, I'll usually take a hammock. They're so versatile in terms of not requiring flat or perfect terrain - so in that regard, they're priceless. However, in the high mountains and moors, tents always take precedence. Hammocks and tarps provide a far greater degree of being 'in touch' with nature - as you're that much more open. Thanks for your question - Chris
@@MCMOutdoors thanks. I have hilleberg soulo and it's great. Thinking for winter pulk camping or snowmobile would be nice to have a Tentipi and live like a king with a nice titanium stove
Hi, it's an 'Anorak No. 8' by Fjallraven - a great bit of gear, lots of alternatives out there too. Took me a while to take the plunge on this one, but I'll get my moneys worth out of it for sure. ATB - Chris
Yes it's about personalities I guess. I get disheartened about making vids, mine don't have much personality so I guess that's why my viewing numbers are low. But I'm not really into branding . I do sometimes think ,why am I doing this but I love filming stuff
Hi Shirley - when I say branding - I don't mean in the conventional sense - but you kind of become your own brand in your video if that makes sense. Hazey provoked a lot of thought in me as to why I was sat filming myself - but as I've said in previous videos, it's as much for our own memories and also to inspire others. I also enjoy the filming and editing process, I find it very relaxing and it fills my free time. Keep up your videos ....... :-)
Brilliantly put Bill. You sound like a man who knows his stuff. I'll subscribe to your channel for more of your reasoned expertise. Oh, wait! "This channel does not have any content"!? Keep up the good work Bill👍🏻

Really like the editing and recording skills,,

Thanks mate, wanted to put a bit more effort into the "cinematography" in this one!
It's a work in progress 😂
Thanks for your comment Dan 👍
Good vid mate! Book of knots! Basic dude stuff! 👍🏼
The book of knots - a modern day classic 🤣 thanks for watching, Chris
couldn't agree more mate, be yourself and enjoy it.
Thanks for watching mate and ATB 👍

I also do it to inspire others and to store our memories for when I'm old (er) and grey! Haha.
Thanks for watching pal!
ATB - and keep writing your own adventures.
@@MCMOutdoors Nice one Chris and thanks for taking the time to write👊🏻
Hi Guys - enjoyed that, good to see you both out - loved the colour grading Chris - Cheers! T 🙂
Hi Pete, I've not watched him - but based on what you've said - I've instantly got impressions of petrol bombs and dynamite! Am I wrong ?
@@MCMOutdoors Not that extreme...... so far. Blow torches and flares so far!!!!!
My understanding is that one pulls the ferro rod back against the steel, rather than push the steel down the ferro rod. It may be that the difficulty in igniting the feather stick was due to the igneous material not being properly thrust into the feathered wood, due to the technique.
Haha! Extremely technical yet accurate response! You're right 👍
Good stuff Chris, good to see you both back out. Not looking good for snow so you gotta take what you can 👍 ATB Phil
Cheers Phil - what a let down this Winter has been !?! Snow - what is that ?
Was nice to get out mate and reset the old stress clock. ATB - Chris
Alot of helpful hammock tips👍
Can't wait to see what you have planned for this year.
What’s the jacket you have on pal
Hi, it's an 'Anorak No. 8' by Fjallraven - a great bit of gear, lots of alternatives out there too. Took me a while to take the plunge on this one, but I'll get my moneys worth out of it for sure. ATB - Chris
Would you recommend the LK70? Have been thinking of getting one over a newer framed pack.
Definitely - it's cavernous - there is nothing it cannot fit in for a camping trip.
@@MCMOutdoors I’d hoped you’d say that. Where is a good place to keep any eye out for one?
Give "Military Mart" a ring here in the UK 👍
@@MCMOutdoors Interesting, their website says out of stock, do you reckon I should still call?
Worst firestick I've ever seen! Blunt knife FFS!. Use the back of your knife on the Ferrocerium rod.
😂😂😂 Brutal! But noted - back of my knife isn't a 90 so it didn't work! Help me get to firestick perfection! What do I need to do?
Brilliantly put Bill. You sound like a man who knows his stuff. I'll subscribe to your channel for more of your reasoned expertise. Oh, wait! "This channel does not have any content"!? Keep up the good work Bill👍🏻
The Cragol lol Cragol, it’s always the case mate
