Movies that should be on this list ----Duel at Diablo with James Gardner,Sidney Poitier ,Dennis Weaver and Bibi Anderson ,---Ulzanas Raid with Burt Lancaster, and --Soldier Blue with Candice Bergen.
That was a great selection , here are a few more "Bugles in the Afternoon" 1952 Ray Milland/Helena Carter/Hugh Marlowe , "A Thunder of Drums" 1961 George Hamilton/Richard Boone/Arthur O`Connell , "A Distant Trumpet" 1964 Troy Donahue/Susan Pleshette/James Gregory , "The Glory Guys" 1965 Tom Tryon /Harve Presnell/James Caan , "Escape From Fort Bravo" 1953 William Holden/Eleanor Parker/John Forsythe , Buffalo Soldiers 1997 Danny Glover/Mykelti Williamson/Carl Lumbly , "The Command" 1954 Guy Madison/Joan Weldon/James Whitmore , "Chuka" 1967 Rod Taylor/John Mills/Ernest Borgnine , "7th Cavalry " 1956 Randolph Scott/Jay C Flippen/Leo Gordon , "Thunder Over the Plains" 1953 Randolph Scott/Lex barker/Fess Parker ,
Great list of movies but you were right in that there are a great number of Cavalry movies. A few that come to mind are 'The Command' and 'The Charge at Feather River' both staring Guy Madison, 'Commanche' starring Dana Andrews, 'Ambush' and 'The Savage Pampas' both starring Robert Taylor. As to 'The Rough Riders' that was the name the media gave to Roosevelts volunteers. Unit was offically know as the 1st US Volunteer Cavalry and was originally commanded by Colonel Leonard Wood who had been awarded the Medal of Honor fighting Apaches in the 1880's.
Ford's trilogy undoubtedly had to be included as they are the ultimate cavalry movies but there are a lot of them as you note. The Horse Soldiers, one of my childhood favorites, is based loosely on a true story, just a trivia note, and includes a fun scene with two great bit part actors, Denver Pyle and Strother Martin.
A couple of comedies: "Hawmps!" and "The Hallelujah Trail". The first is about the little known U.S. Camel Corps, an experiment to see if camels would be better than horse in the U.S. desert Southwest. The second about a wagon train of whiskey, a group of temperance women, Indians, and a U.S. Cavalry colonel who has to maintain the peace among everyone.
Thanks for another great video. As you said, there are so many cavalry westerns, so how about a second part sometime soon? May I suggest Ulzana's Raid, The Battle of Rogue River, and Son of the Morning Star for that one?
This video shows part of the scene from "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" that I only fully understood a few years ago. If you look at John Wayne's chest as he reads the engraving on the watch his men just gave him, you see the Medal of Honor. I must have seen this movie dozens of times before I first noticed it. It adds a lot to Captain Nathan Brittles' backstory.
A good selection of films. John Ford seemed to have an affinity for this kind of story. It's also interesting that so many of these films deal with the Apache rather than any of the other tribes. I'd like to second the recommendation for "Ulzana's Raid"; another possibility in a more comedic vein would be "The Halleluja Trail".
Lots of good films in the list. Yes with so many "Calvary Westerns" it is hard to narrow it down to a dozen or so. "Sir; Never in the history of motion pictures has the United States Calvary ever been late". - Emil Sitka, The Outlaws Is Coming.
Here are my top 3: 1: Two Flags West ( Linda Darnell, Jeff Chandler & Joseph Cotton). 2: Escape From Fort Bravo ( William Holden, Eleanor Parker & John Forsyth). 3: Column South ( Audie Murphy).
A good list and an entertaining video though some of the ten films selected are a little shaky however I am in total agreement with the inclusion of "40 Guns to Apache Pass" It's one of my very favourites as it is so bad it is actually brilliant as for the Ford films all are beyond criticism though Ford was not that great at action in his films I always found his style lazy. Yet Ford painted the American West as a romantic painter might have done and always used music to maximum effect as in "The Horse Soldiers" my pick as best from the list!🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂
I have a sub-section in my Western Category dedicated to Cavalry vs. Indians. My Western Category goes; John Wayne Pre Civil War to Civil War Post Civil War Cavalry vs. Indians TV and Collections Cavalry vs Indians numbers 45. Note, the John Wayne movies are in the John Wayne section.
What about tv shows? There was Branded, Custer and... F Troop, one of my childhood favourites. There were, according to wikipedia, 30 films about Custer or with him as a minor character. I would add Major Dundee to this list.
All Ford Trilogy Major Dundee Little Big Horn Seventh Cavalry Cheyenne Autumn Ulzanas Raid Hallelujah Trail Guns of Fort Petticoat Under Two Flags Geronimo
Here's a fun note about Cheyenne Autumn. According to the late author Tony Hillerman, the extras for the movie were local Navajos, who spoke Navajo in their scenes. Apparently they talked smack about the white cast and crew, and when the movie was shown in theaters in the Four Corners region, Navajos in the audience kept cracking up at all the wrong parts of the film!
Charlton Heston got fed up with director being abusive to many in cast and crew and moved against him with a cavalry saber... On the other hand, when the studio threatened to fire Sam... Heston said that if they kept the director til the end of the film, they could have Heston's salary... They greedily took him up on the offer... YP
Great starting list! I would recommend Little Big Man as well. Although it deals with material not always related to the Cavalry, the Cavalry plays a major role in the movie. Interestingly, the parts of the Indians were in the main played by American Indians. When not, they were played by Asians, the ancestors of the American Indians.
@@famouspeople63 For the roles I was considering, Aimee Eccles (Sunshine) was born in Hong Kong, and Cal Bellini (Younger Bear) in Singapore. Chief Dan George is North American Indian (born in North Vancouver, Canada) to the Squamish tribe. I haven't been able to dig up any tribal information on Robert Little Star, so if anyone has any details I'd love to hear them!

I remember an old History Channel show hosted by John Agar. It brought up all the things historically wrong in the movies.
