Their goalie at the time was fucking amazing too, Ricardo was his name? He was playing soooo good that world cup especially on penalties and free kicks. But I felt italy had even more talent spread across the board. Think about it. Cannavaro, buffon, zambrotta, grosso, gattusso, materazzi, Totti, Luca Toni, del piero, pirlo, inzaghi, iaquinta, gilardino.. even the half Argentinian they brought in as a sub every game was playing at a super elite level. The star power and depth of Italy was one of the best if not the best in that entire tournament.

I think the 'rough patch' has been and gone, ie not qualifying for the last World Cup. That 2006 team was full of genuine all-time greats such as Buffon, Cannavaro, Pirlo, Totti, Del Piero etc and I would've been surprised if they hadn't have won anything in that era. Currently, the national team have a crop of decent young players coming through and just qualified for the European Championships with a 100% record and should be expected to make a decent challenge for the trophy.
