Trangia gas burner VS noname gas burner

  • Testing different burners into Trangia cooking set. The main reason for this test is to see the difference of the burners when using the gas canister upside-down. This can be helpful in specially cold conditions 🥶
    Edit: The no-name burner is most likely a GoSystem burner.

    there are 2 different versions of the primus burner for trangias, the one in this video has what i call the vertical valve because the valve knob is vertical when the canister is upright. the vertical valve burners don't work properly with the canister inverted. the other version is what i call the flat valve, the valve stem is inline with the fuel hose and the valve has a 360-degree swivel connection to the hose. the flat valve version works properly with an inverted canister. i have 2 flat valve burners and 1 vertical valve burner and even though both burner designs look the same, i have no idea why one works with the canister inverted and the other one doesn't.

Have put the whole lot into deep freeze no change worked fine. Slow until pipe heated up then away it went. 4 season mix is the best I have found for winter use. Hope this helps.

    This is an interesting review. I will check out the original one anyway, because it can always happen that you get a "Monday piece" = a piece from a bad batch which is not representative of the overall product performance. Moreover, I don't like buying products directly through Alibaba or similar from China, because they kind of come with no warranty, .i.e. one that you can't really make use of (high shipping costs, no return management, basically trouble - tried that in the past and it was not worth it to me). I also don't have a need for a perfectly even flame at a high flow. Don't use a high flow most of the time and prefer to use the alcohol stove and just have gas as a backup (or the other way around, let's see how mine will perform...). This was still helpful to me though and interesting to see. Now I know that the points made aren't really any trouble for my use case. Too bad you don't have more videos. Gear reviews are gold on TH-cam! I hate making them but they really are ;-D

    • @johanstran2433
      @johanstran2433  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      liquidvic turning it upside down will increase the performance in colder conditions. Butane has higher evaporate temp than propane so you end up burning all the propane and not the butane if it is cold enough. The butane/propane mixture can separate. This does not happen when burning upside down/liguid form and you will get greater performance/efficiency from the canister.

      @@johanstran2433 how reliable do you believe the Omnilite Ti to be in general but particularly if you needed to burn unleaded gasoline (rather than ‘white gas’)? When it come to burning vehicle fuels I just have a hard time believing anything but the MSR stoves like Whisperlite, Dragonfly and XGK would be any length of time reliably? And even then from memory on MSR’s warranty statement they only guarantee the XGK to burn unleaded. Berniedawg commented that is because it is the only stove that reaches sufficient heat to also burn the additives in unleaded gasoline. But at least the Whisperlite and Dragonfly also have the cleaning rod in the fuel hose to scrape out the black hardened residue that builds up burning dirty fuels, even the Optimus Polaris would need a hose replacement if that happened 🤔

    If it’s too cold for the gas vapor to start burning in the first place how do you get the tube to heat up so liquid can be vaporized? 🤔 wouldn’t a bit of alcohol be needed to prime it? But there isn’t a dish under it like in the multifuel stoves like Optimus Polaris and Whisperlite universal, both burn canisters upright and inverted plus liquid fuels too, there is a trangia adapter for the Optimus Nova which is their dedicated liquid fuel stove but I wonder if the Polaris fits in it?
    The British Marines chose the Optimus Polaris as their official stove, I have seen a vid of a guy who just takes the ‘legs/pot supports’ off the Polaris and just places the burner bell on the ground in the trangia stove center hole but not sure how stable/safe that would be?
    But the Polaris gives options of canister upright/inverted, white gas, kerosene (if primed with something more volatile), gasoline (unleaded but only if desperate as it burns dirty and can clog the stove with hard black deposits)

    • @johanstran2433
      @johanstran2433  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In the gas canisters you have a mix of propane and butane. The propane have a lower boiling point than butane so the propane will burn enough in the beginning to pre-heat the burner. In cold temperatures the propane will burn first because the butane isn’t converting to gas and therefore ending up with very low efficiency when the propane is empty. If you holding the canister up side down the two gas mixes is in liquid form and is therefore mixed, so you burning equal of both.
      Polaris is a good all rounder, but I prefer a stove that have dedicated nozzles to each mediums. Mainly because this gets the cleanest burn and the lowest Carbon monoxide production. Important if you’re using the stove in the tent. I am using the primus omnilite, happy with this one.
      I have seen an adapter to both nova and Polaris to trangia somewhere but can’t remember where. Maybe on the trangia webpage or some other dealers, so many possibilities 👍🏻

    • @impermanenthuman8427
      @impermanenthuman8427 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johanstran2433ah yea that makes sense! thanks for the education 👍🏻 so can you use an adapter in the trangia with the Omnilite Ti?
      I’m a complete beginner with backpacking/camping stoves but I have a leaning towards prepping/survival too, so I ended up with both a Whisperlite Universal and an Optimus Polaris due to their reliability and ability to burn a diversity of fuels well, I also bought a Soto Windmaster for summer hikes when keeping weight down is critical and just planning to only boil rather than ‘cook’
      If I had to have chosen just one stove it would have been the Omnilite Ti, it is quite light compared to most multifuel stoves, and I would trust it to burn canister gas or pure white gas reliably and cleanly, but IF I needed to burn gasoline or anything dirty they are harder to maintain and clog up badly for extended use in a ‘grid-down’ scenario where I would need to take it apart to clean it regularly and risk losing little parts etc
      As well as working in a Trangia does it also burn canister fuel inverted? I like the idea of burning fuel inverted because then you can use cheap pure Butane once primed somehow?
      Thanks again

    • @johanstran2433
      @johanstran2433  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@impermanenthuman8427 Yes I have seen some people use omnilite in trangia, not sure if they’re using the nova adapter or the trangia multi fuel adapter but I am sure you can make something fit.
      Some nice stoves you got yourself there! I use canister gas and white gas on mine, burns nicely. Important so get known with your burner and have some spares/cleaning equip with you on your trips. Touché if some bad fuel or something ruins the trip.
      As long as the temperature is above cooking point on the butane it’s possible, needs to be above to create enough pressure in the canister. You also must keep in mind the cooling effect gas creates when it’s vaporizing inside the canister. Maybe you have seen/felt this? You often can see condensation on the outside of the canister. Burning upside down helps with this problem. I have not tested pure butane but in warm climate this shouldn’t be a huge issue, maybe some lower heat output.
