    Hearing Vincent Price mutter, "YES!" after Rick Baker thanks for the Academy making the category made me smile. A man of horror and cinema who knows how essential make up artists are to the genre, and to filmmaking.

    The werewolf make-up isn’t the only reason why “An American Werewolf in London” won the first Academy Award for Best Make-up and Hairstyling. The make-up work on Griffin Dune during his appearances to David as an undead zombie and his different stages of decay he appears in are also another benefactor as well to “Werewolf in London’s” win as well.

    I get a tear in my eye watching this. I saw Life Magazine in 1980, featuring Rick's work on AWIL, and I literally knew at that second that I would become a professional and do the type of work that I saw on those pages. It's been over 35 years that I've been working professionally, and it's all thanks to Rick Baker!

      Vincent Price, Peter Cushing, and Christopher Lee all three should have gotten an award. The first ever "Trinity" award because let's face it- rarely has a trio of friends influenced a genre such as these three did the horror genre.

    I remember seeing Kim in NY just before she went out to present this. She was so excited. She felt the exposure would be good. I disagree about the dress. I think Kim (nearly 60 at the time) looks sensational in what would be her sole appearance as an Oscar presenter. Her and Vincent Price together exude a certain classiness that is sorely missed from the more recent Oscars. Let's hope someone changes that....

    • @LS-ti1rz
      @LS-ti1rz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Unfortunately the era of the "Golden Age" of Hollywood is long gone. There was a period of genuine class. Where actors didn't feel the need to have their personal views on matters heard, they understood to do so would be to alienate a huge portion of your fan base. Those classic musicals like Singing in the Rain, All the musicals with Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, great actors like Humphrey Bogart Lauren Bacall, Betty Davis, I can go on and on. I know they weren't perfect yet they exuded class and they demonstrated what it is to the personification of the word. Today's actors . sorely use some guidance from the era. Yet alas I doubt it very much. We have actors using award shows as platforms to take cheap shots at the President of the USA and the sad thing is the excutives of these shows allow them to be aired.

    What a great choice as the first winner of the category. The transformation scene is shocking to this day. But the whole team should have gotten a statue. The visual effects combined with creature work made that scene what it is. And Landis's staging is terrifying. Having the werewolf look into the camera during this scene is one of the scariest things I've ever seen.

  • @generalyellor2187

    You would have thought that the arguably greatest achievement in movie make up, Planet of the Apes, would have been part of the montage, especially with Kim Hunter as presenter. And I'm also surprised Baker didn't mention its makeup's creator, John Chambers, as whenever Baker is interviewed he almost always mentions how it was Chambers' work that predominantly inspired him to become a SFX makeup artist in the biz.

    • @nonplayerzealot4
      @nonplayerzealot4 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      AWIL was a movie worth being mentioned. Howling 1 was low budget. So much so that it impacted the amount of makeup FX they could actually accomplish. They had to resort to cartoon images and Harryhausen style models after the big transform scene. Baker had more gravitas at that point than Rob Bottin, too. They weren't gonna replace AWIL with Howling if AWIL didn't exist. They would've chosen something else or waited til next year. The thing they regretted was not having the category the year before so they could give credit to the work done on John Hurt in The Elephant Man.
