That keyboardist knows what he is doing.
Don Airey, hell of a player. Now in Deep Purple as a full member and not session / touring finally!
Martin Bare sure ripped that guitar.
Awesome riff
Killer. His phrasing is like no other!!!
I saw the Crest Of A Knave tour in Salt Lake City and Fairport Convention warmed up and David Pegg Tull's bassist at the time was in both bands.
I saw the show at the LA Forum. Don Airey and Doane Perry did Apogee together and nailed it!!
Great song..!!!😮👏👏
Fantastic! Ian Anderson is the greatest rock composer, showman, and performer of all time. There'll never be another like him.

@@STEFANO-jp2yq You have your ignorant opinion. I have my accurate one. There is no other rock musician who matches IA for originality, creativity, stage presence, musicianship, musical and lyrical composition, and the length of time he has been producing top-class music. Name one, if you can.
@@STEFANO-jp2yqno exaggeration.
Love this, this is when they beat Metallica and Janes Addiction for the best heavy metal/Hard rock award at the Grammys. Brilliant✌️
@Michael Rowe lol
Yesssss, well said metallica wasn't ready for such moment. They were still overgrown children & much has n't changed shamefully! Besides this was long overdue far as living in the past album not pissing on their albums before this.
Wich was just really stupid. I love jethro tull, but this is neither "heavy", nor metal. Maybe, at most, hard rock.
@@leone.6190 well the award was the best Hard Rock/Metal Performance
You cannot compare their Songwriting. Metallica were still kids, Jethro Tull has Proben for years how good they are and why they got the award.
Retired "Steel Monkey" here myself. Local #44 Cincinnati
Respect!
Now I know why they beat Metallica...this song rocks!
Awsome classic tune
Jethro tull is a musical genious
Is the fantastic Jethro Tull ; masterpiece !! 👏🏻🤘🏻👌🏻
Never gets old.
Ashra Tempel . yes its zz top + dire straits. don airy is on keaboard . i saw them live in germany, 87.
I liked this Jethro goes discopop goes zz-top sound they tried the Late 80ties....in all theyve written music history
Despite this being playback. On the 1987 'Crest on a Knave' tour, when Don Airey played keys, he actually played the keyboards for this Live. Martin Allcock and Andre Giddins who performed this song in 1988-91 and in 1999, didn't.Well they played keys of course and did so fine, but the keyboard/synth-chord for this song, was just a backing track in 1988-91 and 99. Ladies and Gentlemen.... DON AIREY!!!
And as Anderson played all the keys on Crest of a Knave probably it is originally a sequenced part
Well...it's half true. Don was controlling the sequencer live on-stage (he'd re-programmed Ian's original studio part, into his own gear). If you watch the footage from Maple Leaf Gardens in 1987, you can see Don in the left-handed corner, walking around his rig, whilst the sequencer is active.
WOW !!! Never saw this before ! Excelente !!!
Never gets old
THAT HAT IS FUCKING AWESOME.
I loooooove this man💓
Another one of my favorites from Tull. Reminds me a lot of Dire Straits.
it reminds also a little bit of claudio simonetti of goblin
Yes when Crest came out I was shocked that they sounded like the DS's! Eww!
Dire Straits? I don’t hear it. But I guess you could say DS sounds like Tull. 😮
As usual, superb guitar sound from Barre. Such an "average Joe", but blazes with the best.
the guitar arrangements on this song are beyond awesome
Sir, Martin Barre aint no Average Joe, just an underrated guitarist
Agreed. Plus it is a great song with great vocals from Mr Anderson.

😛😛😛😛😛😛😛
@@h.a.s.palliblister8113the dude can play. My favorite rock/prog/ and more guitarist.
Martin Barr rips it up N tears it down.
Ian is playing an electric guitar. Never seen him do that before.
the terrific keyboard intro is being "played" here, rather than sequenced... sure a steel tempo player
Cudo.
Magnifecent sir Anderson and C
Ian Anderson would have made a great court jester.
"Think I sit down and invent some fool, some Grand Court Jester..."(from the song Back Door Angel")
@@biserkasertic1208Minstrel in the Gallery!
Dearest, Darling Ian, please let me know where I might obtain a hat like you wear in this video. For that matter, I’d love a copy of hat from Dun Ringhill. Please advise?
The zz top era of Jethro Tull.
Barre was channeling his inner Gibbons
That's still the biggest bunch of crap I've ever heard. It sounds nothing like ZZ Top. That's Martin's innovative guitar playing all the way. I know you heard that at the time and jumped all over it. You're an impressionable guy, Matthew.
It seems odd seeing Ian "playing" an electric guitar, but I remember he did on the MTV video too. Maybe he actually played electric on the album. I need to look that up.
***** You're right, I have some videos from 1988 ( Mountain View and Roswell I think) where he plays electric guitar on a few songs, maybe upload them soon
Have you listened to Ian's 1983 solo album ('Walk Into Light')? He did all the guitars on that (Fender and Schecter guitars and a Wal bass), and even did a little solo on the intro to 'Made in England'!
Grande Ian Anderson,lo vi las tre veces que vino al Peru.
Programmed drums and Ian [awkwardly] wielding an electric; good song but bad juju! Heard this for the first time while eating a pie and having a 10.30am beer after work in the Croydon pub. Bought the album later that week.
Good memories. I prefer the 'Rock Island' album over this, when it comes to 80s "hardrock" Tull though. This track', 'Farm on the Freeway', 'Jump Start', 'Said She Was A Dancer' and of course 'Budapest' are excellent standout songs and classics IMO.
@@SilverTounge85 It's pitty they didn't included "Part of the machine".
@@SilverTounge85Really like Rock Island too. Crest of a knave as well. I thought they should have won the Grammy 3 years in a row.
Jethro Straits
or
Dire Tull
It's influenced (or at least inspired) by their labelmates Ultravox, that combination of synth backing and guitar rock was their invention (check "Dancing with tears in my eyes" or better "All stood still" by them). JT were among many that had their "Eureka" moment upon hearing them.
btw , this is the album beating metallica . ultimate trolling before it was cool
Nice!
Song is about Ironworkers am one Local 396 St.Louis,Mo Hog🐷
Totally lipsynced. No performer does a song exactly from the album. Even see where Martin Barre would use the whammy bar but doesn't in this at the 2 minute mark.
The late 80s were a strange time for Tull...
I like all their stuff.
bad ass song on great system ! like Makie PA system with sub !
non capisci un cazzo
I'm here trying to find out when Martin started sporting that silly goatee. Evidently not in 87. Although i barely recognized him in this video. I guess the goatee is not his first highly questionable image choice
He lost a huge amount of weight in the late '80s and ended up looking like a different person. I believe this was even remarked upon by Ian Anderson on stage.
He turned marathon runner a few years prior .
Did Ian speed up his vocals or is that to avoid copyright infringement?
ZZTull? Fantastic!
This song was made of Ian himself. played all the instruments and singing. Still one of my favourites but its not a real "Tull-song". Its a little bit funny to see the band doing it in a German popshow.
Nothing personal, mats, but you're wrong. All that great guitar playing is Martin Barre.
Anyone out there remember Cats Squirrel!
Lip sync but still great.
Sad to see Tull syncing. No guitar chords (wires). This is the studio version. Hey uselessjoe, there is no flute in this song!
In those years playbacks during tv shows were the routine
Most people were using wireless systems by the late 80s, so there'd have been no 'wires' even if they were actually playing live.
Awww theyed stwool bwest medel gwoop fwom mettalica. Helllll yyyeaaa tull rocks.
Cattivi pensieriiiiiiiii!!!!!
Where's the flute....
Tull will surprise you, even if they have to go synth-pop and drop the flute for a song.
Lip sync?
It doesn't matter what decade it currently is, Ian will always dress like a member of the IRA
Or at a Renaissance festival..
He's actually wearing a Tam O'Shanter cap with the Anderson clan badge attached. The Tam was commonly worn in the Highlands of Scotland, particularly in the 1700s. There's nothing remotely IRA about Ian's dress.
@@stevestruthers6180 Bro, sometimes u just have to take hyperbole as sarcasm…
So the guy in the beret I suppose he's Jethro Tull 😆
Is Ian playing a tele? Weird.
Ian actually owned one! A three pickup, all Rosewood (I think?) Tele made by (I think?) Schecter. You see it in his home studio in the 1986 Fish, Sheep and Rock 'n Roll documentary, as well as photos and videos of the 1987 Crest of a Knave tour, where he played it on this track!
no dai....i Jethro Tull in playback non si possono vedere....😂😂😉😉😂😂
And..........they lip synced
it's lip-synced.
it's not live.
lol xd
Awfully clearly playback
lol playback...
It's no secret, puts it in the info
Well sure, it's obvious... lol but awkward though
Oh God, horrifying.
The music? You must be joking or deaf then I guess
@@Schizosepsis Trust me when I tell you that Ian and Martin were just as horrified getting up there ape-ing (fake playing/lip synching) their own song. The song is great. Actually the whole album, Crest of a Knave, is great.
No, European television circa 1987...
This is lip synched. Not played live as it is the exact studio version.
