Rob, you did a fabulous public service by organizing and posting these performances. My local Shakespeare Society and San Diego excepted my suggestion that our group read Troilus and Cressida in November and December. We meet one night each month. I have actually read it a couple of times before spread out over three years. I am reviewing before Tuesday night as I’m actually assigned as an organizer and want to be able to give a kind of framework for people to examine the play with. I definitely want to emphasize the sense of satire, but also keep out any sense of farce. It’s not a Play that has a very good reputation, but it certainly seems to me. There are so many apt observations on human frailty and life in general. I have a resistance to condemning Cressida for her quick turnaround.
This is my first time fully exploring the text, and... is Troilus the first one to say that "Helen blah blah face blah blah thousand ships" nonsense? He really is an a**hole. EVEN IF HELEN WENT WILLINGLY, SHE DID NOT LAUNCH A SINGLE SHIP (if we recall, Agamemnon killing his daughter had a lot to do with that part of it), but anyway. I can rant about ancient Greek misogyny all day.
