    24 fps was selected because initially when movies were recorded on Camera film rolls, the rolls were very expensive. They found the lowest frames they could go for the film without being jittery was 24fps. This was just to save cost and not for any "feels".

    Please don’t mind but I read somewhere long ago that the establishment of the 24 frames per second (fps) standard in early cinema was a result of a careful balance between practicality and viewer experience. During that time, film reels were indeed expensive, prompting filmmakers to find an optimal frame rate that could minimize costs without causing discomfort to the audience. While they experimented with a lower frame rate like 15 fps, it was found to be visually jarring and headache-inducing for viewers. Ultimately, settling on 24 fps struck a harmonious chord: it reduced expenses while providing a smoother, more pleasing visual experience that didn't strain viewers' eyes. This delicate equilibrium between cost-effectiveness and audience comfort solidified 24 fps as the standard frame rate for motion pictures. And 24 fps also made introduction to sound in movies.

    motion blur from camera's shutter speed makes 24 fps smooth.
    24 fps from phone camera looks choppy because phones crank up shutter speed to control exposure.
    Thats where ND filter comes in play

  • @AmanArora7
    @AmanArora7 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Many movies are also distributed at 30,48&60 fps, examples : Gemini Man, Life of Pi, few scenes in doctor strange multiverse of madness were at 30 fps.
    24 is a very old standard used from the film times so directors and viewers are used to watch it in that frame rate. And also the projectors were made to show 24fps.
    But because TVs ran on AC current so 25fps and 30fps is used for 50hz and 60hz power supple. But slowly mostly TV/Displays started running on DC so they were made to refresh at 60/90/120hz so 30,60 fps are more suitable for it.

      Movie frames convey more information per frame, due to motion blur. Just from this one frame, you can probably figure out what is happening in terms of motion: In contrast, frames in a video game are often “static”, they have no motion blur.... It's available but at higher frame rate 🎫 (generally)

    For those who do not know, the other main reason is SOUND.
    When Sound got integrated into film, also known as 'Married Print' it needed a definite space at which it sounds Natural. And at 24fps, Voice sounded Natural without any change in Pitch.
    There you have it.

    Movies look good because of motion blur even at 24 fps
    I think there might be some other reasons for choosing low frame rates include easy for editing, better quality in low light, takes less memory.
    But video games feel choppy due to individual frames(no motion blur) so, atleast around 60fps is required to feel the smoothness

  • @priyanshuchauhan645

Imagine recording 60fps or 120fps 8k and then editing that 🤣. Even high budget cinemas worry about storage issues cus even 4k videos takes up lot of storage , 8k or 12k footage takes few hundred tera bytes for each movie .

    The main reason is that animators, CGI artists have to edit each images and add special effects one by one. And one image could even take hours to make, also rendering work. That's the main thing.

    Btw our persistence of vision is 1/16th of a second which means that 16 fps will also feel like a movie but won't be as smooth for sure

    I thought movies where shoot at 24 fps because of heavy editing ie if more frames more to edit and more mistakes.

    Aur eyes 👀 sees the world at 24fps but, does the world work at 24 fps?NO. It doesn't matter if the fps is more than 24 our eyes will see it at 24fps only. Also, adding more fps will make the videos look more real(better). In film 🎥 they use 24fps because it reduces the work while editing and adding VFX.

    I almost read all the comments here and it was pretty sad to see that people still don't have much idea about the technical aspects of film/tv. Films are mostly made in 24fps because back in the 1920s, the theatres used a rolling machine which were capable of rolling the 24 strip film and thats how it became standard between theatre chains and Production/Distribution firms. Where what you see on Indian TV, they are 25 fps. The reason for that is Fields, Scanlines and the electricty flowing in our homes(50hz). US uses NTSC which is 29.97 fps since they use 60hz of elec. Its not possible explain over here but you can search by the given above terms. Also, 90hz, 120hz don't mean jackshit to our naked eyes. Thats just a marketing gimmick. I'm a professional Editor with more than 10 years of experience and have worked on Films, TV, and a huge number of documentaries/web projects. I am now a Visual Matketing Editor working in the U.S., just in case you wanted to know about me.

    There is another reason of using 24 fps is that when higher fps used. The cgi vfx used in the movie feels fake

  • @PrinSanity

    Another reason is easy to edit. If movie shot in 60fps then movie is hard to edit, if editor editing frame by frame then he need so much time to edit. But in 24 ( PAL ) fps it's ease.

  • @rohanlohiya9774
    @rohanlohiya9774 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Also another reason is that 24 fps is easier to edit rather than 60 fps... I mean it is easy to edit a picture 24 times a second rather than 60

    Also, a budget for a movie depends on how many frames it has. So, a movie like interstellar has a lot of CGI where each frame took 100s of hours to construct which are scientifically accurate. Producing more frames will cost more money, thus 24 fps is perfect.
