    Thank you for the info ,I notice now that I trying to repair some tube radios it's the capicators, that seem to go bad and sometimes a resister .but I just want to have a supplier of vacuum tubes when I need them ,in my phone ,so I can just order what I need a place to buy from ,a dependable company or web site,some old tube radio stuff are hard to find .

    EICO sold tons of kits. I have a signal tracer I like made by EICO. I use a Triplett 3444 with several adapters, and a break out box. The 3444 used true book numbers and test voltages not the "Dynamic:" Gmohs numbers & goofy Ep value like Hickocks. Drug store testers had 40 or more sockets to avoid having to do all the settings. It made things easier for consumers trying to save a buck or two and not kill themselves or the machine. My Eico tracer has a small built in OT in it!

    Well done sir, you are a true Elmer. I just picked up a mint 666 for $30 and was a bit intimidated to fiddle(*i had an old drug store RCA tester which was easy to use). agian thanks for the tips and walk-though

    I had adapted a Tektronix 371 curve tracer with an AC Hi Pot transformer used on long high voltage cable run testing to it for testing 6KV X-mitting tubes. When the semicon makers moved over seas we had to sell it. Now I have a circa 1967 Tektronix 576 I am converting. We owed $20,000 on the 371. Now we are using a 45 year old machine, with older parts to make it do tubes. I will miss the 371 a lot. This mid 60s stuff was well made, but no IEEE 4888 at all! All I can get is 400 volts not 6KV.

    Thanks for posting! Great information! Just got one from a garage sale today. Would you sell a copy of the manual? Thanks!

      You can find copies of the manual for download on the Internet. See, for example,

    I no this is a old video,but I did want to ask you a question or anyone who see this ,where is a good place to buy tubes ,I have four old tube radios ,two that are working ,one I am almost done repairing
    ,and one that needs to be recapped.so I may need to buy spare tube or need to buy replacement tubes in case any are bad.

      There are a number of companies that sell tubes in the Internet, as well as sellers on eBay. I would wait and see if any of the tubes are bad - unless they are physically broken it is surprising how rarely tubes in old radios are bad.

    So for some reason I have always adjusted the line adjust when I have a tube inserted already. Should I not do this?

    • @jefftranter
      @jefftranter  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, that should work fine.

      I think it changes the readings and definitely when testing for shorts since there is more sag on the line. Like if you test a KT88 and you adjust the line before inserting the tube, after inserting the tube you will notice the line adjust is a lot less than than before.

      Leif Larson Yes, it is important to adjust it after inserting the tube due to line sag. Whether you adjust it both before and after, or only after inserting the tube, should not really matter.

    Good grief. Set the settings BEFORE you put the tube in the socket! Do you think a 6.3V tube is going to like the 70V you had on the filament of the previous tube? Same goes for the selector switches.
