    This is really great! Can you help me understand how the head turns back and forth?

    • @HALLOWEENHOWTObySaulFilms
      @HALLOWEENHOWTObySaulFilms  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for asking Bobbijean. The head movment is an unintended "happy accident" at the coupling located where the push-pull rod exits from the top of the perch and joins right under the raven's tail. The push-pull connector moves the Raven's connector up and down but also causes a slight rotation when doing so. This in-turn causes the head to rotate.

    • @HALLOWEENHOWTObySaulFilms
      @HALLOWEENHOWTObySaulFilms  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Wayne, appreciate the comment. The head movement is a somewhat random result determined in how the connection between the screw eye and the terminal loop interact.

    Do the corkscrew style matter - the inclosed cog type real hard to find

    • @HALLOWEENHOWTObySaulFilms
      @HALLOWEENHOWTObySaulFilms  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Brad, thanks for asking. Yes it does matter and probably the most impotant thing is the enclosed or concealed cog type. These types help to ensure that nothing will get stuck in the cogs stoping the wing movement. Products change all the time and it looks like these two: Oneida Barware Wing Corkscrew & Home Hero Wine Opener both have the enclosed cog type. Just be careful since those brands might have more than one design and those models may have the exposed cogs. I hope that helps.

    Very well done. As I watched the intro I was impressed by the complex motions the raven made and I couldn't imagine how your were going to pull this one off... By far the most complex build on this channel. I like the solution you came up with, excellent idea I would have never thought about a wine corkscrew remover! You make it clear how to make this mechanism... Compare that to my method: It is a struggle to figure out how to make mechanisms do compound actions such as rise up, raise arms, and lunge forward, that takes the majority of time on my builds... the lighting, sound effects, programming, and control are easy parts for me, but since they are worked on last, I'm actually programming the prop (Arduino) a few hours before Halloween night! Talk about pressure!

    • @HALLOWEENHOWTObySaulFilms
      @HALLOWEENHOWTObySaulFilms  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Ray. I hope all goes well for you on Halloween ... I can fully understand the pressure that you are under. I so appreciate your comment on how complex the motions of the raven initially looked. I liken it to a magic trick, you scratch your head trying to figure out how it is done and then when you find out you are amazed at how simple it all is.

    • @raymitchell9736
      @raymitchell9736 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HALLOWEENHOWTObySaulFilms : You are so right about that. The work that goes into figuring it out in the first place is the hard part, then you take it a step further and create a tutorial on it. Besides my background in electronics/embedded systems, I've also been in education for 10 years as an adjunct professor at CSU, Hayward (East Bay) Computer Science and Multimedia program; so I know the challenges about prepping and putting together instructional content. Again, I applaud your work... It is amazing and you do both the design/engineering and instruction parts very well.

    I know this is a complex prop and an already long video, but I think it may help to add a few more moments of “why we do this part” - some seem obvious, but I think we’d benefit from the reasoning before you show the finished product.

    • @HALLOWEENHOWTObySaulFilms
      @HALLOWEENHOWTObySaulFilms  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks Kerri for your constructive criticism. I agree with you, it is a conscious decision at times in order to keep the video moving. I will be more aware of it in future videos, however much like following someone's cooking recipe, it is while in the "process of doing" that you realize why they did it a certain way.

    • @KerriGilpin
      @KerriGilpin 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have to add that I LOVE THESE VIDEOS! I agree that MOST Of it makes common sense as you go, and you explain the process really well, but maybe in the initial drawing of the 3 separate sections- when you mention that the bird is animated by the push/pull rod, you could add a bit about the motor and the corkscrew, or at the end, show the motor moving the bird without the cover on... similar to the way you did the tea pot... just some thoughts! Overall I think your videos are so great, and super helpful!

    Hi - Having issues with black light paint smearing /not sticking to perch - did you spray prime the whole thing first?

    • @HALLOWEENHOWTObySaulFilms
      @HALLOWEENHOWTObySaulFilms  ปีที่แล้ว

      Black light paints come in a varriety of qualities and are not always easy to work with. I did not prime the perch because it was already white. A white under color can help keep the black light paint colors vivid. Depending on the black light paint that you use, a flat white primer/sealer might be helpful. I always paint the entire subject with two coats of my black light base color, then once thoroughly dry, I add the highlight color (on raised areas) and the shadow color (on the recessed). I hope that is helpful Brad.

    • @HALLOWEENHOWTObySaulFilms
      @HALLOWEENHOWTObySaulFilms  ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you so much for this detailed tutorial. so well done. I have attempted, but my raven doesn't move as freely as yours does and the ring terminal actually detaches from the wire on my version. I am using the exact Sunbeam corkscrew and I bought the Target raven. only difference I think could be that the electrical wire I have seems more stiff than what you used, but I wouldn't think that would be the culprit. Maybe some paint got stuck in the corkscrew mechanism when I painted it black, but it moves freely if I pull the wire down with pliers, but not if I pull using my hand. wondering if you had any suggestions for me. Love Love Love the prop.

    • @HALLOWEENHOWTObySaulFilms
      @HALLOWEENHOWTObySaulFilms  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi odiebenny. I am sorry that your raven is not working as it should. I know that others have built it with good results. The fact that the ring terminal detaches might indicate that something is not moving freely (corkscrew perhaps?) and too much stress is being put on that connection. I know how frustrating it can be to try and pinpoint the problem. It may come down to trial and error with trying some slightly different materials and double checking that all connection points are moving freely without an obstruction of some kind, somewhere along the way.

    Can you share paint colors used on perch for black light.

    • @HALLOWEENHOWTObySaulFilms
      @HALLOWEENHOWTObySaulFilms  ปีที่แล้ว

      Choose a red paint and a green paint, or yellow paint and purple paint, or blue paint and orange paint. Typically complimentary colors when mixed will create brown... pigments and proportions will be different from paint brand to brand. Once you have the base color that you like save out two portions of it and mix yellow with one, for the lighter highlight and typically the darker cool color (blue, purple, green but sometimes a deep red) for the darker shadow or lowlight color. I hope that helps.

      @@4602118 The color combo for brown works also for black light paints (proportions will vary). The highlight color (lighter than the base color) is for the raised portions. Yellow will typically lighten the base color.
