I had this weapon in hand during my period of military conscription. Back then, conscription was still in effect in France, and you could ask for serving in the police instead of going to the army during your service time. If you were chosen to serve as auxiliary conscript policeman, you would receive this weapon as standard dotation. It was different from the weapon used by professional policemen (back then they used Manurhin MR73 revolvers). From what I remember from my time of service, the Unique RR51 was a very accurate gun with low recoil and required basic maintenance.
Thank you for your comment. This is great information, nice to get some first hand knowledge of these in use. I did get this running and it is a very soft shooting gun. You can watch the repair video here. th-cam.com/video/F72TthUk_bw/w-d-xo.html Thanks for Watching.
Putting this pistol back together can be trickier than meets the eye. I spent forever trying to get the barrel back into place. After many failed attempts, I consulted a gunsmith who even struggled a bit himself. One must put more force in shoving the barrel back into place on its lugs than one would think. It is a cool pistol indeed and one rarely talked about it. Thank you for making this video!
I love showing an old gun as it was purchased flaws and all. It gives buyers interested in old stuff an idea of what they may find when they shoot it. Thanks for not fixing it and giving the impression that every purchase comes home without any problems.
Unique was a French nation company, but as noted, the design of the pistol is much the same as the Spanish 'Ruby' (type) arms. One sees - by checking maps of the area - that the Unique factory was located in the city of Endaye or Hendaye, France. Located in the Pyrenees Mountain range which runs along the border between Spain and France. One notes this is - ignoring national claims - essentially Basque territory and explains the similarity to 'Ruby' pistols. The company - Unique - was founded by Mr. José Uria. One notes the safety lever on the left side of the pistol above the trigger (more or less). Does that not scream 'Ruby'? The inner workings and design are very reminiscent as well. The pistols usually have a better finish than the WW1 pistols from Spain as they were made after WW1 and not in quite the hurry as the wartime pistols. I must confess to not having one in my collection. I do have several of the Spanish pistols from the era. I'm still looking. My pedantic spirit is moved. The word 'coups' on the slide is pronounced (at least in French) as 'coo'. It means 'blow' in the sense of hit or strike. So the "9 coups" on the slide indicates the nine round capacity of the magazine. The word 'court' ('coor' pronounced) on the slide is 'short', meaning 7.65mm Short. (Similar to the Spanish 'cort' or corto' or German 'kurz'.) I really didn't know collecting old firearms would make me a linguist.
Mine doesn't have an external hammer, mines an internal hammer and the sights are not windage adjustable. I couldn't find a lot of info on it either. Did however find a spare mag...for 60 bucks cough cough. But let's just keep that between you and me. Lol.
I've heard that many guns chambered in 7.65 have the type of cycling issue you experienced. Of course 7.65 is essentially .32 ACP, but old 7.65 is hotter. You either need a weaker spring or hotter ammo for more reliable function.
Thanks for watching, The issue with this one is someone tried to modify the trigger bar to remove the take up. The new trigger bar is to long and it is not reseting on its own, just have not had the time to pull it out and file it correctly.
So I thought 7.65 ammo was exactly the same as .32 ACP. I thought merely the nomenclature was different. I take it from your comment departed402 that 7.65 and .32 are very close, but not the exact same round. Is my deduction correct?
Does anyone know where replacement parts can be purchased for this model. I was recently gifted this model & the recoil spring seems worn & in need of replacement. Thanks!
you may need to bring to a vintage gunsmith and see if he can make or fit one. measure the one in it and see if another one fits or can be modified, like a ruby pistol or another pistol of this type. I'm sure something can be found to work. Thanks for watching.
