    Thanks Ted, bang on the money, I have a specific problem with a Volvo MD2010 that has been standing for 11 years and when started wants to run away every time and needs to have the air intake blocked to stop it. I’ve asked a number of marine engineers what the problem is and they have said stuck governor so this video has filled in the missing info to allow me to remove the timing case and investigate. Excellent and thanks again.

    Ted, great video...thanks so much for sharing this info. I realize this is 2yrs old at this point, but I have a question for you.
    I read through all the comments to see if anyone else asked my question, I don't see anything similar.
    I'm working on a problem on a boat I'm purchasing. It's a Yanmar 4JHE in an old 40' sailboat. The problem is that under load RPMs are 1700 below where they should be (engine is rated for 3600 WOT, we got 1900 during the sea trial). We thought it might be a problem with the prop pitch (feathering Maxprop), so I checked the pitch on the prop and it was wrong...but not wrong enough to account for the RPM difference. We corrected the prop and got another 300 RPMs or so, but still well below where the engine should be (now at 2200 with properly pitched prop, but should get to 3600 WOT). With no load, the engine actually revs a bit above where it should (we hit 3900).
    Question- you mentioned several times in this video how the forces work against each other in a 'no load' situation with the governor. Is there a separate mechanism or adjustment for 'under load' governing? I know in some trucks, there is a governor to limit speed...so shifting up through the gears you get full RPM, but when you hit 65mph the governor kicks in and no matter how far you put the petal to the floor, no more fuel. That is how this boat is behaving, as if there is a governor limiting the under load RPMs.
    The current owner of the boat is an elderly man, and he recalls he may have asked a prior shop to 'set a governor' when he started letting his grandchildren use the boat. This actually makes sense because there is no telltale sign of over fueling when the engine won't come up to appropriate RPM. In fact, when we get to 2200 and then give more throttle there is no change of any kind (no smoke, no sound difference, it's as if the cable moves but the engine doesn't get the signal to increase RPMs). We considered a fuel delivery problem, but I would think that would show other symptoms (without a load, hesitation, fluctuation, etc.)
    Any ideas?

    • @tedsmarinerepair8956
      @tedsmarinerepair8956  ปีที่แล้ว

      The fuel injection pump may have had an adjustment done to limit the fuel delivery but not something I would suspect a dealer would be willing to do.
      With the engine off move the throttle to full and then go remove it from the pump to see there is more movement you can get out of the pump (cable issue if so).
      Also if it is starving for fuel it will act just like a limited throttle range. try running it on a external fuel tank like a 5 gallon diesel jug to see if it make power.

    Thanks for sharing this video. I have a VP 2010 with a new injection pump fitted last year. Winterised the engine and have been getting it ready for the new season. I have lifted the pump off because I have no throttle movement at the pump and the engine will only idle. The external throttle lever is free and I have spring resistance from the large spring. I get movement from the fuel stop lever at th4 pump.. Before I remove the engine from the boat, can you think of anything obvious I am missing?
    Many thanks in advance of any help you can offer.

    Hi, I hope it's okay to ask you this question because I can't seem to find any information about faulty governors online. We installed a completely overhauled volvo penta md11c in our sailboat, and although it's running it won't react well to the throttle. When increasing throttle, it will take a while for it to get up to speed. Sometimes, when under load, the RPM's won't increase at all until we press the cold start button, then it will respond to the throttle pretty well. After returning to idle, and increasing throttle, it will not increase RPM's, or will get up to speed very slowly.
    The mechanic who did the overhaul says that it's because the engine needs some time to run before the governor will function properly. Something about the weights getting stuck and needing some time to settle. Could that be true? We've ran the engine for 3 hours now, changing speeds every minute or so, but not much has changed. I hope you can give some advice or peace of mind or advice!

      I'm not exactly sure what your asking . However, if it is a diesel engine and it's losing rpm when a load is applied, use an amp clamp to determine if the load is greater than the gen set capacity. If the load is not excessive it is likely a fuel delivery problem.

Now after watching your video I have a better understanding of how they work and their principles. Can you answer some queries I have, Please?. I intend to run the SR2 at around 1000 to 1200 rpm under load(approx 78nm). How would I achieve this?. By turning the throttle lever screw out, to hold it at the desired RPM?. Or would I need to get special governor weights to achieve this correctly?. Many Thanks, Leon. :-)

      If it is a variable speed engine (propulsion or a variable speed generator) you can set the rpm where you want via throttle linkage. If it is a true one speed generator 1800 or 3600 rpm) then you may have trouble getting it to run at that speed without modifications.

      @CMF917 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok, the deutz engines don’t have one pump but rather individual pumps per injector that run off a cam shaft. I’m a little confused how the throttle and governor work with a system like this. I guess I’ll pull everything apart

    • @tedsmarinerepair8956
      @tedsmarinerepair8956  ปีที่แล้ว

      @CMF917 on one end of the engine will be the governor assy. Likely in the front where the gear drive is. There will be a control rod that connects all the pump fuel levers together. That rod connects to the governor and throttle lever. I would start at where the throttle cable attaches to the engine. The governor may have a broken return spring. An exploded parts diagram will help.
