He took a break & started pounding this out on the drums, & we got 2 songs instead of just one. I always imagine what it would be like to be front row, hands on the stage, or even in the middle of the packed crowd. Concerts in the 70's were a lot different than today. No cellphones, it was more communal and for the experience to be there and enjoy the music.

Yah, this is the Zeppelin equivalent of a "fluff" song. No deep musical statement, just a standard head-bang simple party tune. It's just fun and meant to be fun without too much examination.

The wuss (jokingly) drummer I was in a cover band with in the early 80's refused to open with this song. Said he needed to be really warmed up before playing it because Bonzo was so difficult to copy. Fair enough, whenever he did get around to playing it later in the night he always kicked a$$! This one's one of my favorite Zeppelin songs. Fast and rocks hard. I got to see Page and Plant when I was 19 years old on their No Quarter tour in '95 and was soooo hoping they would play it but they didn't. Bummer. Glad I got to see them though.

I know you two like the 70s era of rock--as do I--but just keep in mind that rock has had a lot of eras and styles. The 90s were a true golden age that rivaled the 70s. (Having grown up with 70s rock, I feel rather ashamed to admit it, but the 90s may have been the best decade of rock ever.) The songs were even more hard hitting and powerful. Some of the best songs ever came out of the 90s. If you plan to start out with the older stuff first, that's a great idea and I would encourage you to do so with the intention of moving through the eras. But if you happen just to not be aware of what's out there, thought I would mention it.
A couple of suggestions for you. Trampled Under Foot live for “sensory overload “ in a good way or The Lemon Song for a great bass line. Any song is great!

OK. I'm a huge Led Zeppelin fan and (in my opinion) the best version of "Kashmir" is their live version from the 2007 Celebration Day concert in London's O2 Arena. I believe this is the last time the boys played together as Led Zeppelin. Of course, the drummer was Jason Bonham, who filled in for his late father John. Except for Jason, the guys were advanced in age, but they still rocked it big time. I love this version of "Kashmir" and it is a MUST for every Led Zeppelin fan to watch. Unlike many of these live performances, that stays fairly true to the studio version. And the reason is, obviously, because you don't want to kick off a show with a long meandering piece. It also demonstrates just how much variety they could draw on when putting together a set-list.

Among my circle it's rock and roll and hats off to Roy Harper, the two least amazing Zeppelin songs. OK. I'm a huge Led Zeppelin fan and (in my opinion) the best version of "Kashmir" is their live version from the 2007 Celebration Day concert in London's O2 Arena. I believe this is the last time the boys played together as Led Zeppelin. Of course, the drummer was Jason Bonham, who filled in for his late father John. Except for Jason, the guys were advanced in age, but they still rocked it big time. I love this version of "Kashmir" and it is a MUST for every Led Zeppelin fan to watch. Unlike many of these live performances, that stays fairly true to the studio version. And the reason is, obviously, because you don't want to kick off a show with a long meandering piece. It also demonstrates just how much variety they could draw on when putting together a set-list.

You should really listen to the studio versions of these songs first. Led Zeppelin in the studio were masters.
Dang! RP changed the melody to a lower register! I can see why - singing the original melody night after night on tour would potentially make you lose your voice. But I sure prefer the higher melody. Way less exciting version here.

Elie, if you want real “rock and roll” you need to go back in time a bit from 1970….back to the late 50’s and early 60’s. Listen to Chuck Berry, Lil’ Richard, Elvis, The Big Bopper etc.
Volume is low. When listening to Zep it should be so loud your ears almost bleed.

That's funny that she said this is her least favorite of what she's heard, among Zeppelin fans that's a pretty typical attitude. Among my circle it's rock and roll and hats off to Roy Harper, the two least amazing Zeppelin songs. To be clear they don't have a bad song, but if you're going to rank them this is pretty simply down near the bottom.
