    Slip stich, also known as half single crochet, although it's usually done in one movement, pulling yarn through both stitches at once. I love your rugs, Erin ... they're beautiful!

    I made rag rugs in the late 70's when country was the fad. I really like handcrafted items and they never go out of "style". Thanks for the refresher course.
    My mother always used a gallon glass pickle jar to hold either her yarn or rag strip balls. It's deep enough to place on the floor next to yr chair. I tried bowls and find my material would sometimes 'jump' out of the bowl and roll off the table.

    I have been knitting for about 10 years, but am a new crocheter. In fact, the rag rug I'm making is my very first crochet project. I've been watching some of your videos to learn how to make rag rugs. Learning from books, I thought I was doing it wrong, turns out I was making a slip stitch! Ha ha! I'm so glad I decided to watch this video! Thanks again.

      That is funny. This rug using a slip stitch is a very difficult rug to make because the slip stitch is a very easy stitich to do however a very difficult stitch to keep flat. It does not really progress along well. Try watching my Oval Rag Rug for Beginners 101 and see what you think. Thanks for sharing. I hope the rag rug you are making is going well.

    Your doing a slip stitch. I love all your rugs. I haven't made one yet, but I hope to work on it soon. I personally think the slip stitch may be good to secure this rug for the first round (which I plan to do). Then I'd like to experiment with the half double crochet. What you are doing is called a half stitch. It is a slip stitch when you connect two things or just move a few stitches. My grandmother taught me to crochet in the 1940's. The half stitch is sturdier and heavier than a single crochet and will last longer and it makes a warmer garment.

      +Lesley Allerby Thanks for viewing Lesley! I only use sheets. I almost never use the whole sheet on one rug because I change colors often. I would allow 3 to 4 queen sheets for an average rug. I hope that helps you plan your rug. Have a great weekend.

    Love your videos! I just took a class on making rag rugs and then found your tutorials on TH-cam. They have been very helpful. Looking closely at this video, it looks like you are putting your hook through the top loop to start your heirloom stitch. Is that correct? I have tried putting under both loops and then through the top loop. Using the top loop has definitely been easier.

    • @RagRugsbyErin
      @RagRugsbyErin  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I believe that is what I did. The key is being consistent with each rug. Even if you do something different than me many times it will be lovely as long as you do the same thing throughout that rug. Hope that helps.

    Everyone can buy old sheets at thrift stores! I have bought complete sets never used for twin bed size. Now I am not sure if I want to rip them all up. So if anyone else is like me be careful. Look for the used sheets. There should be more of a variety. I may give the twin size sheets to my grandson. 💞 ☺️

    Hi Erin : D
    I have fabric on the way to make my first rag rug ever - I especially like the Appalachian Heirloom design and want to try it first....with Van Gogh fabric! Thank you for all your helpful videos! In some of the close-ups of the sheet yarn, it looks like you have zig-zagged the raw edges to keep them from unraveling...this is something I was considering since the rugs in one of my how-to books has "stringy" frayed edges and yours have a much prettier look. Do you recommend zig-zagging?
    Lisa F.

    • @RagRugsbyErin
      @RagRugsbyErin  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lisa, I do not zig-zag the raw edges on my rug. Mine have frayed edges as well. If you use good quality used sheet with a minimum 50% cotton the usually fray a minimum amount. I perfer 100 % cotton or percale sheets. I worry about your first rug being made with fabric and not sheets. Remember they are rag rugs and they will be your creation and with your hands. That will make them lovely. I would wash and dry the fabric several times before making a rug. Also the Appalachian rug is a bit challenging. Make sure you add enough extra stitch in the corners. Have fun and enjoy yourself. :-)

    • @boogasmomlf
      @boogasmomlf 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the advice : D I also have some stretchier fabric, will practice with that on one of the easier patterns and get comfortable with the crocheting stitches before moving on to the Appalachian Rug.

    Good Morning Erin , i really like that rug but i have a hard time trying to do it ! When it time to add some stich in the corner strangely my stich (when i have to put 3 stich in the same hole ) my stich is transforming to a chain stich ! I watch your video over and over and i cant see what i am doing wrong ........ dont have problem like that with the other stich
    Thank you

    • @RagRugsbyErin
      @RagRugsbyErin  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Suzanne, Sorry you are feeling frustrated with this rug. This was a challenging rug for me as well, but not for the same reasons. I do not advocate you putting 3 stitches in 1 hole. Only 2 and if you feel you need to do 2 in next hole as well if neccessary.

      +Erin Halvorsen. The tooth brush rugs are the same thing you are making. Crafters made their own large crochet hooks by whittling the end of a toothbrush handle into a hook shape. If necessity is the mother of invention then frugality is it's father

    Erin, I am really off the wall curious about the multiple half/slip/heirloom stitches in the first end and subsequent turning areas. When you do this kind of stitch with yarn, you can see that there is no part of the stitch that goes around the stitch you are going into. You end up with a chain of stitches that more or less follow the loop they are supposed to be in. How is it that you can do it with material? Or is it just stiff enough that you can't really see the non-connection? I am collecting material to start a rug and would like to clear this part up before i begin. Thanks! And thanks for the great videos!!!

    • @RagRugsbyErin
      @RagRugsbyErin  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for writing. I am unsure of actually what you are asking. You need to add extra stitches as you go around the corner or arches in order to allow for the arch. This rug I found more challenging because of the type of stitch and it does not give. I do not recommend this as a first rag rug. This is a dense rug due to the type of stitch. I hope that answers at least some of your question. Have a wonderful day.

  • @rajulkanji5

    can we make the rag rugs with regular material that is also a question

    • @RagRugsbyErin
      @RagRugsbyErin  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Rajul Kanji Sheet yarn made from sheets or t-shirt yarn made from t-shirts would be best. If you use new material from the store it will not wash or wear as good as recycling sheets.

  • @stacilk7607

    What would I need to do differently if I want to make a large one? Do I just keep adding and increasing the corners? I am wanting to make one for baby nursery. I have a lot of old sheets and I don't like the cost or smell of new store bought rugs!

    • @RagRugsbyErin

    • @RagRugsbyErin
      @RagRugsbyErin  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Wildflower I get my sheet from many places. Some are given to me. I buy the rest from yard sales, but most come from thrift stores. The are all used except once in a while I buy one at a thrift store that was never used. They get at least one heave duty wash if not two. I do not buy anything that is questionable. It actually is quite fun looking for them.

    Hi there. I’m doing a rug and as I’m working it curls up on the edges. Will that change or should. Be adding more stitches as I go? Not sure if I should unravel a bit or keep going...advice?

    • @RagRugsbyErin

      You will need to take out the part of the rug that is cupping up. You have not added enough extra stitches. This rug requires more extra stitches than the basic oval because this slip stitch has no give. Here is a video I made on adding extra stitches even though it is on the basic oval rag rug it will give you the idea of how to add extra stitches. th-cam.com/video/xVNfJrU_S6I/w-d-xo.html I have over 100 videos many addressing different situations that you might encounter in rag rug making. I hope that helps.

I am going to be putting together a video presentations of other viewers work to inspire others. I would include your name (first or first and last name) and a general location where you live. You can decide whatever is best for you. Thanks.

    Erin, maybe if you make the very last row with a single crochet stitch it would lay flat and be a reversible rug.

      +Sally Behrens That is a great idea. Or maybe the last 2 rows. Thank you so much. I will try that.

      When I was little I remember my grandmother used to make these rugs and sell them. I also remember she made a kind of different, more prominent stitch around the edge to make it lie flat.
      Love your videos!

    That unknown stitch is known as a simple slip-stitch.

      +Gwyn Meade Thank you. I do know that now. I noted that in my video, but all the notes I add to my videos can only be seen on the computer. Have a good weekend.

      Your videos are well done. I will try the braided rug one of these days. I teach the Toothbrush rug at my LQS. Love making those.

      +Erin Halvorsen Toothbrush is SO easy. Some great videos on here for those. I have done two this month, takes about 5 hours total work for an oval about 2.5 by 3.5 ft.
