My great Grandmother is from America Samoa and my great grandfather was from Western samoa. As my great grandmother passed our culture passed with her. I'm trying to learn as much as I can about our people. I'm in AZ and I'm trying my hardest to speak Samoan. By blood, I'm the 1st great grand daughter.
Oh my life, I now know how my niece received her name of Salamasina in Tonga. Never thought the stories were true that we had Samoan roots also. Shows how integrated Polynesian countries are.
@Catalina fy: It's also quite possible that your niece is named after the Salamasina in Tongan mythology. Also known as Alamāhina, she's the Tongan Goddess of Rain. But then again, she could be named after the Sāmoan Warrior Goddess.
Your niece isn’t named after the Tafa’ifa Salamasina. HRH Princess Royal Salote Mafile’o Pilolevu eldest daughter is the only person in Tonga named after SALAMASINA. The reason being is in her lies the link between Samoa and the Tu’iTonga line through her great great grandmother Queen Lavinia Veiongo the grand daughter of the last Tu’iTonga Laufilitonga, then Tu’iTonga line was abolished. The current ruling line Tu’ikanokupolu is also of Samoan decent through the first Tu’ikanokupolu-Ngata his mother was Samoan-Tohu’ia. So the name was gifted by the Late Malietoa when Princess Pilolevu gave birth to Hon. Salote Lupepau’u SALAMASINA Vahine Purea Ari’i ‘Oe Hau Tuita
This is great, I'm not Tonga, Samoan and the injustice that was done by the Europeans is really sad, I just hope one day that all of you take your land back, its yours. Europeans are a nation of people who take and never give back at all. They take what is not theirs and to get it back you have to pay. All of you can point to your home land with identity and know just who you are. God Bless you all.
Salamasina was the daughter of Tuia'ana Tamalelagi and Vaetoefaga. In the genealogy, Tuia'ana Tamalelagi was the first cousin of Levalasi later called So'oa'emalelagi when she was brought to Leulumoega to be the taupou of Tuia'ana Tamalelagi. So'oa'emalelagi adopted Salamasina. Levalasi or So'oa'emalelagi was given the four titles but instead asked to be given them to Salamasina. The connection between Salamasina and So'oa'emalelagi is not grandmother / granddaughter. It was aunty and niece.

Theres a possibility that Polynesian Islands used to be one big continent thousands of years ago. That could be the reason behind the similarities between polynesian culture
Samoa, Tonga, Cook Islanders, Tahitians, ..all Polynesians all originate from the same people. With the separate islands we are now living in, our languages and customs have changed and we are now developing our own unique cultues and customs that tend to define each of us specifically, although many similaries can still be identified among us Polynesian islanders. In fact for Tonga and Samoa, the fact that we had still maintained contact between islands up until late 1800s that our cultues and customs and even mannerisms are almost identical. My family on Manono and many other Manono island families all had connections to Tonga because of the alliances built between Manono island and Tonga for centuries including the 1800s. It's a pity that my own family had lost its contact to its families in Tonga. The name of my ancestral land on Manono is Pagai(after Pangai in Tonga), there were Tongan graves on our land in Manono, although most had been washed away as they were located on the seaside of our land.

( 7 ) Genealogies I counted in 1930 ranged from 18-22 generations, and I have taken the usually accepted Polynesian average of 25 years per generation. This agrees with Grimble, who, working independently on Gilbertese material only, obtained an average length of 27 years to a generation for males. Still, as some genealogies contain an occasional female (who typically married and bore children earlier than men), he regarded 25 years as an acceptable average-GP (1):16-18. Dates obtained from genealogy counts for periods more significant than 150 years are often highly speculative. In his earlier studies Grimble, without quoting actual genealogies, estimated 27-30 generations to the coming from Samoa, but in his last published work, he had reduced this to 22-25-GP (1), passim; Grimble 1922:102; 1933-34: Instalment No. 3, Appendix 2:103.

A lot of the high chiefs in Samoa can trace their ancestry back to Salamasina. Or more specifically her and her nine half siblings
