The ports of Collioure & Banyuls - Sur - Mer on the Vermillion Coast - France 🇫🇷

- We finally arrive at the Mediterranean coast and a hotel that gave a view over the town of Banjuls sur Mer. Out of season the town is very quiet and we were disappointed to find so many restaurants closed at night. The weather was a bit gloomy but a three night stay did give us time to relax and recharge after many days on the road. This area, which today is close to the border with Spain has in the past been independent of both. It has much in common with Catalonia which often looks to more independence from Spain. When the sun shines the sea takes on a blue, green hue that has led to the area being labelled the Vermillion Coast/Cote Vermeille. We take the opportunity to visit nearby Collioure but the heavy clouds and atmosphere was not helpful to photography of what is, on a blue sky day, a very photogenic location. The iconic church tower was covered in scaffolding which added to the sense of disappointment. This was as far south as we travelled on this trip. As we left ahead of us we had more of the heart of France ahead before we arrived at the Atlantic coast.

We stopped here for couple of quiet days before heading back north across western France. We are behind again with our viewing as we are wandering in the Czech Republic. Love the view by the sea and also the mountains whit all the villages and red Top roofs…You sure caught that helicopter 🚁 very well …I hope the one they rescued was ok after . The castle nearby the sea in Collioure seemed lovely . Those umbrellas at the end Hook up made me remember those that we saw in the old Quebec City 2 years ago except they were all different colors…nice to see ! 🤩Love the atmosphere in the little streets.

It was a relaxing stop on our trip. The French were raising awareness of breast cancer research throughout the month. They described this as Octobre Rose. Everywhere there were pink installations in streets and shops, while in the evening buildings were often illuminated with pink lighting. Yes, Ivor is filming and Robert takes the still images. So beautiful! We have never been here yet but we heard a lot of wonderful places on this area. It is always nice to discover and explore new places like this. Definitely an amazing adventure and a time well spent. I hope we can visit France too.

We had a three night pause here on our French trip to get our breath back. The pink umbrellas were part of "Rose Octobre" when many buildings were illuminated ant night in pink to highlight breast cancer awareness. Hope you have had a great weekend.

Hello, enjoyed seeing all of the boats. Nice scenery on the Vermillion Coast. Hope everything was OK with the medical emergency.
It was a nice relaxing stop. The helicopter was a surprise and the beach did make an excellent landing pad. It met an ambulance that would have taken at least an hour to reach a hospital in Perpignan. We have no idea of the nature of the medical emergency. Thanks for taking a look.

Banjuls sur Mer looks lovely. We've been to Collioure, and you're right, when it isn't so gloomy it is quite lovely too. It was our last stop in France before Barcelona on our very long road trip from Munich to Madrid about 15 years ago.
Really enjoying this France tour.
First time we went to Collioure we were camping alongside a shallow lagoon which was inhabited by thousands of frogs/toads. The sounds were amazing that night. Not much good for sleeping though. We had a really relaxed few days here. Your road trip must have been enjoyable. There are so many routings that you could choose. I have been so into road trips for some time. Glad you are enjoying this road trip through France.

Good morning, Ivor! I like your video about this area. Though the sun was not beaming all the time, the sceneries were stunning. The small streets in the village and the architecture of the buildings remind me of Barceloneta, the former fisher's quarter of Barcelona. All in all a relaxing and beautiful video!

These places were great Ivor, it sounds like North Wales with closed restaurants until Easter ! Banyuls was so lovely though and nice where you walked on that 'pier' and near the harbour, it looked beautiful with the mountains in the distance. The part near the water on the walkway where you walked also looked really nice. Hope the emergency helicopter sorted out the problem...
I really liked Collioure with its lovely architecture, colourful houses and narrow streets. I was wondering if it was a castle at 2.41-46 and 2.57-3.03 or was that the church you mentioned in the description box ? Great to see :) ~ Anna 👍
Hi Anna. The building you refer too was the Chateau Royale de Collioure. It was strengthened by the French military architect, Vauban, after it was seized by France in 1642 (officially annexed in 1659). Louis 14th had decided that France should be bigger and was extending its borders in all directions. The area still seems to have some things in common with the Spanish side of the border. This was a nice place to relax before turning back northwards and heading towards the Atlantic then the Channel. Hope you both have a great weekend.
