  • This very inexpensive portable battery-powered rechargeable breast pump has been AWESOME when it comes to milking goats with teeny tiny teats! I hope this video helps milking become less of a chore for you, and less of a literal (hand cramp) pain.
    The pump was purchased on Amazon. I searched for "rechargeable portable breast pump" and a bunch of options came up.

    Thank you! We had a lamb die yesterday and have an ewe with an engorged udder. Got a cup of milk (and twice that on us and the ground) this morning. She has not been handled at all. I’m going to find my breast pump and see if that’s a bit easier for her (and us).

    I have heard many many breeders say to stay away from cheap pumps on Amazon because the can damage the teats. They always recommend the simple pulse. My wife has her medela pump and we were thinking of trying it since her hands are sore from milking the Nigerians. Has anyone had issues with this pump damaging the teats?

    • @SageandStoneHomestead
      @SageandStoneHomestead  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I agree to stay away from cheap pumps that are marketed for animals. This pump is designed for human use and is incredibly safe and gentle because of that. The pulse action and variable suction control make it very safe and no teat issues. We have a capralite milker now (I liked it better than simple pulse when comparing pumps) because our capacity has outgrown the human pump but this was amazing while we used it.

    I saw you said you no longer use the machine, why did you stop using it? Did your goats have any complications from it? Did the pump you bought ever burn out?
    I currently hand milk (3 goats 2xs day). I don’t have any issues with my hands but don’t want to develop arthritis; I am hoping this may give my hands a break but don’t want to waste my time or money if it means it could cause complications for our goats or have to continually replace the pump.
    Thank you in advance!

      The battery operated pump eventually quit charging and I decided to hand milk after this, and then after about 18 months of that my elbow wasn't having it anymore and we decided to go all-in on a nice pump instead of buying the cheaper ones every so often. Some goats teats are too large for the human setup, but it never hurt anyone. I loved it for Nigerians. If you use a human pump try to get the best one you can afford so it lasts. I've had medela electric pumps last many years for human use.

    Thank you for sharing! Out of curiosity, do you kid share where the kid(s) are separated from Mama at night and on her all day? Or how do you do your schedule? Looking to add goats to our homestead and a relative that passed has Pygmy. I know they’re not a dairy variety but good for weed control and maybe a little milk (we don’t drink a ton of milk currently anyways- although if we have it fresh here we would probably consume more).

      You can definitely milk a pygmy!! When the kids are 2 weeks old we separate at night and milk in the mornings! We milk once a day.

    Do you need to paturize goats milk before drinking it ?

    • @SageandStoneHomestead
      @SageandStoneHomestead  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a personal choice for each family, but no we do not pasteurize our milk here. Clean milking practices keeps the milk clean.

  • @CelticRootsFarm
    @CelticRootsFarm 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    We are planning on buying goats for our homestead this season. I gotta say... I never thought to use one of those. Do you find that it takes you about the same amount of time to milk using the pump? Thanks for sharing. 👍

    • @SageandStoneHomestead
      @SageandStoneHomestead  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It can take less time, depending. One of my goats hates to be hand milked and will respond better with full let-down using a pump. The goat in the video has very small teats and so the pump is definitely more efficient with her. Right now I only have one goat who I hand milk and she has long teats that don't fit into the human pump well. She hand milks effortlessly so it is no big deal. Many of my goats are Nigerian Dwarf and they are hard to get underneath with hands AND a bucket sometimes.

    • @SageandStoneHomestead

      This was about 2 weeks after the babies were born. This mama was a first freshener and was nursing just one baby so it isn't a lot.

    What size of flange do you use?

    • @SageandStoneHomestead
      @SageandStoneHomestead  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can't recall offhand but it's the standard one the pumps come with. The most effective flange used would probably depend on the goat and her teats!

  • @crystalking9864
    @crystalking9864 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What size shield/flange did you use? I still have my breast pump but I guess I tossed all of my pump accessories so I’ll need to order some and don’t want to get something that won’t work.

    • @SageandStoneHomestead
      @SageandStoneHomestead  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it was the 22mm? I forget the sizes they come in. Whichever smaller one the pumps normally come with, or whatever size they come stock. We hand milk all the time now and I don't have my stuff anymore to double check.

      @@SageandStoneHomestead is there a reason you went back to hand milking?

    • @SageandStoneHomestead
      @SageandStoneHomestead  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We actually use a capralite machine now! I hand milk in winter though for a few reasons, we are milking far fewer in winter so the capacity is much lower, the milk lines don't handle cold well (become less flexible) and I don't like dragging the machine through the mud to get to the barn and back. But we love the capralite in spring and summer!

    Can we try this pump for cow and buffalo for milking purpose

  • @TheHeavenlyHomestead
    @TheHeavenlyHomestead 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I’ve noticed that you are hand milking now is it better to hand milk? I really want to hand milk but I’m new to it and it takes me forever ( I have a messed up pointer finger) so I’m hoping I can try this method … my girls are both new moms and they are patient with me for the first 10 min and then they statrt to move around and look back like “what is taking you so long?” Kinda way
    Hopefully you see this message

      I much prefer hand milking! Sometimes training a new milker (you or the goat) it is easier to start out with a breast pump and then hand milk at the end for you both to get a feel for it.
