I still think the Hero of that play was the referee who had the presence of mind to not only not signal touchdown, but to also not blow the play dead, and just stand there and wait for the play to unfold.
What this video doesn't show is Kaelin Clay thumping his chest in the end zone thinking he scored. The look on his face when he realizes what he's done is priceless. A different site shows the whole thing. Too much ego Mr. Clay, your major goof sucked the air out of the Ute's home field. Go Ducks!
Im confused. Isnt there a rule that you go out of bounds on your own you cant be the first player to touch the ball to resume play? If there is, shouldnt this be considered a saftey sense he did the penalty in his own endzone?
Yeah it's pretty baffling. You'd think after all the times this has happened, would realize "hmmm, is this really worth taking the chance of the embarrassment that will be shown on like national TV sports highlights and put onto TH-cam as to forever be that stupid guy that dropped the ball right before he got into the endzone?" Seems like the risk is much higher than the reward. Yeah like does anyone actually think that's cool? It blows my mind. If I was a coach I'd say you better run at least halfway into the endzone and not drop the ball. Period. Go hand it to the ref afterward
Yes, I'm glad someone mentioned that --- because this play and ruling has always bugged me --- even though I'm not really a fan of either team [unless they're playing against usc] Here's the problem with this play --- Oregon should not have been awarded the TD 😳 Watch @ 0:49 --- The defender who picks up the ball. He steps out of bounds not being forced out. By NCAA Rule, if a player who runs out of bounds without being forced out by another player, is the first player to touch a Loose Football, It is Illegal Touching. The Play is dead at the location where the ball was touched by the ineligible player. However, since the ball was Ineligibly stopped dead outside of the Field of Play [beyond the goal line/inside the end zone] , the ball is to be spotted where the last Legal possession took place. In this case, it should have been Utah's ball on the Oregon 2 yard line.
@@Jaems_Scott The rule states that the Offensive player (Utah) can not be out of bounds and be the first person to touch the ball. Although the Oregon player was out of bounds past the endzone, he is still considered to be on Defense. As such, he just has to re-establish himself back onto the field of play (two consecutive steps in bounds) before he can touch the ball. The replay shows that he took 5 steps back into the field of play before he touched the ball, with both feet inbounds at the time he touches the ball.
@@carlosresendez7798 = Actually, that is the rule for contact with the ball carrier, not recovering the football [at least in College]. As the rule states, if you go out of bounds, you cannot be the first to touch the ball, even after having reestablished being in bounds. Elsewise, the play stops, as the ball becomes dead.
If I were a coach, I"d have a standing rule. If anyone celebrates too early for any reason, they are off the team and lose their scholarship, or if NFL, fined a million dollars. This type of showboating must stop...NOW.

Facts!
This play never gets old. I could watch this on loop for an hour straight. Hahahaha!!!
Lol, the "big head of a fan gets in the way". You guys are soooo nice. >_>

He was also pointing to his name in the back
That’s the part I was waiting for lol I literally searched “football player celebrates too soon” 😂 It’s so embarrassing how cocky he was
I want to see the Utah coach's reaction :3
01:10 guy had a mini stroke while saying the word "need".

Starting at 0:54 when they're fighting for the ball on the one, Clay and two others are celebrating obliviously in the background...
“The large headed fan gets in the way” 😂😂
Is it suppose to be Super Cool to drop the ball the instant you're over the goal line, or something? This happens WAY too often...

How does it feel to be an ongoing joke, utes?
Fluke thing, that dude's a good player.
Ongoing joke is kind of an exaggeration...

Not so much the Utes....but, Clay was a running joke for (maybe) a couple of years...then he disappeared.
Walker had six aware blockers.. No one was going to tackle him. ha!
Great ref work
If the MLB mocked him by dropping it, I would have been ROFLing
Is the out of bounds rule valid in college?

51-27? Lol this game was 7-0 with 14:30 left in the second quarter. 71 pts in less than 3 Qtr is typical college footbal lol.
I don't see any ducks.
"Look at the size of that boy's heeead"
I'd argue that a play cannot go more than 110 yards. the yardage should only ever be measured at the line of scrimmage and not added up along the way.
Well yeah obviously, but the 178 yards is the better way to sum up the craziness of it all.
@@jhaz89 The line was as follows: 78 yard catch to the 1 yd line, Fumble, Fumble recovery 100 yards for touchdown.

So dramatic
This is why you’re not a coach.
