Hi Tucker I am the pilot in the water crash. Thanks for your comment on my video. Two days before I was reading all about water crashes and it recommended not to flair when landing in water to avoid getting snagged up in the lines if the wing falls on you. Landing at full speed was soft as you like I would like to do all my landings like this if it wasn’t a pain in the ass striping the motor down and cleaning it. P.S. The piston ring had melted so it lost all compression.

      @leifvejby8023 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Glad you are ok - and when Tucker talked about trying restarting the engine I was like ?!!?? because it sounded as if it seized. It could be caused by lean running, og by using fuel that had been stored for too long. My experience is that 2 months is max. for storing mixed fuel. (In the most cases the fuel will still be ok, but once in a while the gas will break down the oil. Happened to me with three months old fuel, fortunately only a chainsaw, but it will kill any 2stroke).
What did you put into the engine, new cylinder + piston + rings + bearing?

As a scuba diver, the second crash was interesting because it mirrors a common point of consideration/discussion in diving; task loading. There are a number of things you need to constantly be doing and checking underwater to keep yourself safe (like when flying a paramotor) and it's very important to ensure you are not overloading yourself with too many tasks for your comfort/skill level otherwise you'll end up missing things that will put you at risk.
As you gain experience, tasks become easier and require less mental energy and focus, so it's easier to juggle more tasks while remaining safe. When you're first starting though, leave all the complications (cameras, more complicated gear setups, slates, spearfishing, etc.) at home and stick to a simple set so that even if something "unexpected" happens, you have some spare mental bandwidth to handle the issue without putting yourself at risk.

Learn to swim well, Tucker! You're built the way I was at your age, and I was a competitive swimmer in high school (still strong for my old-fart age). With inflated lungs, most humans float. Even when exhausted, all we need to do to keep our faces out of the water is inhale deeply, exhale shallowly, and tread water slowly. You said in a more recent video that you're trying to increase your skill set. Here's a challenge for you! No one should ever drown in calm, reasonably warm water.

We’ve got (two) guys off my beach here in FL, that do “seemingly” crazy spins / spirals incredibly low to the ocean. Their turns break beyond what we’d call 90° of bank in an airplane. I keep telling my buddies we’re gonna’ see them die. Well yesterday, guy enters a spin that seemingly got away from him with multiple rotations, he throttled up full blast, just by the skin of his teeth recovering maybe 5-10ft off the water. These same guys also fly FEET above umbrellas and sunbathers on the sand. Seemingly insane behavior as compared to the rest of the paramotors that seemingly act like we would in an airplane. I can fly a Cessna, I don’t know much about these wings… but these guys seem like they need to be reported to the FAA and more aptly are gonna’ ruin the freedoms of beach flying for the good guys.
Am I off base here? Is it common to do spins with + 90° bank over the ocean at less that 100ft? Are these things easier to recover than I understand? What say you?

I'm but a new PPG pilot Adam and the laws here in Australia are different however, we are not allowed to fly lower than 300 feet unless landing and taking off and no lower than 1,000 feet over built up (suburban) areas. I'd say the pilots you have seen are contravening local regulations and yes risk the reputation of others who are doing the correct thing.

What seems more concerning is buzzing people no joke 10-15ft above heads. It seems like a small gust could put them into the children. Should I call the FAA?

I don’t agree with the advice at 3:00. If you are going into half brakes and are low to the ground you need to hold half brakes and finish the flare into the landing. Do not dump it and then flare or you’ll eat the dirt. I’m a skydiver and paramotor pilot as well and this has been taught through all the schools on canopy control I have taken.

    • @TuckerGott

I've been taught to not flare on water landings as to allow the wing to surge forward and let the open leading edge become sealed by the water so then it's full of air still and doesn't just turn into a wet blanket that consumes you.
flaring into water would risk having the wing fall ontop.
in any circumstance...water landing is all bad.

Another cool stunt video I saw was a guy on a Flattop created some rigging that let him cut his chute (wing) which auto-deploys the next wing. I think he was tryna emulate Fortnite, lol

When you got to be an avid flyer with your paramotor, do you ever think you would like to be a pilot and fly commercially or just personally for your own pleasure?

  • @MrJdsenior

And they probably didn't even give him the two points.
You just skipped over something. Per your video I just watched where you talked about safety, if you don't swim well, and you are going to fly over water, go get better at it. If you need a teacher I'm sure you can find one fairly easily, and public pools are available most anywhere. Also remember to have your flotation on, as you said, and if you do go down in the ocean, don't panic. I don't know how well it would work on the paramotor, but when you are going out into deeper water, like when you did the Island hopping, there are CO2 inflatable vests that will hold up up even if you are knocked out. Get a coast guard approved version, whatever you buy (paramotor specific rigs?). The big wave surfers use some that look like they are fairly innocuous when not inflated. And I wouldn't be surprised if you could buy ones that auto inflate upon water contact (a surface, not rain).
You are more buoyant in the ocean and it is fairly easy to float, especially with a bit or air in your lungs. I would also do underwater work in the pool, maybe simulating how long it would take to get rid of the rig if you had to, so you know if you are down for 30-40 seconds it is not the end of the world. Also, when you get good at it swimming is excellent full body exercise, with loading joints up, which you don't care about now, but will some day if you live long enough. Believe me.

yes, jumping out of the harness over water is a bad idea. There already were some skydivers (at least one military jumper) died that way.

There’s a school of thought saying you don’t want to flare going into water, because you want the wing to dive way ahead of you(like it does in the video). Flaring could cause the wing to come down right on top of you, increasing the opportunity to become entangled in the lines.
