      Nintendo’s “Game & Watch Gallery” games are some damned solid compilations, with extra special mention for #4 on the GBA. It’s got the most games included on a single cart of the whole series, including Game & Watch Zelda as an unlockable title.
      Love the new intro, by the way!

    Dave, you just come off as a really great, warm, genuine, and magnetic human being. I am truly thankful that you put yourself out there for us to enjoy, and look forward to that continuing for many years to come barring any unforeseen burnout you may eventually suffer from. Joe, I very much appreciate your unapologetic honesty, dry humor and wit, and your vast knowledge of the rich history, and graphical/auditory aspects of the gaming industry, as well as the nearly unmatched appreciation that you obviously have for the impact games have had on your life, especially the way your parlay that knowledge and passion into the production of your show. Thanks so much, and once again may you continue to make the content that you have continued to perfect in the original way you have, that has really made an effect in my enjoyment of games I would have never given a chance if not for the work you have put into this channel over the past 6-7 or so years. You guys make a nearly ultimate pair for TH-cam. One that I believe is highly underappreciated. Have a good one guys.

    The best thing about Paperboy is it's realism. Clearly whoever designed it had a paper route at one time because he got all the things a paperboy encounters while delivering papers correct.

    • @DeathBringer769

      Except the papers going through windows... That would only happen if you hid a rock inside the paper bundle or something, lol.

    • @DeathBringer769
      @DeathBringer769 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Comic Sans actually used to be considered "cool" and even usable for professional contexts in the 90s, believe it or not lol. It gained its goofy reputation from getting overused so much it turned into a joke/early meme ;D

    • @osurpless
      @osurpless 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Deathbrewer It’s like anything that is based on being part of a niche. What is easier? Innovating and coming up with compelling reasons that your product is awesome?
      Or simply trying to prevent others from enjoying it, as a quintessential act of laziness and bad faith?
      Don’t ponder too long about why most choose the latter...
      This also works for Comic Sans; it’s an easy joke to make as it counts on being “savvy” about what society has deemed is ok to make fun of; as it is based on volume versus merit, the added bonus is you don’t actually have to explain why someone should be shunned/make fun of for using it, especially if they didn’t know it was worthy of ridicule:
      “I’m going to need some context...
      Pantsuits suck.
      Which opens her up to ridicule for wearing them! Good one, Bernadette!” - The Agreement Dissection - The Big Bang Theory

    It’s important to note that the two Atari collections mentioned are compatible with the Nyco Trackball Controller. It works great with all the trackball games, and makes spinner games such as Super Breakout enjoyable.

    • @tetrisdave
      @tetrisdave 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah Breakout and Pong especially need the paddle. I might have to try and find one. Thanks!

    • @That_Handle

      2112dorf ,
      The overly priced Sony-branded as well as third-party PS1 mouse controllers work when there isn't a trackball. Mouse controller also serves best for the C&C Red Alert titles, Dune 2000 among others. Asteroids, Centipede and Missle Command discs for PS1 are also mouse controller-compatible. A spinner controller can be made for use on PS1 releases of arcade games to have the faithful arcade controls experience.

    Man I loved those [N][A][M][C][O] PSX discs.. The remixed music was so cool to hear back then. When i bouth my Yamaha CDR in 1995, I ripped the Redbook audio out of Volumes 1-3 and made a nice audio CD misc out of them.
    I made a mistake and sold them off . I'm trying to get them all again, but [C] & [O] are getting crazy expensive.

    With Dave talking about the Midway Game Compilations. One of MY Fave Compilations would be the Midway Level Pack from LEGO Dimensions. In Dimensions, you would find Arcade Docks throughout the game and each one has a certain Midway game on it. Playing each of those Docks once unlocks the game in the Midway Level World itself (Unfortunately. For some games like 720° and CyberBall, You need the Back to the Future and Simpsons Level Packs respectively) But otherwise it has Marble Madness in there for Dave (and the Actual Minifigure, Arcade Cabinet Model and Spy Hunter Car Model are pretty nice too)

      I've got it. It's definitely worth checking out because not only is the emulation WAAAAAY better this time, but also in my opinion Sonic 2 in Smash Pack 2 is the definitive version because of the non-stretchy 2 player mode that runs in native 640x480 :)

      I have to admit, I've been playing Sonic 2 since day 1. It was a "Sonic Tuesday", if memory serves me right in my old age! Starting a 2 player game to look at the screen for 2-3 seconds, and then promptly hitting the reset button has been my entire experience with 2 player Sonic 2.
      For me, Sonic as a single player experience is what I enjoy.

    I absolutely LOVE compilation discs. As an arcade gaming fan, these provided the ability to play some of my favorite coin-ops anytime I wanted, with no tokens required.
    One of the more overlooked features of the Namco Museum discs for the PlayStation is record-keeping. It’s pretty neat to look back at certain stats that the software tracks- from the number of times you ate all four ghosts in Pac-Man to your overall shooting accuracy in Galaga. Sadly, Volumes 2, 4, and 5 command decent money to own these days, and it’s cheaper to own later and more game-populated Namco Museum offerings.
    It’s too bad that Konami only half-assed its compilations. There were always key games missing (Hello, Sunset Riders!) in the PlayStation, Game Boy Advance, and DS offerings. And not getting a console Irem compilation disc still smarts.
    I hope you find more compilations to cover in a future episode!

    Reason for that long title is that there were four of these releases under the "Arcade's Greatest Hits" banner, two were Atari collections and the other were Midway/Williams. There was also a standalone "Arcade Party Pak" that's work a check as well, some of these discs also had interviews with the developers as well.

    Namco Museum is still the high mark that retro compilations should strive to be like; nice interface, cool extras like sound tests, artwork, and near arcade-perfect ports of a nice variety of well-known and lesser-known games. Compilations these days (or last gen, to be more honest) are just ports and hardly any special features; looking at you non-PS1 Namco Museum collections.
    Digital Eclipse of old were just ports with interview segments, but their ports were quality as well during that era; I think Digital Eclipse has gotten better compared to their last decade (Backbone-era) with Frank Cifaldi at the helm. The man is passionate about game preservation.
    Unfortunately, compilations aren't much of a thing anymore as we've mainly gotten just ports of individual games for $5-8 per game; Hamster and M2 are better than DotEMU as their ports are arcade-perfect, while DotEMU has emulation that's sub-MAME quality with more input lag and worse audio.

    "Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection" for PS3/Xbox is my favorite collection. It blows the Smash Packs out of the water. The title is pretty much an honest one. Only games I felt they missed were "Toe Jam and Earl" and "Eternal Champion".

    It's been mentioned by others, but I have to also throw my hat into the ring for Activision Anthology on PS2. They could have just slapped a bunch of Atari games on the disc but they went above and beyond, licensing popular music from the 80s that plays throughout (and is controllable via an in-game radio). They also included a virtual cork-board where you can pin up your Activision score patches. It's basically a simulation of being a hardcore Activision fan in the Atari 2600 era. Considering that it sells for about $10, anyone who doesn't already have a copy in their collection should seriously get on that.

    The Playstation 1 certainly had a lot of great classic arcade titles replicated in these comps.

    I really got into the Konami GB Collections back in the day - amazing GB Color remakes of classic Konami GB and arcade games.

    Fun fact: the emulator used in SSP was actually ripped by some guys and released solo on the net, so you could play (almost) any Genesis game with that lovely sound!

    I was just thinking earlier today, "When will Game Sack do a compilation episode again?"
    Nice timing!

    The Samurai Ghost-like arcade game is called Genpei Toumaden and it also received a PC-Engine port, but only in Japan. There's a GCCX episode about it.

    "The SEGA Smash Pack" was the disk that got me into playing compilations sets; for a long time, I mostly just played those & sports games, until (as Homer Simpson once said) my palette became more sophisticated (still loved all the emulated older games though!).

    Like the new intro! After watching your videos for two years now, I still giggle when you say "Game Sack" because I think, "They meant Balls!" I probably should grow up a little.

    aww man the smooth zooming camera of Virtua cop is a giant contrast to watching a modern game, where it looks like a chimp with behavioural problems controlling the camera in 360. its really hard watching a "video game" nowadays in 3d unless you are committed to them.

    You can't beat your significant other's score.
    Well... you probably could, but you shouldn't.
    Keeping your balls beats the sweet victory taunting.
    Admittedly, only just.

    OH. So that's what I was supposed to be doing while I was playing Warlords on the 2600 with my older brothers at age 5 or 6. I've been wondering what the hell that game was for years now.

    I've always been partial to the SNES version of Smash T.V. over the one (Arcade) on the compilation featured here. I honestly think the music for the SNES version is so good, there's no comparison!

    I remember having a friend a bit older than me who was addicted to playing Sega swirl with his roommate and her friend. They would get really competitive, yell when playing etc. I never gave it much of a chance because I was completely addicted to phantasy star online at the time and thought he was wasting precious pso time on Sega swirl. Lol. Ah, nostalgia.
