All of our dump trucks had Detroit's, 2 Euclid's from the late 50's with 4 cylinders, the Terex had a 6 in it, they never failed to start, and would pull any load.

My first Truck Driving job in 1980 had a 238 inline 6 Cyl 2 Stroke Detroit Diesel. These Engines were very popular in several V Blocks as well. I ran IDK how many other Engines of most makes ! These Engines had a Power Band at 1900 RPM to 2350 RPM they didn't pull well at low end but we're Interesting to run. Because of this you could RUN EM LIKE YOU WAS MAD 😡 AT EM...
these Engines were used in So Many Applications. The US Military used them in everything from Higgins Boats to Armoured personnel Carriers. 1988 the EPA implementation of Clean Air Act. stopped productions of these & changed Diesel Engines & Cars & Everything else for EVER.
Emissions from the 2 Strokes & all Diesels were high prior to this.
To hear these engines roaring beneath you as your running through the night well I enjoyed them. Nothing else sounds like them.
If you haven't spent 31 yrs over the Road Driving Diesels you Wouldn't Understand

Great engine, love the sound of a Detroit diesel, I had a bus powered by an 871 with a massive blower on top, the torque was incredible, sounded so similar to the 6 you have there. Crazy thing with these 2 strokes is they can run in reverse, I had no idea until I accidentally did it while changing gear on a hill at a very low speed, scared the hell out of me when I started going backwards in first gear, smoke billowing out of the air intake, air pressure alarm screaming away, fun times.

These where actually several kinds of coach that came factory with the v6 and v8 two stroke Detroit motors, and they are all older now. So its probably way cheaper to find one thats already being used in limited capacity (like a private motorhome ect) that needs some work than do an engine swap into a chassis not intended to house it, and since they are a pretty large vehicle to store, it would demand you do it well enough to actually use. Comparatively a pick up truck, or even better something like a dune buggy that doesn't even need roadworthy-ness to have enough space to play with the thing is a lot lower stress, you can be in/out with less money sunk into it, and you can store it under a tarp for ages between uses/project ideas without it needing half your yard.

The previous owners sent this one to scrap rather than keeping it or selling it likely because it isn't the most financially viable to run as is, but comparatively none of that matters for a toy project.
The issue with these Detroit diesels is the narrow efficiency band and high noise. If you want to make 65-75% of their max continuous output they will do almost as well as a newer common rail motor and will do pretty well for life/maintenance. However running them at 20% or less will just drink a massive amount of fuel making noise, and the minimum load you want to run to stop them choking up and keep the oil warm is reasonably high, with them preferring a pretty long warm up time before being given full load, rather than handling power cycling well. I don't think the Deboss shop needs anything like this much power, you'd want a decent factory or the like, and by that point your probably looking at a newer generator to be dependable, as the cost of a proper rebuild likely spans the gap unless your planning to set it up for some alternate fuel source that was locally available like waste oil. I personally have no knowledge of how to restore the electrical side also... that may be easy, it may be hard, it depends if its something they have expertise in.

    • @narcissistinjurygiver2932
      @narcissistinjurygiver2932 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

@@SheepInACart yes but it is super cheap and all it needs is the wires that were cut to be replaced. the engine does not need a rebuild. A new unit would not make up for its cost in fuel savings. this could be just a cool back up gen. also it will run just fine on old oil

Letourneas used to run V6 Detroit engines, the engine powered a D.C. generator for the wheel motors, and a alternator for steering, hoist, and tilt. It was a 60,000 lb fork that you controlled with toggle switches. Operators loved them, electricians not so much.
The engine run at full trottle at all times when the generator was primed. The trottle was controlled by two electrcal solenoids, for high and low speed. Cranked on low, pull d.c. main, hit prime button and go to high.
We used them in a pipe shop foundry, normal loads of palletized pipe were in the 40,000 to 50,000 range.

Detroit's are literally miniaturized EMDs. Same team behind the initial design phase (both are uniflow) as EMD and Detroit can both trace lineage back to Winton Engine and Cleveland Diesel that GM merged together in the 1930s. After the 201A, the boys at GM/EMC came up with the design for the 567 engine around 1936/37 and it started prime time in american dieselization starting in 1938. These engines helped with the war effort in WW2!
But yeah, just look at the design of detroit's versus EMDs, it's like looking in a mirror just tinier.

@@lorbofpower947.... Detroit Diesel is NOT "still manufacturing" these engines, New. The Only TWO that they are still manufacturing for the US (& several other countries) military, is the 6V53T & TA as well as the 8V92T & TA. The 8V71TA was also being manufactured along with the two aforementioned engines, but has now been dropped since nearly 3 years ago.
Having said that, Detroit Diesel's Reliabilt Division is very much "alive & well" and is committed long-term to continue RE-manufacturing the 2 cycle engines as well as rebuilds and complete line of parts and rebuild kits... especially now that there is a global resurgence of individuals and companies who are "resurrecting" and bringing back on-line the 2 cycle engines, there is now over 1.3 million 2 cycle Detroits "Known" to be in operation, currently.

These engines are still alive and well... but finding someone who actually knows how to work on them is another thing-- a few years one of the distributors approached me about teaching the young guys how to fix them lol... they are easy to start and fairly easy to fix... and they had a wonderful power to weight ratio. Therefore, they were used in tons of boats...

Unless the cooling air is supposed to be drawn from inside the genset and blown out through the radiator, it looks like the fan is on backwards. Perhaps it is designed like this to keep the electrical section cool.
I have an idea for this engine but it mightn't be cheap. A turbo 6V71 with 40-45 psi boost.
A bit of background for my idea - The 2002 Cummins inline 6 in my truck (not mine but company truck) is a 600hp, 2000ft/lbs ISX Signature Series. It has 42psi boost. It is seriously ballsy esp on hills at full load where it is awesome in the torque stakes. At high weight it manages to go up highway type hills at 40-48mph in 3rd direct (or the splitter in) in high range at about 1550-1750rpm, passing almost all other more modern trucks in the process.
I imagine The Mission (should you accept it lol) might go something like this:
Assuming this motor has 4 valve heads, then a bypass blower (just a used one but kitted out). An external intercooler rather than the Detroit aftercooler. Obviously a turbo that is capable of efficiently pumping this boost from a 7 litre[ish] Diesel. Since it is a 6V71 it should scale well to the V12 variant. It would be good to get it to aim for 1000ft/lbs torque. The hp is not the issue since the greater the torque the hp will quite normally be high since hp is a function of torque. By doing this you could establish a recipe for a high power turbo 12V71.
Now, I'm not suggesting 2000ft/lbs from this idea but bear with me.
I've always wondered what a 71 series would do with this sort of boost. You see, I saw a vid on a stock 12V71N and in a dyno test, including a pull down test, it struggled to make 1000ft/lbs. It made about 350hp from memory. Sure it was only naturally aspirated but turbo 12V71s only up the torque by about 300-400ft/lbs torque. The power 12V71N made was almost identical to Detroit's specs for this motor.
The same place also dynoed a 6V71N it produced 220hp and ~ 600ft/lbs torque (link below):
    th-cam.com/video/16kd3E2UkTY/w-d-xo.html
    The 12V71N:
    th-cam.com/video/9FF42Nwx3oQ/w-d-xo.html
When you're on that hill with 40-45 tons gross the capacity to hold a high gearand high roadspeed is a luxury. I'd love to see what a conventionally intercooled 6V71 with 40-45 psi of boost would make.

It lives to fight another day
    A couple of things
There's no need to hold the accelerator on full noise when starting
A GM 2 stroke when not running is on full power on the racks, yes racks because each injector has its own rack
Anyway once it starts it pulls nack to idle on the governor
This is the reason a GM can run away easy if they have sitting for some time as the diesel on the injector plungers goes all gummy and wont allow a rack of one of the injectors to return to idle
This is one of the down sides to a GM along with the noise and the constant oil dripping out the air box drains
    Great stuff again
    Keep up the good work
