I’m dealing with suicidal tendencies. Role playing if I did it …. Who is affected ? Who finds me ? How it spread? Does anyone even come to my funeral? Etc.

i really liked that part also, i myself have faced that this when I in isolation from an illness. it hard for us who have suffered from anxiety, depression and thoughts of taking an negative action 😢. been there done that, im in counseling now, have been for over a year..so much healing, Don’t be afraid of counseling, but you need the right counselor that takes a Good fast and prayer and asking Father lead you to the right one, he did me, and it made all the difference in my life!😊

As one who had lost all hope for a season due to mental illness, I can testify that the Lord will honor our efforts even if we are 'just going through the motion' for a time. It may take a while - even a very long while😅- but the Lord will come through like a sunset after a long winters night.❤

I know exactly what you are meaning! I went thru a dark time for well over 25 years due to mental illness and pride. I am so very grateful for the gift of the Stoning sacrifice Jesus Christ made for us! I am growing daily as I do His will!

When I hear Elder Scott quoted, I remember a Regional Primary Leadership meeting in the late 70s early 80s when he was presiding. After a few speakers, the chorister asked us all to stand for a rest song, “Popcorn Popping on the Apricot Tree.” Elder Scott didn’t miss a single action! Melted all our hearts

“Emotions and thoughts are not facts”. So true. I have had alot of anxiety and depression in my life. When I was depressed it was very hard for me to separate emotions and thoughts from facts. One day I felt impressed to write everything down in three columns. What I thought and felt, just the facts, and what I could do about it. This process brought almost immediate relief. Later when I was reading a self help book I found this same strategy in this book. I was amazed and even more amazing was that this was evidence that my Savior knew me, that he cared about me and would help me as promised. Depression can be very isolating but I knew I wasn’t alone. He gave me a way to find hope and the faith to act on it which increased my hope and faith in a cyclical way just like Dr. Bensen described.

Thank you for your close reading of "giveth unto men weakness"!
So often people fall into pluralising that into "weaknesses" but that is not what the Lord said. My mission president pointed this out years ago and I have never thought of it the same way again.
The Lord GAVE this unto us and when we come unto him he will show us that we are mortal and thus dependant on him.
So you can't perfect yourself and overcome all things on your own and do everything you want to do? Well, welcome to mortality! Yup, you are human along with the rest of us. We are all on this earth together and we are all weak and will always need the Saviour. And that is NOT a bad thing.
But when we scorn our weakness (mortality) we also scorn the help the Lord is trying to give us; we are soooo stuck and the Saviour must be so sad.
It is by admitting "I need thee every hour" that we understand one reason why he gave us mortality: so that we would be humble and rely on his Atoning sacrifice.

Shout out from your Follow Him fans in the Florida Jacksonville Mission. We love our missionaries and we will keep an eye out for Dr. Benson's daughters and take good care of them. We are in Jacksonville proper and many of our 24-member Zoom FHE group follow this podcast as part of our personal study each week. The missionaries will return with honor saying things like "y'all" and loving barbeque and banana pudding.
Thank you for trying each week to reach the one who is struggling with all manner of affliction or even suicidal. Christ would love the whole person, and minister, and so should we.

31:37 My dad who teaches for the church talks about this too, that in Ether 12:27 it is weakness singular, not plural, and that it refers to our mortality, or as Doug said, humanity. Earlier when Doug said “weakness” singular, I noticed it and wondered if he would talk about it 😅 sure enough! We are ALL fallen and we all have to come to Christ.

I can't help but think that not only can our weakness be made strong here and now, but also in our eternal progression. If our weakness is a lifelong circumstance because of our mortality, it can still be turned into our crowning glory when we are no longer in mortality.

Many of God's children deal with feelings of defectiveness. This was a great discussion of how this is part of the plan and something that He is willing and able to help us overcome.

I love "covenant confidence". Keeping our covenants is a great key to acting on our faith, which does increase our hope in Christ. We may be weak, but with His enabling power, we can become strong. Thanks for another great lesson.

Hank, you are awesome! I remember when you came up to Alaska to go fishing! Jimmie Rosenbruch is my grandfather that I am named after! I love that you used the tides as an example of why we need an anchor. I have been on the receiving end of a tide that knocked loose my anchor. We can truly end up miles from where we were. This shows me that my spiritual anchor needs to be strong. Because the tides of life can drag me miles away from where I want to be in life.

Hey Hank, I have a follow up to your Alaska story. My dad spent time in Alaska during the Korean conflict. He and his friend would go camping and exploring during their free time.
One night they camped on a beach. Like you, they didn’t know how much water would be coming in with the tide. They woke up in the night to the sound of the crashing waves shortly before the waves reached their tent. Their jeep was already almost up to the axles in the water.
My dad said they hustled to move it and essentially left most of their gear. They did make it out in time.

This podcast was so good. I never have nor ikely would have grasped the concepts in Ether 12 pertaining to weakness and opposition as it was discussed in episodes part 1&2. "A" is true and "B" is also true. The two parts don't cancel one another but deepen one another...such as the commandments given to Adam and Eve in the garden.
    Truly appreciate your insights here.

or... rather, I can recognize that I am not perfect and accept that, and I can have joy because the Savior has paid the price so I can learn from my mistakes. Facing the need to be perfect brings us to the Savior... because there is no other way. Isn't it great to be humble and seek to overcome, to be perfect... knowing Christ is there to help us.

I loved this information, especially about checking if emotions fit the facts & that thinking and feeling a certain way does not mean I have to act that way. Such timely advice for my family, especially my three boys. Does Dr. Benson have a book or articles written for youth? His perspective is so good.
